So, if someone needed a word of wisdom but it was not in a church setting....you don't believe that God could move through you with a word of wisdom for a body member ( or any other gift)

Hmm Why would God withhold what He had the ability to give through you, if you were willing. The same Holy Spirit dwells within us all. HE is the one who does the works, not us.

I was thinking she meant moving in all of the gifts at once. I think we would be like God in that way. And pride would make our head explode. But yes, I believe God can grant a needed gift to a willing vessel.

So the pastor at one church said

Word of Wisdom: knowing/sharing future events
Word of Knowledge: Knowing something about a person you wouldn't normally know.
Prophecy: words of exhortation that build up the body of Christ.

I never heard of it that way before. I always thought prophecy was telling future events and word of wisdom was like King Solomon.

For me, WoW was having supernatural advice (that I did not know before or develop on my own) for someone.

Ive only been introduced to words of knowledge and wisdom in the past few years. I was pretty surprised. Not something you learn about in a Baptist church. :D

Now I do receive dreams I believe, but I do not know what that falls under. People have said prophecy, but like Pharaoh and the baker, I don't think they were gifted in prophecy. Joseph was by interpreting.

Dreams & visions are two forms of prophecy.

In the cases of worldly leaders, like Pharaoh & Nebuchadnezzar, God gave them prophetic dreams so they would have to call on a man of God for an interpretation. It served to introduce YHVH into their empires, as well. We don't know how Joseph's Pharaoh ended, but Nebuchadnezzar eventually humbled himself before God.

The Bible says about rulers,

"Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities.
For there is no authority except from God,
and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.

Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God,
and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves." Romans 13:1-2 NKJV

and,

"The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord,
Like the rivers of water;
He turns it wherever He wishes." Proverbs 21:1 NKJV

In both the above examples, Pharaoh & Nebuchadnezzar had said dreams repeatedly.

Does anyone believe that all gifts can operate through you at any given time as well as have a specific gift as their main gift?

I've seen more than one gift operate at the same time, like a message in tongues, and the interpretation following by the same person. Those two gifts are the only ones I haven't used at one time or another. My main gift is being able to hear God's voice. Though I have won a couple women to Christ, my main ministry is to the Church. There are so many false doctrines out there it is over-whelming. You need a thick skin because of the opposition.

Dreams and visions falls under the gifts of Joel 2, spoken of by Peter on the Day of Pentecost.

1 Corinthians 12
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.

11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

A good question.
Encouragement. I spend time sharing and encouraging others in the Lord, bringing light and love to God's word.

I have seen people open up and grow in their lives, in trust and openness, in knowing they are loved and can become real and be vulnerable.

Over years things change, words become more insightful. Exercising in one's Spirit when to do things is harder to pin down, to pause, to speak love to another. But things change and glory comes to the Lord.

In God some are the hero rather than the faithful servant. Heroes rarely succeed, but fruit comes from faithful servants. God bless

Let me see...gifts...

Kindness and compassion are two of my top ones...

I believe I have a gift with teaching, children at least, as well as serving. Helps is a big one. Leadership is growing, but Id much rather help the leader rather then being the leader.

And I guess music falls under exhortation.
This is called the gift of mercy. It's such an essential gift in the body of Christ. We all need to know God's mercy and compassion at times. God will use this gift to convey these.

As a young Christian in a Southern Baptist church, I and others who knew me saw that I have the gift of prophecy. Southern Baptists tend to be cessationists and don't believe that this gift is still in operation, so it's funny that we saw this.

I used to be painfully shy and didn't want to make waves (lol), so it's interesting that God gave me this gift. I certainly didn't seek it, but I have seen Him use it in powerful ways! Usually, God gives me a word to speak, and I KNOW it's the Holy Spirit moving on me and showing me what He wants me to say. Most of the words He has given me to speak have been to individuals, but a few times, He's given me a word in a church service or prayer group.

It's amazing when the person confirms that what I'm saying is ministering to them! Most of the time, He gives me words of encouragement, but occasionally He has given me a word of warning for someone. One time during a ministry time in church, God gave me a lengthy word for an individual. While I was speaking it, the woman had a strange look on her face and asked me if she knew me. (We had never met.) Then she told me that the word was on target.

I've come to see the gift of prophecy as being like the canary in the coal mine because a person with this gift can be very sensitive to the presence of sin and can feel burdened about it. I know I have. Of course, God doesn't show us this so that we can judge others, but so that we will pray for them and encourage them.

