I think means that people are more obsessed to buy things with no regard for its effect on the earth. Buy and cast away. I think the god in the sky is who they would say is OK with it all. It is not a matter of being aware of the earth, other creatures. The shopping god says it is fine to satisfy yourself, with no regard to anyone else.

Everyone loves mammon or, at least, has loved mammon. Moving toward God and His Son is moving away from that.

There are some people who really do love God and as a result are striving to please Him. There seem to be many bearing the label of Christian who put too much emphasis on "me" and not enough on Him.

Who besides God can accurately separate the two?

Because as it reads on the 10 commandments, God is a jealous God and we are to worship Him alone. God is possessive of His creation.
