This is absolute NONSENSE.
The idea that freshly squeezed, non-alcoholic grape juice was served at the Wedding at Cana in John 2 is laughable.
For starters, wedding feasts lasted for DAYS – hence, the reason for the amount of wine. SIX jars at 20-30 GALLONS a piece is 120-180 GALLONS of wine (John 2:6).
Secondly – the process of making Grape juice so that it won’t ferment wasn’t even invented until 1920 – when it was developed by the Welch’s Grape Company.
Grape juice begins to ferment the second it is squeezed – especially at a DAYS LONG celebration in the desert.
Finally, verse 10 explicitly states:
John 2:10
“Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
The Greek word used here is μετηυσκο - which is defined as:
μετηυσκο
Pronunciation: meth-oos'-ko
Definition: 1) to INTOXICATE, make drunk 2) to get DRUNK, become INTOXICATED----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------a prolonged (transitive) form of 3184; to intoxicate:-be drunk(-en). see GREEK for 3184
Wedding hosts don’t switch to inferior “grape juice”. A completely sober person would be able to tell the difference right away and complain.
It doesn’t say that the people were “smashed drunk”, which is condemned in Scripture.
They were relaxed and happy in celebration – which is NOT condemned.
Psalm 104:5
You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man’s heart.
This is a praise of God – and He is NOT the Author of evil.

He is standing with the majority that have been victims of deceit. No matter what, religion can attract radicals….intelligent but crazy radicals. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas were bat nutz crazy! A long with the rest of the ECF’s that ran nothing less than a campaign against sex and women. Original Sin....contagious sin through sex.... absolutely absurd!
Why? That is the 64 dollar question.
To begin with it was partly due to the way the New Testament was written and the circumstances. Christ’s return was to be soon and the persecutions were predicted to start soon….as it was the persecutions lasted nearly 300 years. Generations living under that threat. So the New Testament was not pushing marriages and children….no time left and why would a man want to watch his wife and kids horribly tortured and feed to the lions.
The Bible does say… it is good for a man not to touch a woman…but that is a question to Paul, not a statement from Paul. But still you can see the attitude that existed from the start and then it got horribly worse from there.
In Judaism if God blessed you, you were happy, healthy, wealthy, with many wives and children and full of years.
Christianity developed a model of Christians as loveless, poor, sickly, and miserable….with a smile on your face. Suffering was a positive and pleasure of any kind was a negative. Celibacy was the recommended style of living. (By loveless I mean not having the love of a spouse.)
When the Catholic Church took over they expanded on all of this, not necessarily for hierarchy, but for the clergy and the congregations. But they did sell indulgences to the congregations! That was joke! And although the modern Catholic Churches in your neighborhood are great with good people, the clergy celibacy thing still haunts them and the Vatican is not worth 2 cents.
Now it is my observed opinion that part of the reasons for promoting sex and women as dirty, nasty, and sinful…is partly physiological. It comes down to a love / hate relationship with the “forbidden fruit thing” It is more exciting that way and men do not want to stop it and you cannot stop it because your religion would die out eventually.
The other reason is the male desire for a male dominance in everything. So making sex and women dirty, nasty, and sinful kept women down, as a second rate status in the Church and society.
But this kept magnifying and intensifying until women were linked to the devil and the Church writes a manual on how to torture them, the Malleus Maleficarum…the Hammer of Witches…and millions were tortured and murdered at the hands of the Church. Of course then you had the inquisitions in which the motivations in both varied.
The Protestants changed a lot of that….there were the Salem witch trials but that was just a small localized thing that most Protestants thought were wrong. Why did they strip women and not men to look for the devil’s mark?
The whole concept that sex and women were dirty, nasty, and sinful and of the devil….is one of the best examples of cultural / religious insanity! As I have said, we are working our way out of it, thank God!
But along with the campaign against women was the desire to create a Mosaic style law in Christianity by coming up with a list of man-made sins. It is another avenue for making laws. Of course this is a sin in itself, a corruption of the Christian message and religion. Like I say, it produces a moral minefield of real and fake sins and people can step on a real sin by trying to avoid fake sins.
And it is anti-productive….promoting the concept that rightness with the will of God is more based on what you do not do, rather than what you should be doing. It is a distraction from the truth.
People like the OSAS crowd use this list of fake sins to make it seem like it is impossible to resist sin, so there is no reason to even try. Just believe in Christ and sin all you want and make it to heaven….heaven full of evildoers! What is Hell for?
Go to scriptures for yourself and write down the sins that the scriptures list and do your best not to sin….good advice. Look at the list of real sins and look at your average Christian families….what sins are they going to commit? If you know the truth, it is possible to keep sin to a minimum. None of us are perfect but what Christ established was not for perfection.
When the Bible say, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son….that meant He loved sinners too and what was established was The Way, the way for sinners to be saved, the way that we could establish a relationship with God, in the family of God, and the gates of Heaven were opened to those that believed. My motto….Be good and do good the best you can. And what God said in the beginning about sin is true…. If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.” Genesis 4:7 We are not perfect and we will sin on occasion, but Christ expects us to learn from our mistakes.
That is why I say pray to God, talk with Christ, walk with Christ. When you sin talk it over with Christ, tell Him why you sinned and why you know it was wrong and tell Him what you are going to do to prevent that from happening again, and ask Him for forgiveness. Forgiveness is yours. He went through the passion and died on the cross for you. The least you can do is love Him and do your very best.

