The 'Lord, Lord' works done Without "repentance and faith"?:

"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that
doeth The Will of My Father Which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord,
have we not prophesied in Thy Name? and in Thy Name have cast out devils? and in Thy Name
done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I Never Knew you: depart
from me, ye that work iniquity." (Matthew 7:21-23 AV)

What are dead works?

Hebrews 6:1
…repentance from dead works…

Thks
Hebrews 6:1 refers and appeals to noting the times, as being past the foundation laid by Israel, and even past the basic or elementary principles of Christ. As a way of saying, that knowing where we are in the greater plan of God, we ought not dwell or stop there, but press on to what God has in store, and the very purpose of why those former things were established and brought into being and to pass. That they were brought to pass--not to remain in, as if to build the foundation of a house and not actually continue on to build the upper structure.

A matter that the church has mostly failed in.

Legalism says, you are accepted, because you perform. License says, because you are accepted, obedience does not matter. Paul rejects both, then he gives the command that frames the whole passage, Galatians 5:16, the word flesh here does not mean the physical body is evil. Paul is not teaching hatred of the body, he is describing fallen human nature turned away from God, the old self-directed life that bends even good things inward until they become idols. Right before Galatians 5:22-23, Paul lists what that old life produces, sexual immorality, impurity, idolatry, hatred, strife, jealousy, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambition, dissensions, envy, drunkenness and more. You can almost hear a church coming apart in this list, arguments at tables, rival groups forming in corners, people measuring each other’s spirituality, freedom becoming self-protection, desire becoming law.

Scripture convinces me that the lineage of Paul teaches me how I am saved and not the lineage of Peter, John etc.
A Gentile believer sits at the table, still new to the scriptures of Israel, still learning the story of Abraham, Moses, David and the prophets, he has been told that through faith in Jesus Christ, he belongs, he is not a guest on the edge of God’s family, he is an heir. Then another teacher arrives and says, in effect, faith in Jesus is good, but it is not enough, you still need circumcision, you still need to take on the identity markers of the law of Moses, you need Jesus plus this. For that new believer, the question is not theoretical, it is the question of belonging, did Paul tell me the whole truth or am I still standing outside the door? That question would touch everything, it would touch who could eat together, who could marry whom, who could be called brother, who could pray with confidence, who could stand up in the assembly without feeling like a second-class believer, a doctrine that sounds abstract on paper becomes painful when it decides where you sit at the table.

What are dead works?

Hebrews 6:1
…repentance from dead works…

Thks

Hebrews 9:14,
- how much more shall the blood of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God

In this context from dead works is probably speaking of the ashes of the red heifer which cleansed from ceremonial defilement caused by the contact with a dead body.
The blood of Christ cleanses the conscience from the defilement of dead works.

This was practised under the old law.
Numbers 19:9,
- and a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer and lay them up without the camp in a clean place and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of seperation:
It is a purification for sin

The ashes were mixed with water for purification of anyone who touched a dead body.
This ritual restored ceremonial cleanliness. It did not remove moral guilt from sin.

Numbers 19:11,
- he that touches the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days

Hebrews 9:13-14,
- for if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh

- how much more shall the blood of Christ who though the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God

The blood of Christ cleanses the conscience from the defilement of dead works.

Hebrews 6:1,
- repentance from dead works...

They need to repent, change their mind of reliance on Levitical sacrifices from justification and remission of sins is not what the writer is saying they need to repent of. Yes these sacrifices cannot forgive sins. And they are no longer in effect as they are replaced with the new covenant, the law of Christ, Galatians 6:2.

Instead repentance of dead works are their sinful actions which produce death, Romans 6:23.
This is why the author uses the expression to purify the conscious from dead works. To serve the living God.

Dead works are their sins. When these sins are removed by believing in Jesus and obeying His commandments ones conscience is cleansed of the sins they commited.

Good question. Dead works are the things we do to try to earn God's favor apart from faith in Christ, religious effort with no living trust behind it. Hebrews calls us to repent of them and press on. Works that flow from faith are alive; works done to replace faith are not.

Yet today does it matter from where you come from or what your roots are ?
Aren't we all saved by the one gospel ?
What passages teach the gospel you are saved by ?
God calls you to build a guard over your mind, a spiritual filter, every idea, every story, every suggestion that anxiety throws at you must pass a test. 2 Corinthians 10:5, not every thought deserves to live in your mind, not every worry deserves a place at your table, not every fear deserves your agreement, you have the power through the Holy Spirit to test every thought, to measure it against truth, to cast it down if it does not align with the heart of God. Like 2 Timothy 1:7, if God didn’t give it, why are you carrying it, the spirit of lust is more than sexual temptation, its hunger dislocated, it stirs obsession with images, fantasy, stimulation, it reshapes your brain to confuse intimacy with indulgence, it haunts your quiet moments and it often works with shame to create the perfect trap.

