"Work out your salvation, in awe and wonder".. (fear and trembling) = Awe and Wonder.
This is one of those verses that the devil teaches as Legalism through self righteous people, pastors, teachers, to try to convince you that you need to be striving to keep yourself out of hell, if you are born again.
The devil teaches it like this.....
1.) "work out your salvation and you dont go to hell"
2.) "If you work and keep the commandments, then you are working out your salvation, and you won't go to hell".
3. "working your way into heaven, by enduring to the end, is how you work out your salvation, so that you dont end up in the lake of fire"
4.) "work out your salvation, because its all on YOU".
So, do you see what is wrong with all this heresy?
Its the fact that your self effort is now the savior, and Jesus ALONE is no longer being trusted to get you into heaven..
So, don't be that ""fallen from Grace" Christian.
Now, here is how to understand this verse...
Working out what is IN YOU, is to work out your salvation.
You work out, what is already completed, IN YOU.. "In Christ".
Salvation is...."NOT OF YOURSELF".. as if it was up to you to keep yourself saved, then it would not be God's Grace, would it?
See that Grace?
That is God saving you, and keeping you saved. = That is SALVATION.
That is God imputing, (gifting) you with His own Righteousness, and that is how you BEGIN, as "born again". .. having received .. "the Gift of Righteousness".
You begin completed, = as Righteous as God, born again into the Spirit of God....but you have to learn how to live out this "new Creation in Christ" on earth.... and that is "working out your salvation".
You are not working to be saved, you are working because you already are saved.
The proof is that you are born again.
So, what is the goal?
The goal of working out your Salvation, that is IN YOU< is not to achieve Heaven in the end.
As this is already yours. = Eternal Life, that is IN YOU has guaranteed you are already in heaven, "seated in heavenly places in Christ" already.
See....You don't have to work for what is already attained by Christ, FOR YOU.
The goal of working out your salvation that you have....is by learning how to EXIST in it...perfectly by revelation knowledge that is the "knowledge of God."
This takes us to the full maturity in our understanding = "the fullness of the Stature of Christ"....= on Earth.
Or as Paul teaches..>"let as many of us as are PERFECTED"...."as be PEFECT".
Now, see that word "perfected"?
You are already as righteous as God by being born again, having received ... "The Gift of Righteousness".. and that lasts from the time you are born again, until the end of Eternity..., and eternity is FOREVER.
And you become perfected on earth, in your walk, in your DISCIPLESHIP = regarding your understanding of who you have become "IN CHRIST"......then you have "worked out your salvation"...
