He was crucified on a Wednesday:
Late Wednesday: Jesus is crucified and buried.
Early Thursday (Passover) through Late Saturday (Sabbath): Jesus is in the tomb.
Friday (between the two Sabbaths): the women buy and prepare the spices.
Early Sunday: Jesus rises from the dead, and the women find the empty tomb.
There's no scripture quote to support your theory He's risen early Sunday, but only the tomb was found empty.

A new day starts in Israel at sunset, so Thursday night of 12 hours till dawn Jesus was in the heart of the earth.

Then 12 hours of day to sunset = 1 nigh & day in the heart of the earth.

Friday night of 12 hours and from dawn 12 hours of day to sunset = 2 night & day in the heart of the earth.

Saturday night of 12 hours and from dawn 12 hours of day to sunset = 3 night & day in the heart of the earth.

After sunset Sunday night Jesus rose from the dead completing 3 nights & 3 days or 3 days & 3 nights.

Sunday at dawn merely the tomb was found empty, with no Christ inside or outside, but just 2 angels inside who've said,

"Why seek the living among the dead?"

Apparently Jesus was already up and about beginning of Sunday night and among the living.

It's just the West church fathers and tradition got mixed up the risen Sunday calendar, as their's at dawn and Israel's at sunset.

Shalom in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord

Sabbath was the seventh day of the week. Sabbath started sundown Friday.
The first and seventh days of Passover are sabbath days (high sabbaths). If one of those falls on the seventh day of the week then the other cannot possibly fall on seventh day of the week. Only the normal weekly sabbath always falls on seventh day of the week, the high sabbaths can fall on any day of the week, so you are wrong to assume and insist that it is referring to the seventh day of the week.

Because of the words in parentheses they are designating the sabbath day outside of the parentheses as a special day. It was just NOT an usual Sabbath but a high Sabbath for it started the feast of unleavened bread.
It could also be interpreted as saying that the upcoming sabbath day was a high sabbath day, rather than the weekly sabbath day, i.e. you shouldn't assume that the two sabbath days (one a high sabbath, the other a normal weekly sabbath day) fall on the same day. The fact that it is pointing out that the day about to start was a high sabbath day is an indication that it might not be a Friday. Remember Matthew 28:1 says "the sabbaths" - sabbaths, plural. If the high sabbath fell on the same day as the weekly sabbath then there would only have been one sabbath day (single, not plural).

Just keep on ignoring the scripture which says that Jesus spoke about the sign of Jonas before he began to teach them, and
Keep on ignoring the many scriptures that say that Jesus ate the Passover meal with his disciples (on the same night that he was betrayed),
And you will never get to the truth of the matter.
The matter is further complicated by misgivings of what John meant when he used the phrase, "preparation of the passover".

The biggest thing that people miss is the fact that Jesus was brought before Pilate three times on the day of his crucifixion. The first time was before day break. [John 18] The second was after dawn and the meeting of the high council. And the third was after Jesus was sent to Herod (Luke 23:6-15].

On the 2nd and 3rd occasions, it was inside the judgment hall. The first one was not (John 18:28-29). Pilate (on the first occasion) came out to them (Jesus and the Jews)... because they would not go into the judgment hall, lest they be defiled from eating the passover. The common misconception is that they might eat the passover when it [supposedly] arrived the next day. But when we look at Luke's account (and John's) we find that they brought Jesus into the judgment hall. For Pilate even says "I have examined him before you and find no fault with him", Luke 23:14.

Have you put the pieces together? They didn't go until the judgment hall the first time, because it was before dawn, when the passover must be eaten. But they did go into the judgment hall on the 2nd and 3rd occasions because the time for eating the passover meal had passed. It was still the same day (which begins at evening). Defilement was no longer an issue [even though the passover meal was (SUPPOSEDLY) still yet in the future... tomorrow! ]
The phrase "preparation of the passover " doesn't mean the day before, it means the day of the passover. For John used the same phrase of the daylight hours.

I won't go into a long discourse, but it is from Exodus 12 (et al) that we learn that the passover meal and the feast of unleavened bread, begin at the same time... on the 14th day of the month at evening, ala, the beginning of the 15th day of the month.

Be Blessed

Actually, Saturday sunset to Sunday sunrise is one night, not one day. So that makes two days and two nights ; it's missing a day and a night.

What a silly mistake!! Thank you for pointing that out!!
If Jesus died on the Thursday rather than the Friday, then it makes the prophesied three days and three nights.
That's what I think.

Much love!

Expanding on this, where was the Spirit of Christ for the time His body was dead.
Christ did actually die, he went the way of all flesh in death.
What do you believe?