@CoachedByChrist post no. 8

Simple.
To the point.
He said it correctly.

No work is truly dead since it will always help humanity in some way.
Atheist doctors that try to help sick persons in 3rd world countries are not doing a dead work.

However, biblically speaking it is a work that is done that will be in vain as far as God is concerned.
It is a work done without faith in God.

If we want to dig a little deeper, I suggest going with @quietthinker in post no. 5

Yes, salvation cannot be obtained without repentance from dead works.

Romans 6:23,
- for the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord

Repentance for the lost involves new knowledge of Jesus and His gospel.
The knowledge from the gospel brings about godly sorrow for Christ being tortured to death for our sins as He was the only perfect "lamb" without spot(sin) that could atone for our sin wage.

As the writer of Hebrews noted the blood of animals could not atone for mans sin debt.
Only Gods Son was the perfect sacrifice to cleanse sin with His shed blood.

The knowledge gained from hearing the gospel, causes godly sorrow which leads to repentance from dead works.
Faith and repentance must occur in the lost sinner for Jesus' blood to cleanse us from a gulity conscience.

Hebrews 10:4, Hebrews 9:14
- for it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins
- how much more shall the blood of Christ purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God

Hebrews 6:2,
- not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms and the laying on of hands and the ressurection of the dead and of eternal judgment

- repentance from dead works....
2Corinthians 7:10,
- for godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation without regret, whereas worldly sorrow produces death

Why is it necessary to state that we must repent from dead works??
Isn't it enough to say that we must repent?

I did notice that you're using the word REPENT correctly,,so I won't repeat.

Honestly I think the simplest picture is in Hebrews 9:14, where Christ's blood cleanses our conscience from dead works so we can serve the living God. Dead works feel like effort that's trying to earn what's already been given, like running on a treadmill to prove you belong. I've seen people (and been there myself) exhausted from performing, and the relief when it clicks that God's acceptance isn't a paycheck is huge. The works that come after, out of gratitude, are alive. Hope that helps with your question, and thanks for asking it, because a lot of us wrestle with this.

I like this version for Hebrews 6:1-2 NLT

1So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely we don’t need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting from evil deedsa and placing our faith in God.

2You don’t need further instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3And so, God willing, we will move forward to further understanding.

Here the writer states that dead works are, basically, evil deeds and we are go on, instead, to place our faith in God.

Seems christendom today is Still Throughly Confused about these, hence all the discussions trying
to
Sort them out, eh?:

Then these types Obedient works are living?:

"Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy Name?

If so, then why This Declaration?:

"...And then Will I Profess unto them, I Never Knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity."
(Matthew 7:23 AV) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [ Dead works? ]

People are confused but not all.
The works under discussion in Hebrews 6:2 are laws of Moses. The levitical laws.
Old covenant laws that NO ONE is commanded or bound to follow today.
Dead works, old testament laws, Yes. New covenant laws are in effect until Christ comes again at His second coming. These are not dead works.
We cannot ignore the context.

Then these types Obedient works are living?:

"Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy Name?and in Thy Name have cast out devils? and in Thy Name done many wonderful works?..."(Matthew 7:22 AV)

The gospel of Christ is the law today. When obeyed these works are certainly not dead.
Peter commanded the Jews in Acts 3 to turn away from the old testament law toward believing in their Messiah,
Acts 3:1-19,
- but those things which God before had showed by the mouth of His prophets that Christ should suffer, He hath so fullfilled
- repent ye therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord

Matthew 7:22-23 does not disprove obedience required by God to receive grace, eternal life.

Jesus is condemning those who DO NOT OBEY HIM.
Notice they claim to be faithfull followers of Christ but Jesus condemns them.
Why?
Grace Ambassador, friend you missed why Jesus condemns them.
It is not because they did works of obedience. It was for disobedience.
Jesus said they were LAWBREAKERS!!!!

Matthew 7:21-23,
- Not everyone that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven but
he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven
- many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name have cast out devils and in thy name done many wonderful works
- and I will profess unto them, I never knew you, depart from Me ye that work lawlessness

They were not working Gods will friend.
They were workers of iniquity.
They were works of sin of breaking Gods law.
Not following Gods will.

Just wondering [ So much for { proposed By Many } Obedience Required For Eternal Salvation, eh? ]...
Grace Ambassador, there is only one gospel not two.
Peter preached one must believe and obey God to be saved.
Exactly what Jesus is teaching in Matthew 7:21-23.
Paul did not preach a different gospel from Peter.
Paul's gospel was not belief only with no obedience.
Paul and Peter preached the same gospel, Ephesians 4:5.
Please leave the false dispensationalist theology.
It is unbiblical, unscriptual error.
