In regards to the OP:
I had an inkling (even before I saw this) that the "statue" in Daniel, actually relates to the stages of spiritual interpretation of the words of the Gospel - exactly as you lay out in the OP: the gold head represents us gaining faith, silver chest and arms represent us gaining a sense of morality, bronze belly and thighs represents us learning to relate to spiritual powers, iron legs represents us serving the nations and a clay and iron mix for its feet represents our desire to do good, whether possible now or later.
The stone which crushes this statue, is Heaven, that is, the Gospel manifest in Heaven, despite all our stages on Earth.