12 Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. 14 His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; 15 His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; 16 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. 17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying [i]to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. 18 I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of [j]Hades and of Death.
He was at work my friend . Through death HE overcame HE who had the power of death .
He had to take on flesh , HE came to fulllfill all righteousness and sinned not even once
He then took the sins of the world upon Him so that all who do beleive in HIM could be saved from death
and recieve eternal life .
And though this generation calls him but a man , but a prophet
HIMS WAS FAR MORE THAN THAT .
HE was in the beginning and All things were made by HIM . HE IS THE WORD OF GOD and GOD IS HIS WORD .
He conquered death and HE who had the power over it .
But unto all who beleive in the interfaith lie that all paths lead to GOD , beleiving other religoins serve the same GOD we do
and give out false hope , THEY GONNA BURN DOUBLE BAD , for they USED HIS NAME , My goodness
THEY USED the name of JESUS to TROD HIM UNDER FOOT . scott that is darn scary . so my advice
about interfaith which I KNOW is of anti christ , remains the same,
HAVE NO PART IN IT , WITH IT , Be no co helper to that which TRODS THE DIRE NEED TO BELIEVE ON JESUS under foot .
For what does LIGHT have in common WITH DARKNESS , and let all who name the name of CHRIST
depart from inquity . SUre hope that encourages you my friend .
I dont support , nor should any of us support in any way , any shape , any fashion
THAT which TRODS CHRIST RIGHT UNDER FOOT and plays as though one does not have TO BELEIVE ON HIM
as does INTERFAITH INTERRELIGIOUS dilagoue . DONT even bid such men god speed
Have no part in it and rather expose its fat inclusive road .

I have read all the theories online about 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth, and find them all lacking something, in my own mind, nothing really fits with our thinking of days and nights.

I still believe Jesus was killed on Friday afternoon and raised Sunday morning, according to our calendar and thinking of what defines a day and a night.

From my thoughts, I will put this out here.
To the Jews a day begins with nightfall when it gets dark, the sun goes down, our day begins at 12:01 AM. Theirs might begin at sunset, like 7-9 pm

The key is don't think of a standard 24 hour period to define these 3 days and 3 nights.
The way I am thinking is we can get an extra day.

The day he was crucified, later on it got completely dark over all the land, this was an end of the prior day called Friday, He died then at the end of Friday as the darkness came ( we are between day 1 and day 2).
We get the first day and first night. So, a partial day-night period, a shortened day.

As in on Friday on Cross at noon, dies in afternoon it gets super dark at His death signaling the beginning of the next day, another shortened Friday.

We now get an extra day.

The sun shines again for a few hours and they bury Him in the tomb the '2nd day' which is really part of the first day as we would think of it in our time.

The second day now has begun, and he is buried at the beginning of the sabbath day at night, you know, before midnight, what we call Friday evening.

The 3rd day is the Sabbath.
Sabbath begins Friday around 7-9 pm
Sabbath day, third day ends with the sun come up
Jesus rises very early on the third day according to our way of thinking, but when he rises it is at the end of the Sabbath day according to Jewish thinking of days.

In the early morning of the first day of the week He rises. This is Sunday morning
The Sunday DAY, third day, begins at what we call Saturday night and ends with the sun coming up.

That would account for 3 days and 3 nights.
And He rises on the third day, Sunday morning.

Jesus Dies on the Cross
45 Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

47 Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” 48 Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.

49 The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”

50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.

Here is evidence of God defining a day without the sun.
Genesis 1
3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. [b]So the evening and the morning were the first day.

The day is defined as a period of light and darkness. Nothing to do with the sunlight

You need to learn that Passove (the whole feast) is 8 days which includes the feast of unleavened bread so if Passover is Friday it is also the preparation day and that Sabbath or Saturday following Passover would be a high Sabbath.

Jesus died on Passover as He was the lamb of God killed to remove sins.

No it cannot be interpreted that way. It can be reinterpreted that way but that is disingenuous. The contstruct of the sentence cannot allow for your opinion. It is that simple. There is no interpreting this, just accepting what is written.

It should if you believe jesus knew how to speak and inspire writings correctly.
Jesus wasn't speaking in any of those verses, and Scripture is given by inspiration of God, not Jesus (2 Timothy 3:16). Regardless, you writing "it cannot be interpreted that way. It can be reinterpreted that way" doesn't clear up anything!

Firstly, in ancient Israel, a new day began and ended at sunset. The Hebraic idiom "three days and three nights" meant a period of approx. three days, rather than a literal seventy-two hours.

Secondly, when determining how long someone has been lifeless, you go by their time/day of death, not burial. According to the Evangelists, Jesus died at “the ninth hour” (3 pm) in the late afternoon on “Preparation day, the day before the Sabbath” (Friday) (Matt. 27:46;50, Mk.15:34;37;15:42, and Lk. 23:44;46), and the women disciples started walking to Jesus's sepulcher to anoint His body on “the first day of the week” (Sunday) when it was “beginning to dawn” and "still dark" (Matt. 28:1, Lk. 24:1, Jn. 20:1).

