John the Baptist, Christ called him Elijah who was to come, said John was the greatest Old Testament prophet born among women, in fact more than a prophet.
John himself says this,
"
He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. "
John 3
27 John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before Him.’ 29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. 30 He must increase, but I
must decrease.
Matthew 11
7 As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft
clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 10 For this is
he of whom it is written:
‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’
11 “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. 13
For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to receive
it, he is Elijah who is to come. 15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

John the Baptist represents the end of the time of the old covenant.
After John comes Christ who was before John, but everything is in its own time.
John came to prepare the way for the Lord.
Jesus fulfilled the law and the prophets, they are DONE., fulfilled in Christ,
for all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
Matthew 5:17
“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to
fulfill.
"He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. "
Christ establishes the new and the old is faded away, obsoleted.
Christ has the bride.
And we know that Christ builds His church.
Matthew 16
Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ
13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”
14 So they said, “Some
say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed
this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock
I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not [g]prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth [
h]will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
20 Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.

The church is the Bride that Christ has.
The friend of the bridegroom, John the Baptist, represents the end of the old covenant
The bride is something new, it is the church of Christ, He purchased with His blood, in essence He paid the bride price..
There was no church before Christ.
We are in the church age now, the ministry of the Holy Spirit has been poured out on His church, and the Spirit indwells believers, who are His temple.
