Futurism -- is simply a seminary doctrine belonging to certain Christian denominations that base their understanding of end time prophecy on a pre-tribulational rapture by Jesus, meaning Jesus' future return and gathering of His Church prior... to the "great tribulation" at the end of this world. Because these do grasp that many Bible prophecies exist still yet unfulfilled, like the coming of the Antichrist at the end of this world and a time of trouble Jesus called "great tribulation", they are labeled as Futurists by seminary folks. It's actually a silly category label, because there are many both Catholics and Protestants that do not believe in a Pre-trib Rapture, but do agree about the coming of the Antichrist for the end of this world, and the setting up of an IDOL ABOMINATION in JERUSALEM for false worship.

Preterism -- is closely related to Historicism. Both try to match Bible prophecy with history in attempt to prove that MOST ALL OF THE BIBLE has already been fulfilled, and that we just await Christ's 2nd coming. The term Preterism actually originates from the word 'preter', which means 'what is past'. These Christian denominations rarely cover Bible prophecy about the end, as their seminary doctors tell them Books like Revelation are mostly already fulfilled some time back in history. Historicism does much the same working, and really most of the time it's difficult to tell the difference between Preterist and Historicist doctrines of men. The worse case of Preterism is called "Full Preterism" which treats Jesus' 2nd coming as already having happened back in the days of His Apostles, which idea definitely... is outside of God's Word.

The KEY -- is very simple.
Become a little familiar with those seminary doctrines of men, enough so that when you meet someone pushing them, you'll recognize their error away from the simplicity of God's Word. At the same time, one must... discipline theirself in study of God's written Word ... without... influence of those seminary doctrines of men. Those seminary doctrines of men are very sneaky, just like the doctrines of the Pharisees were which Jesus rebuked. Until you get a 'working' understanding in God's written Word, you could easily think all their doctrines are actually The Word of God when they are not. And just like how the devil added to God's Word in Luke 4 when tempting Jesus, those doctrines of men also must use much of the actual Word of God in order to push their 'leaven'. And remember what Apostle Paul said, a little leaven leaventh the whole lump (Galatians 5:9).
