I’ll take your points one at a time....
It was Jewish belief that Solomon reiterated in Ecclesiastes 9:5;6,10. There was no such thing as an immortal soul ever mentioned in any passage of their scripture. And with the writing of the NT and it’s inclusion in sacred scripture, there continued to be no immortal souls mentioned.
“And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” (Daniel 12:2 KJ21)
Jewish belief in the resurrection was not superseded....Jesus simply made clear that his Father had chosen some to join his son in heaven, beginning with the 12 apostles. Others called “saints” or “holy ones” (his elect) would be “chosen from among mankind” to go to heaven, but they would “sleep” until Christ’s return. At that time, the “saints” would rise and those of the “heavenly calling” who were still alive at that time would not need to “sleep”, but would rise instantly, leaving their flesh behind and being “born again” as spirit beings.
The spirit realm is inhabited by non-material, spiritual beings, whereas the material realm is inhabited by mortal, material beings (souls) of infinite variety. Mortals need external means of life support (air, food and water)....spirit beings do not need these things.
What happened in Judaism was repeated in Christianity, just as Jesus foretold.
The “weeds” of his parable were not sown recently, but were knocking at the door even when the apostles were still alive. They acted as a “restraint” until the last writings of the Christian scriptures were completed by the apostle John at the close of the first century.
It was then that the “weeds” took over and eventually brought Christendom into existence after a slow and steady decline in upholding the teachings of the Christ. Beliefs and practices were adopted from pagan sources, just as the Jews had done....meaning that the disunited churches of Christendom have very little in common with first century Christianity....but who would know that if they had not studied the original in order to identify the counterfeit?
People today accept things that Christ never taught....but it is the only “Christianity” they have ever known. The devil is a master deceiver and he has had more time up his sleeve than we have.
Are we his victims? It is our responsibility to know where our beliefs come from.
As Jesus was Jewish and so were all the Bible writers, we cannot dismiss the Jewish scripture from which they taught. The NT was not written as part of scripture at that time....it was the Hebrew Scriptures that Paul said were “inspired of God” and ‘beneficial for settling all questions’. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

No, that is not true. The soul is a living, breathing creature....it is very mortal. Solomon again said that animals die and humans die the same kind of death as they do. (Ecclesiastes 3:20-21) Just like Adam, they “return to the dust” and await a resurrection, as Daniel said in his prophesy on the “time of the end”.

Literally? No. Metaphorically? Yes. There are many references to those who “sleep” in death. Most notably by Jesus himself in speaking about his friend Lazarus. (John 11:11-14) Paul too spoke of those “asleep” in their graves. (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17)

I don’t think that thought ever crossed my mind. The scriptures are there to tell us the truth. Men have twisted the scriptures for centuries and led people in many different directions.

Sorry, but unbelieving Jews have nothing to do with Bible based beliefs. Jesus himself taught from Jewish scripture, as did the apostles....so it isn’t the scriptures that are in error...it’s the misinterpretation and manipulation of scripture that steered people in the wrong direction back then. Jesus said that they had adopted “the traditions of men” and that these invalidated their worship of God. (Matthew 15:7-9)
