    We have heard the scripture regarding the unpardonable sin being "grieving the Holy Spirit". What does that mean, and how does this happen? I also heard translations as "blaspheming the Holy Spirit" and some others I do not really recall off hand.What is this, and why is this so bad?

    The one unpardonable sin that you speak of is the sin of not believing/acknowledging/accepting/etc. God. The best descriptions that come to mind are in Mark 3 and Matthew 12. This is a very complex issue of theology and somewhat difficult for me to explain. However, I'll give it my best.It works like this - Jesus is, in effect, saying if you deny one you deny all three. Without accepting the Holy Spirit (which is what comes in to you when you are saved), you have not accepted God or Jesus Christ as your personal savior. (Keep in mind with all the you's and your's that I'm not saying you as in the reader but just you in general.)I gave a speech about this for my senior speech at church. God layed it on my heart and this is something that I feel I've come to understand. Everyone speaks of the truth, and it is out there but in order to fully understand the workings on the Bible, you must allow for God to give you the knowledge. It comes from heaven and not from all of the reading and studying of the Bible in the world.Read Matthew 16:17 and Matthew 16:18. To me, this is one of the most important and powerful verses of the New Testament for any Christian.Matthew 1613 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. [The HOLY SPIRIT]18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.Does that make any sense? (I tried.)

    It'll take some time to digest. The one I heard was regarding the hardening of the spirit and not caring anymore such as no more conscious such as serial killers and the like. That made no sense, because God forgives murderers. Paul was a murderer and was saved and became one of the best known people in the bible right?Maybe I am off base here.

    One of the ultimate figures of the old Testament, David, was a murderer and you are certainly correct about Paul. God will forgive murderers - that may be upsetting to some but he does and it's in the Bible many times.The key here is that you accept Christ (God, the Holy Spirit). If you deny these then you have committed the unpardonable sin. So, if set murder commits the murder and never truly repents then they have committed the unpardonable sin.Of course, there's the sin today, repent tomorrow attitude that we go through but that's another discussion for another day.

    That is a good point, I know Paul talked about that somewhere. I'll have to look it up, because he was talking about the new covenant, and yes, I would love to discuss that aspect of faith. If we are saved and Christ forgives, does that mean we continue sinning thinking Jesus will forgive us later?Kind of milktoast if you ask me. What was that scripture regarding the lukewarm person that Christ will spew you from his mouth? Kinda scary.

    Revelation 3:16 That's a big theme in the NT. Christ answers our question right here. Either you're fully on, or you're off.Galatians 3 is a good writing of Paul's about sin.

    19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
    This part does it for me. It seems like many people Christian and otherwise get into the way of thinking that heaven, or the afterlife, is somehow seperate from earthly life. ex. We do good deeds and move on to something completely different. Jesus makes it clear here that actions in the material world become manifest in the non-material world.Many people deny the presence of God and the holy spirit (ignorance) but even worse actions take place. It it possible for one that believes in God to blaspheme the holy spirit which is much worse than ignorance.

    I agree. When we become believers, it is like we bring a little bit of heaven down to earth by the power of the Holy Spirit. :cross2: As far as the unpardonable sin, I agree it's the rejection of Jesus Christ. I've heard over and over that if you are afraid that you may have committed the unpardonable sin, you probably haven't.Did you get a bible yet, Bope?

    Exactly. Paul's writings are ideal for explaining this though they can sometimes be very confusing. That's where God first off, and hopefully this community, to an extent, can step in and help out.I'd have to readily agree with the observation that you have heard.

    I read your reply quickly the first time, and I thought you said you had one in the garbage somewhere (gasp!). Apparantly that is incorrect; it is in your garage (whew!)

    Hi,,,, I read this post.........I just wanted to add my thoughts to it.Matthew 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy God in vain; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.I am no theologian.......... Taking the HOLY SPIRITS NAME in vein...........I ponder this is doing that same thing using the name of the Holy Spirit with vulgarity........... Tread here lightly..............we are better off not to even think of it.God Bless

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Once Saved..........if one is to sin............or back slide.............One grieves the Holy Spirit.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`II Corinthians 5: 17 When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay? BACKSLIDING-NO LONGER IN THE WORD.Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.Rom8:19 19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.Ephesians 4:30 30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.I Thessalonians 5:19 19 Quench not the Spirit.Once saved……….obtaining the righteousness of Christ within you.Should you backslide you having the Spirit of God will grieve when you backslide. Only will a true convicted heart grieve ……………….For example…………… TWO MEN FROM THE SAME CHURCH GO HUNTING……….. THEY RUN INTO A FEW WOMEN AND SIN.ONE GOES HOME AND SLEEPS LIKE A BABY …………..THE OTHER GOES HOME AND IS UP ALL NIGHT CRYING.ONE IS GRIEVED IN HIS SPIRIT, THE OTHER FEELS NOTHING.DAVID SINNED AND GRIEVED. He wrote eight Psalms called penitential,,,,,,,,grieving.Psalm 51:12 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.< OH LORD RESTORE UNTO ME………………………………. NOT MY SALVATION …………………..MY JOY…………….Hebrews 12:5 5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: WHOM HE LOVES HE SPANKS!IF GOD DOES NOT SPANK YOU WHEN YOU SIN THEN YOU A BASTARD. IF YOU DO NOT GRIEVE OR GET SPANKED YOU ARE AN ILLIGETAMETE CHILD. MY CHILDREN GET PUNISHED WHEN THEY BACKSLIDE. Hebrews12:8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.I JOHN5:16 16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.I Corinthians 3: 17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.Corinthians 11:27Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.NOT SOUL ………………BODY. AND MANY ARE SICK WEAK AND DIEBECAUSE THEY DRINK AND EAT WITHOUT FIRST CONFESSION OF THEIR SINS UNTO GOD. DEATH OF THE BODY IS THE PRICE EVEN UNTO AN EARLY GRAVE. ONE ACTUALLY DRINKS AND EATS DAMNATION OF HIS OWN BODY UNTO HIMSELF.God Bless