God has also used me to heal, but this is not a gift I have operated in on a regular basis. Years ago I had suspected that my daughter had low thyroid. We were sitting and talking when the Holy Spirit put a picture of her thyroid gland in my mind, and I knew that I was to lay hands on her and pray for her healing. Within minutes, she told me that her hands and feet were warming up. They had always been cold, even in the summer. She also found that she had a lot more energy.... Recent blood tests showed that her thyroid was functioning normally.

There have been some people who desire the HS so badly that they will do anything to move in the spirit, but not necessarily the HS.

I am speaking of the result of people visiting a church where the HS was moving, was that after they had left, the HS was no longer moving in that church as if the visiting people had stolen the HS from that Church.

Why did it happen? That I cannot explain. All that I know is that the HS was no longer moving in that church as if the visitor had stolen the HS from them.
Like the guy who wanted to pay for what the disciples had...

I do think word of wisdom is akin to what Solomon operated in; divinely revealed wisdom that sorts out complicated situations. I think it also manifests in debate. Jesus often came up with answers that so dumbfounded the Pharisees that they had no answers for it.

Great post. It appears Joseph's Pharaoh responded favorably as well. Joseph interprets his dream in Genesis 41, and by Genesis 47 Pharaoh blesses both Joseph and his entire family, and establishes them to prosper in the land of Goshen (Genesis 47:5-6). It was the Pharaoh by Moses' time who had turned against the Israelites because they became so numerous.

I differentiate the gifts of God in 2 ways. Those that come to us as revelation, dreams, visions...basically visitation. Or even a gift given to us from God from a brother or sister. And then there are the gifts that come out of us from deep within. These are according to the Spirit's working in POWER. The gift of miracles is a good example of this.

The first kind help us to become spiritual. They are stepping stone gifts because we are receiving them to be edified inwardly towards a more spiritual kind of growth. They are to increase our faith. Mainly these are NOT meant to be shared unless for personal testimony. It may be a little known fact that by over speaking of what God is giving us, we limit further giftings from God. If we can keep a secret...God will reveal more of His secrets to us. (and this is a well kept secret in itself! :) ) If we submit all our faculties to Him then the Spirit will guide us when and what to share and what to do. Otherwise we may just be going off half-cocked and allowing the outer man to steal away the blessing from the inward man. (a classic case of having an uncrucified life)

Then there are the gifts that come from us (through the inwardly abiding Christ) when we are truth BEING spiritual. In that case we are learning also from the gift that God is moving through us to others in that moment. But the source is now fully from within as opposed to coming to us from without.

So then a revelation gift in the general sense is a gift TO you...a prophetic insight, a vision, a revelation.

But there are gifts that come out of you to benefit others (not you) as God speaks from within to others...using you as His mouthpiece. So that could include a word of knowledge or wisdom. Or a rebuke...a judgment...a warning, an exhortation. But all this for the sake of truth and growth in the Spirit. All for edification of the inner man...not the outer man. (hence the difficulty for carnal men to hear it)

Now these inner promptings can easily be confused with a using of our own minds and ideas....but a spiritual person is dead to their own ideas and opinions. If we maintain such things then we are in the way of God using us in this way. In that case we are still operating in the outer man and playing in spiritual puddles. Such a person can still receive a gift...but cannot be used to properly administer a gift to the Body..or to others in general. So we are learning to be like a river that brings spiritual blessings into the world for the sake of edifying the brethren in love. (without getting the carnal man involved in any way)

This is an interesting debate, and one H2S and I have discussed on a few occasions. I tend to take the approach that the Lord favors individuals having specific parts to play, and rarely moves to undermine that principle by making us jacks-of-all-trades in the spiritual gifts.

We also have this in 1st Corinthians: "Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, strive to excel in gifts that build up the church. Therefore, the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret." (1 Corinthians 14:12-13).

The implication is that not all who were speaking in tongues could interpret, and that they had to pray for that additional gift if they would receive it. Similar things are implied concerning prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:1). So my position is that He desires us to be complimentary specialists if you will (though many can wind up with more than one gift). The problem with the Corinthians was that they had everyone speaking in tongues but few interpreting or prophesying, so they were undermining that complimentary system, and the way God designed it to work within the body of Christ.

My husband and I went to visit churches but have not been in a while. We never could find a home but we’re always visitors. But during that time it was in my mind that I don’t know what my spiritual gifts are. I still don’t know. Everyone has at least one, yeah? It is my understanding (right or wrong) that the gifts are for the perfecting of the saints, for others that they are able to bear all things and remain, for strengthening the brethren. I have faith that there will be spiritual fruit even though I haven’t seen it yet. His word says of eve who was deceived that “the woman” will be saved in bearing children. Fruit. I still have faith that the Spirit is perfecting and will finish what He said He will finish. So maybe the gift of Faith is a gift I’ve witnessed.
