There is a need for leaning on His wisdom as even Peter admits Paul's writings are hard to understand, but he points out how those who will wrest Paul's words as well as the rest of scripture, because they are falling by the error of the wicked from their own steadfastness.
2 Peter 3:15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; 16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. 17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
So pray normally to Jesus in asking Him for help in understanding Paul's words. We start in 1 Corinthians 12th chapter for understanding the premise from which Paul is writing from in the 14th chapter. That means, he will not be writing the opposite in the 14th chapter.
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
This is how believers are falling by the error of the wicked when they think they can get God's gift of tongues by seeking a baptism with the Holy Ghost apart from salvation. That verse above sets the premise for God's gifts in that entire chapter that none of the gifts are gained by having another drink of the One Spirit so why single out tongues as if it does? You do not see any other calling to receive the Holy Spirit by any other gift, do you? You should discern that.
1 Corinthians 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
That is Paul setting another premise about God's gifts in that they are to profit the body of the believers and not individual believers; that means tongues cannot be for private use. Period.
He explains how the Holy Spirit will operate those gifts from within the believers in that assembly.
1 Corinthians 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
At no time in that chapter did Paul say one gift can be used for the individual benefit. Tongues will be followed by the interpretation of that tongue from another believer in the assembly.
Paul did go further by explaining that believer can NOT use a gift for private benefit because that would be like saying they have no need of someone else in the body.
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For the body is not one member, but many.....18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. 19 And if they were all one member, where were the body? 20 But now are they many members, yet but one body. 21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.
So for all those who cannot seem to be reading 1 Corinthians 14th chapter rightly as if Paul is teaching tongues are for private use, what has Paul just written in 1 Corinthians 12th chapter? God's gift of tongues are NOT for private use.
So what is Paul really saying in the 14th chapter, especially in verse 2 ? Read it in context;
1 Corinthians 14:1Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
See how the topic is for believers to desire spiritual gifts, BUT Paul is exhorting them to prophesy? The following verses is Paul hard to read attempts in explaining why to seek the gift of prophesy over all spiritual gifts by comparing prophesy against tongues.
2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
So Paul is trying to compare tongues by itself against prophesy for why prophesy is better gift to seek after because prophesy edifies the church whereas tongues have to be interpreted.
Believers are wresting his words in verse 2 & 4 as if he is opposing himself in showing how tongues are so cool all by itself. Paul is not doing that when he is trying to get believers to seek the gift of prophesy over all spiritual gifts, especially tongues. It is a poor comparison, but in context of the message and with the understanding that the reader has read 12th chapter, Paul is trying to convey a fact that tongues is not a stand alone gift.
That same tongue, Paul continues to testify through out chapter 14 that it has to come with interpretation, because Paul says it is unfruitful to himself as a tongue speaker unless someone else interprets it for Paul. That is why Paul says tongue speakers should pray that another interpret the tongue being manifested in them so they can understand it and that tongue be fruitful to them as a tongue speaker.
If tongue speakers can claim they can interpret their own tongues privately, then again, they are opposing Paul's words that no one can say they have no need of any other member of the body of Christ. They are also ignoring the operation of the Holy Spirit in dividing the gifts severally as He wills in the body.
Since tongues with interpretation is for edification, then there is no way tongues can be used for private use when all the Lord has to do is speak to that believer through His words that can be understood by the believer as in prophesying to that believer.
What? Have we forgotten how the Lord spoke directly to people in the O.T.? Jesus spoke directly to the people in the N.T. So why would any one believe God would go around in circles, using tongues to speak to that individual believer when He can do it directly?
To be continued... yeah.. I know.... may God lead you to keep reading for your edification and discernment about God's gift of tongues from what is NOT God's gift of tongues....