Thirdly, the Evangelists don't mention the exact time of Jesus's resurrection, but based on their accounts of the time/day of death (3 pm on Friday) and discovery of the empty tomb on Sunday morning, we know that Jesus wasn't lifeless for seventy-two hours, and that corresponds with Jesus's use of the Hebraic idiom "three days and three nights", meaning any portion of the first day, all the second day, and any part of the third day. This interpretation allows for variations from a strict seventy-two-hour time frame.

While the exact time of Jesus's resurrection can't be determined from what we have of the Evangelist's accounts, Jesus has made that detail known through His "pen" Maria Valtorta. She took dictation from Him and He said that His body had been lifeless for thirty-eight hours from His time of death of 3 pm on Friday (The Poem of the Man-God: Vol. V), which places His resurrection around 5 am on Sunday, and this corresponds with the Hebraic idiom "three days and three nights", as well as the women disciples discovering the empty tomb on Sunday morning.

Thursday ends and Friday begins at sunset (day 1)
Friday 3 pm: Jesus dies
Friday 3 pm to sunset:
Jesus’s Body remained lifeless

Saturday begins at sunset
(day 2)
Saturday: Jesus’s Body remained lifeless

Sunday begins at sunset
(day 3)
Sunday sunset to 5 am: Jesus’s Body remained lifeless
Sunday 5 am:
Jesus resurrects

The point is, the burial day on Friday and the resurrection day on Sunday at dawn, doesn't add up.

Before we can continue meaningfully, we need to know which time‑reckoning method you’re using to interpret the phrases "on the third day," “after three days,” “in three days”, and “three days and three nights", and from which weekday you begin counting. Please select the following options that apply.

I. Counting Method (choose one)

Option A.
Jewish Inclusive Reckoning Method
  • sunset-to-sunset day cycle
  • any part of a day counts as a full day
  • any part of a night counts as a full night
Option B: Modern Literal (72‑hour) Reckoning
  • three full, consecutive 24‑hour periods
Option C: Other (please specify)

2. Crucifixion Day (choose one)

Option A:
Thursday 3 PM

Option B: Friday 3 PM

Option C: Other (please specify)

The prophecy that shall come to pass said by the Lord Himself is, the Son of man in the heart of the earth for 3 days and 3 nights as was Jonah in the belly of the fish.

Also He mentioned to the Jews in the Gospel, isn't there 12 hours in a day where you labour?

Apparently Jesus meant 12 hours of daytime also Israel as a nation experiences, during when the Jews labor, compared to the 12 hours of night when it's dark.

Next, Sunday at dawn women found the tomb empty with no sign of their Rabboni, and it's the first day of the week.

Sunday begins from Saturday sunset with 12 hours of night and ends by Sunday sunset with 12 hours of day.

Therefore the cycle of 12 hours of night and 12 hours of day have gone by to call it Sunday.

The Son of man must be exactly in the heart of the earth for 3 daytimes of 36 hours and 3 nighttimes of 36 hours = 72 hours.

Sunday dawn tomb was already empty and Sunday from Saturday sunset beginning with 12 hours of night is completed.

We go backwards, and Saturday daytime is another day of 12 hours = 1 day and night.

From Friday sunset to the beginning of Saturday nighttime another 12 hours cycle completed.

Friday daytime of 12 hours cycle is completed = 2 days and nights.

Thursday sunset to the begining of Friday nightime of 12 hours cycle also completed.

Therefore Thursday daytime of 12 hours after 6 am dawn roughly is completed = 3 days and 3 nights.

The Messiah on the Cross breathe His last breath at 3 pm but yet remain hanging on the Cross, until it was nearing close to the preparation of the Passover.

The Romans soldiers had to quicken the death of the 3 men hanging on the Cross, until finding out Jesus was already dead, and to make sure they used the spear.

By the time they put Him in the tomb, meaning in the heart of the earth, nearing sunset and close to Passover.

Apparently after burial and nearing sunset, there's an extra 12 hours of Thursday nightime = 3 days and 4 nights, hence doesn't add up as well.

Therefore He did not resurrect at Sunday dawn but rather after Saturday sunset to comnplete even 3 nights and 3 days, no matter which comes first.

Let's say, He was crucified on Wednesday, as when the yearly Passover begins after sunset, on Thursday night where He's already buried and in the heart of the earth.

Then begins His first night and day on Thursday to sunset, followed by His second night and day on Friday to sunset, lastly followed by His third night and day on Saturday to sunset.

Where was He after sunset begining of Sunday He resurrected which is at night in Israel, is not written, but He was around there nearby the tomb whereby dicovered by Mary Magdalene mistaken for a gardener.

