For those who still use the imperial weights, the joke still works, but a "Tonne" in the Metric system has the weight of 1,000 kilograms or 1 Megagrams. In other words the joke works in the USA but it is now not universally applicable.

A ton in the USA is a short imperial ton when imperial measurements were defined in British measurement system.

It was confusing as to what was meant by the use of the word "ton" and so the metric word used for a mass of 1,000 kilograms is the word "Tonne" to distinguish it from the USA measurement schemes.
