most folk are astonished and surprised when told and really realise for the first time and it seems to come as a bolt out of the blue that "we do not breathe" and that a clever/intelligent Designer has fixed it that we do - if left to us and human nature we would not want to do it all the time or at all but only when we felt like it or not at all when asleep - so left to us we would be quickly dead and extinct,so truly "in Him we move and live and have our being" - twinc

exactly as stated,just like you most folk are confused - the only time anyone really breathes is if and when they attend Yoga [breathing] classes and even here they get caught up in the actual breathing exercises and miss what it is really about is to make us aware that "we do not breathe" - in medical jargon this is termed involuntary - twinc

Respiration is part of the autonomic nervous system, so, even though we don't have to actively command our chest to move the muscles to inhale and exhale, or consciously keep track of the oxygen levels in our blood stream, we still breathe as part of our being.

As far as blaming God on our need to respire, nearly everything He created that has life utilizes some sort of respiration for it's basic existence. So we are no different or special because of our dependency on the intake of oxygen, nitrogen, and argon and the exhalation of carbon dioxide and water. In fact, the symbiosis between the animal and vegetable world is remarkable. We exhale the gases plants need and they respire the gases we need to survive.