Again, I never heard of this before. Is it really a major concern these days among Christian churches?
I have my doubts that this is so.

Granted, Paul did compare salvation to a race, and a fight. But Paul simply could be speaking of things the world does to help us to relate what we need to do as followers of Jesus Christ.
Not counting minor holidays like Groundhog day or Donut day (Which really is not taken seriously by many), I believe four of our major holidays should not be celebrated.

Are all holidays and earthly celebrations bad?
I do not believe Thanksgiving is currently bad based on what we know about it in history.
Is Thanksgiving Day a Christian Holiday?
(Note: I do not agree with many things Carm teaches because they are Calvinists; But I do agree with them in regards to this article).
Easter is like Christmas in the sense that it has two ways you can celebrate it. But the problem again is the pagan secular side of this holiday. It’s like a restaurant buffet holiday. Pick and choose which of the two ways you want to celebrate on this day. But nothing is ever mentioned about choosing a specific yearly day to honor the resurrection of Christ. We are to walk in newness of life (living righteously) which is in the likeness of his resurrection (See: Romans 6). This is the true way to honor Christ’s resurrection (Which is by living holy unto the Lord) and not honoring a national holiday.
As for birthdays: There really is not enough data either way to suggest this is bad or good to do this. We know that when the prodigal son came home, the father had a celebration for his son in that he was lost and now he is alive again. So that he lives again (a birth of sorts) was a cause of celebration. So while Scripture does at other points tell us that one’s death is better than one’s birth, etcetera, we have to take a balanced approach here. So it’s not clear it is sinful, but it is permissible. Of course we should honor the LORD first and foremost on this person’s day that they were born (of course). Even the wise men made it a big deal when they learned that a a special King was born. They could have waited until he was older, but they didn’t. They clearly honored him in coming into the world. God creates life and it is a gift from the Lord to be blessed with children.
Valentine’s Day is simply a day to honor your spouse, fiance, and or somebody you are dating (to determine you want to marry). It is simply a day of love and we see love for the opposite sex strongly displayed in the Song of Solomon. So I don’t see a problem with this holiday. The focus is love and it includes either the giving of flowers and or chocolates and a card (with one’s heart expressed into words of how you love them). But loving in this way should not of course be just forced to one day out of the year. We should always show our affection in other ways.
St. Patrick’s Day: Reading up on this holiday (even at Wikipedia) says this is the day to commemorate St. Patrick and the arrival of Catholic/Orthodox churches into Ireland. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. The Catholic and Orthodox churches are clearly not biblical. They uplift the saints and pray to them wrongfully. So this is a Catholic/Orthodox holiday and not a Christian one. This day is focused on either attending St. Patrick’s day parades, wearing green, drinking green beer, and green milkshakes. A true Christian who desires to pick up their cross daily and deny themselves will just see this holiday as silly and dumb.
The fourth of July: The declaration of our Independence. This is a national celebration involving our country. While is a huge blessing to enjoy in the freedoms of being an American, nationalism (putting your hope in the government) will not save a person and it has it’s own ideologies and belief separate from the Bible. A person should thank God that they are blessed to have the freedoms they do in this country on this day. But should they go out among others and shoot fireworks and or focus on how they need to see them at a special place? Again, we are bought and paid for with a price and we are not our own. This life is about living for the LORD and not ourselves. While it may not exactly be a sin to see some fireworks, it can be if a person puts their trust in the government and it’s ideologies and they take pride that America is the best as they shoot off and watch fireworks, etc., etc. when in reality they should be focused on the Kingdom of God as the true Kingdom. Hebrews 13:14 says, “For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.”
New Years Eve celebration.
Generally to celebrate this holiday fully, one would go out into a crowd of people who are drinking and or having a huge celebration that involves secular worldly music, etcetera. This is displayed on TV for all to see. They look to see the ball go down (or something similar) and the counting of the next year. While it is not wrong to wish somebody a happy new year, we have to be careful of the worldly side of this holiday and the dangers involved.

