“The Texas education board will vote Friday on a required reading list for more than 5 million school students that includes Bible passages, widening conservative efforts to push Christian teachings in U.S. classrooms.

The proposal in Texas - which would mandate literary works such as Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” alongside parables from the New Testament - has been closely followed by education observers who say it appears to be the first of its kind in the nation. …”

The deed is done.

“The Texas State Board of Education has voted to make Bible passages required reading in public schools.

The board, which is controlled by Republicans, voted to pass a new required reading list on Friday by a vote of 9-5-1. The list includes sections of the Book of Exodus for fifth graders, The Shepherd’s Psalm for seventh graders and more. …”

I doubt this will pass. If it does,no doubt it will meet with a challenge all the way to the USSC.

I suppose they took it out, we can put it back in.

Notice it is a State and not a Federal rule. It's not even a law because it didn't go through the legislature but through the Education Board of TX.
Which I believe will provide parents to decide if they want their children to opt out or not.
Republicans had to fight not to have trash in the classroom. Gender studies, lgbtq material, Social justice classes, and on and on.
Most parents didn't even know what material was given in the classroom. Don't ask, don't tell.
During covid lockdowns when kids did classes at home, the parents weren't allowed to be in the same room as their child, because they didn't want the parents "influencing" their children, or having any disclosure of what they were being taught.

I don't recall Education Boards sending notifications to the parents of the curriculum then. And they had to fight for opt out options.
This time if there is a fight, it will be with the TX Education Board. Because this isn't a U.S Department of Education issue.
It's not coming from the top down, its coming from the constituents of the State.

That's how I understand it.
Hugs

We'll have to see how this turns out.
I think if Christian students in public schools want to read .the Bible, they are able to do so. They can bring their Bibles to school.

Any student holding any faith is able to freely choose to pray in school if they wish. And read the holy book held dear in their faith.

I think if someone insists the Bible become part of a school curriculum, then they should enroll their child in a parochial school.

I hear you and I agree.
Right now it's just a battle to reestablish who gets to choose.
In order to undo what has been done, sometimes you need a temporary replacement to fill the gap.
Not all Christians are radicals. lol
Most probably would just prefer to go back to the basics.
Right now I think it's just a push back.
We'll have to wait and see.

I like to look at the proposal from the flip side in such cases. So to get a realistic footing on what is being asked of everyone concerned.

The flip side.
Imagine that Texas SB proposal as regards the Tanakh. Or, the Koran.
