We are told by Jesus that unless we eat his flesh and drink his blood we can not enter the kingdom of heaven.
There is nothing in the Bible that is not written for a reason and God is Awesome and His Word is so amazing you could never find all of the wonderful things He has put in there. It is like a treasure hunt and His wisdom is better than gold or rubies. For when you make God your Father, you have it all and you have found the giant pearl of wisdom.
When Jesus was born there was no place in the Inn for them to stay. The reason is because Jesus was born on the Feast of Tabernacles being our Emmanuel, God with us. But Jesus is more that just a child of God, he is the actual Word of God, our E-Manuel sent from the Father in heaven to tell us of Himself and how to live. And whom the Father created all things with, by and through. Nothing exists without the Hand of God and Jesus sits ON(literally) the right hand of God and the Father does everything according to His Word.

The reason that Jesus was literally placed in the animal trough is for a spiritual understanding. He is the Bread of life that fallen man in their animal lusts walking in their dog eat dog mindset of self survival must feed upon to be born again and saved from the destruction to come. We must no longer walk as dogs on all fours with motives, words and actions are clearly in the image of The Beast.
He also told us we must drink in his blood(Spirit) and eat his flesh which is the Bread of Life for he is the Word of life so that we no longer walk in the image of the Beast.... but Upright on two legs as men in the image of God meaning His attributes as we did before the fall.
We have come full circle and God has told us the end from the beginning. 6 days we work and the 7th day we rest. For 6,000 yrs(6 days on the LORD'S timing) we have worked the fields to plant the seeds, but no seeds will be planted in the last day (1,000 yrs) for God says to rest the soil so that it can restore it's nutrients. In the new heaven and earth the planting begins again for as long as the earth remaineth:

22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