God ·named [called] the light “day” and the darkness “night.” ·Evening passed, and morning came [L There was evening and there was morning; C in the OT a day begins at nightfall]. This was the first day.

in the OT a day begins at nightfall

Why the OT Day Begins at Nightfall

In the Hebrew Bible, a “day” (yom) is not defined by sunrise or midnight, but by the cycle of evening and morning. Genesis 1:5 describes how God “called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and there was morning: one day” Bible Gateway. This pattern — darkness (night) before light (day) — is repeated for each day of creation.

Biblical and Traditional Definition

In Jewish tradition, the day begins at nightfall, specifically when the sun sets and the first stars appear (tzeit hakochavim) Chabad.org+1. This is distinct from the secular calendar, which starts at midnight. The phrase “evening and morning” in Genesis reflects that the day’s cycle is measured from the end of one period of light to the end of the next.

Spiritual and Cultural Meaning

Beginning the day at nightfall carries symbolic weight:

  • Renewal in darkness: Darkness precedes light, suggesting that growth, clarity, and purpose often emerge after periods of uncertainty or waiting Hebrewversity.
  • Shabbat as a model: Shabbat begins at nightfall with candle lighting, marking a transition from the week’s activity to sacred rest Hebrewversity.
  • Lunar calendar alignment: Jewish holidays and months begin at night, aligning with the moon’s appearance, which itself is a symbol of renewal emerging from shadow Hebrewversity.

Practical Application

  • Shabbat: Lasts from one nightfall to the next, not from sunset to sunrise Chabad.org.
  • Festivals: Passover, Sukkot, Rosh Hashanah, and others begin at nightfall Hebrewversity.
  • Daily rhythm: The evening becomes a threshold — a time to reflect, rest, and prepare for the next day.
In short, the OT day begins at nightfall because the biblical narrative and Jewish tradition frame time as a cycle of light and darkness, with renewal starting in the quiet before the light. This rhythm shapes worship, holidays, and the way Jewish communities experience time.

Your entire reconstruction depends on a private, improvised counting system that neither Jesus nor His audience ever used. That’s why I asked you to choose a reckoning method first—because without a consistent method, any timeline can be forced to “fit,” even if it contradicts the Gospel accounts themselves.

The core issue you still haven’t addressed

I asked you two simple clarifying questions:

  1. Which reckoning method are you using?
    • Jewish Inclusive Reckoning
    • literal 72‑hour
    • or something else
  2. Which weekday do you believe the crucifixion occurred?
You didn’t answer either one.
Instead, you created a new hybrid system that:

  • requires exact 12‑hour day segments
  • requires exact 12‑hour night segments
  • rejects any part‑day counting
  • rejects Sunday dawn as “too early”
  • counts burial only after sunset
  • but also counts “near sunset” as a full night
  • and then shifts the crucifixion day multiple times to fix contradictions
This is not Jewish reckoning, not Roman reckoning, not literal 72‑hour reckoning, and not anything the biblical writers used.

Without a consistent method, your conclusion can’t be evaluated.

Your system contradicts the Gospel data

The Gospels state plainly:

  • Jesus rose on the first day of the week (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2; Luke 24:1; John 20:1).
  • The disciples on Sunday said, “today is the third day since these things happened” (Luke 24:21).
  • Preparation Day = the day before the Sabbath (Mark 15:42).
  • The Sabbath began at Friday sunset (Luke 23:54).
Your timeline requires:
  • resurrection Saturday night, not Sunday
  • Sunday morning not being “the third day”
  • the women arriving after the resurrection, not before
  • the Sabbath being something other than the weekly Sabbath
  • the burial not counting as “in the heart of the earth” until hours later
These are direct conflicts with the text.

Your own calculation collapses under its rules

You argued:

  • Jesus must be in the earth exactly 72 hours
  • Thursday burial produces 3 days and 4 nights
  • therefore Thursday doesn’t work
  • therefore resurrection must be Saturday night
  • therefore crucifixion must be Wednesday
  • therefore the women found the tomb empty Sunday dawn even though He rose Saturday night
This is not a coherent timeline.
It is a series of adjustments to rescue a predetermined conclusion.

Why I asked you to choose a method

Because once a method is chosen, the timeline becomes testable.
  • Jewish inclusive reckoning → Friday burial to Sunday dawn = “the third day.”
  • Literal 72‑hour reckoning → Sunday dawn cannot be “the third day.”
  • Your hybrid system → contradicts both Scripture and itself.
Until you identify which method you are using, the discussion can’t move forward.

So before we go any further, please answer the original question:

Which reckoning method are you using—Jewish inclusive, literal 72‑hour, or a different one you can define clearly and consistently?
