If anyone in a civilized country commits a crime that is sufficient to get themselves incarcerated and there are no other relatives to care for them, the same will happen to their children.

The president's proposal to reunite parents and children if the parents give written agreement to leave is a good one.
Their chances of actually getting asylum are low, so this would speed along the process.

But Brother, seeking asylum is not a crime. People arriving to seek asylum are to approach an Official Border Crossing and declare themselves. In this case there are no charges. If seekers arrive not at a border crossing point that is a misdemeanour and not a crime. In all other cases a misdemeanour does not call for jail time.