The KJV is very clear about the earth . IF we read ISSAIH which was written long before columbus sailedNo it isn't because you don't believe in any perfect Bible to believe in.
I don't believe the world is flat, either.
Not sure how your stating this actually helps you.
While it is true that God inspired the Scriptures, you are incorrect that it was men alone who compiled God's Holy Word.
God was the One who was preserving His Word. Without divine preservation, then.... divine inspiration is a waste of time.
Funny. That's exactly what I think you are doing. We both cannot be right.
But I believe the Bible and bible history supports what I believe and I am confident in that (even if I were to be skeptical of my own viewpoint trying to tear apart what I know; I would still be convinced of what I know is the truth because it is that solid and good).
Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. He is the One who can set us free and by His Word.
Sure it has. God has changed my life for the better.

to try and make it seem like the kjv was saying the earth was flat . NEVER said that . IT DOES SAY CIRCLE .

Playing sports or liking sports does not make anybody "worldly" Sports were very popular during the biblical era and Christ nor the Apostles spoke against it.... This is how false beliefs get promulgated, men have an opinions and try to impose it on and above the Word of God.
Holidays? It is a broad topic. The scriptures do not way in on this much. When God had Paul open up Christianity to Pagans I am sure He knew what would happen. The Bible calls them Gentiles...Gentiles from different regions then and more now. When they converted to Christianity there is nothing that told them to abandon all their customs and cultures, they brought that into Christianity and in some ways adjusted them to be Christian.
Emperor Constantine was task with dealing with the Pagans and the Christians in his empire....holidays shuts down a lot of things so he consolidated them. No reason to worry about that anymore, we could move the holidays if we wanted to. But is like Aesop's fable The Man, the boy, and the donkey....you are not going to please everyone. Of course we could rename Easter, but we do not want to move it.
Celebrations are not a sin unless you are sinning when you celebrate.
I think they called it "keeping their day", and it was looked down on as vanity.

As far as the believing the earth was flat.....round can be flat, the earth is shaped as a globe.
Why did the Jews and Christians believe that the world was flat and the sun and moon and stars moved around it? Why did they believe the world was on a fixed foundation? And why did sailors worry about sailing off the end of the world?
It wasn’t just the Jews and Christians; it was a common belief of the time period. And you will see a lot of references to “ the ends of the world and ends of the earth” Means no thing to us we know the planet is round but, back then it was a fear…..of falling off the ends of the world….particularly for sailors.
According to these scriptures the earth has a foundation….and it was set on pillars that could be shaken but the earth could not move and the sun and moon moved around it….and if an object was tall enough it could be seen from the four corners of the earth because the earth was flat….and yes flat but no round, it had corners….and the sun and moon can stop traveling around the flat earth….and heaven has windows.

Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved….. (They believed that the Earth did not rotate or move….. everything… sun, moon, and stars, orbits the earth.)

It would be that the earth stopped rotating not the sun and moon stopping.

I know it would be the earth that stopped . Yet it would appear to them as though the SUN and moon did .
Saying the sun and moon stood still is not a contradiction . We still use the words sun set and sunrise .
ITS Just a way to express it is all . I thought you would have known that .
The point is the Jews and Christians and Pagans of the time period thought the world was flat. Ever heard of Galileo's struggle with the church over the world being flat. They were so offended that they imprisoned him for a while, thinking that the Bible backed them up.

Folks can simply and do simply misinterpret some things . But the more we read that bible the clearer things become .
It is not a matter of twisting....it is not their fault....there are large number of scriptures that describe it as flat on a foundation and it did not move.
It was the belief of the time period....there is no one talking about a global shaped earth that orbited around the sun.

No scripture says its flat . It says from the four ends of the earth . but that simply means east , west , south , north .
Sure i understand that folks can misundestand it . ITS Why i say THE MORE we read
the BIBLE having hearts AFTER GOD , the clearer it all shall become . OPEN BIBLE , READ BIBLE and LOVE THE TRUTH OF THE GLORIOUS
LORD . TRUTH is , if we had the LOVE OF GOD shed on our hearts we would have LOVED the TRUTH .

According to these scriptures the earth has a foundation….and it was set on pillars that could be shaken but the earth could not move and the sun and moon moved around it….and if an object was tall enough it could be seen from the four corners of the earth because the earth was flat….and yes flat but no round, it had corners….and the sun and moon can stop traveling around the flat earth….and heaven has windows.

God created the earth it sure does have a foundation . What pillars do we think that means .
This is no way means they are these big pillars holding the earth up , Rather its simple langauge to say
PS why would it mention the earth as a globe . I think the word globe came along later .
Ye have to deal with the language at hand my friend . None of these points proves what you are trying to make it say .
I mean it says they will be pillars in the KINGDOM of GOD and it calls us stones . NOW that aint literal is it . NOPE .
The truth is , the more we read those bibles things will become more clear . PS dont expect to know it all ,
but take rest in the truth that GOD will give us what we need to know when we need to know to build our faith and trust in Him .
Just read the scriptures and like I said the Jews, Christians and Pagans believed the earth was flat.
If Christ would have told them the world was round they probably would have thought He was crazy. Just like Galileo.
No one saying the world is flat....but the way the scriptures word it and describe it you cannot blame people for believing it was flat.
