Jesus told His Apostles

Matt 16:19, 18:18

Amen, I say to you, WHATEVER YOU BIND on earth shall be bound in heaven, and WHATEVER YOU LOOSE on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

At the Last Supper, He assured them:
John 16:12-15
“I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.
But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to ALL truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to YOU the things that are coming.
He will glorify me, because he will TAKE from what is MINE and declare it to YOU.
Everything that the Father has is MINE; for this reason I told you that he will TAKE from what is MINE and declare it to YOU.

In the NT, we see them gathering in prayer and taking up prayer collection on the FIRST day of the week – the Lord’s Day (Acts 20:7, 1 Cor. 16:2, Rev. 1:10).
Paul reminds his readers that the Sabbath was a SHADOW of things to come but the reality is Christ the Lord (Col. 2:16-67).
I figured this would be your defense. A doctrine, an all pervasive generalization that at the word of the believer, can justify anything... And historically did, including the genocide of cultures... And even the intent and attempt to the changing of God's own laws which Jesus declared would stand forever.
KJV Matthew 5:17-18
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Well did Daniel prophecy of the little horn that he would think to change times and laws, one of several specific criteria that mark and identify the Antichrist.
KJV Daniel 7:24-25
24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.
25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

PS. one wonders why it took the apostles 300 years to realize their power... Oh wait, they didn't. It was a church descending into apostasy that did that.

There is a little bit of a funny here......but some of it is serious.
Some do not understand that there are two religions here.....Judaism and Christianity.
That there are two Covenants.....what we call the Old Covenant with God and the New Covenant with God.
The Mosaic Law is part of the Old Covenant with God and the Law has not changed. Christ never intended to change the Mosaic Law or end them until all things are fulfilled. When Christ was talking about the Law....the Old Covenant was the only Covenant in force, so that is no surprise. So as it is the Law is in full force for those in the Old Covenant with God....that is the Jews....even today.

The Mosaic Law has 613 laws....none of them pertain to those in the New Covenant with God.....that would be us. Now some Christians try to snip ten of the Laws out of the 613 Laws and obey them.....The Mosaic Laws is a body of Laws......snipping ten of them is changing them, much more than a "jot" Snipping ten and ignoring the rest is changing them....Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven.....this is one of the worst sins in the Old Covenant.

People think that they can fumble around with the Bible like a pin ball game....you hit something you just bounce off.....the problem with this thinking is that some of the things you hit in the Bible will bite your head off! This is one of them...If you are looking to the Law as a moral guide....you are severed from Christ and have fallen from grace! There is a fine line there and I do not recommend walking that line between Heaven and Hell.

It is best for Christians to leave the Mosaic Law alone. We do not need them, the teachings of Christ and the Apostles are far superior to anything in the Old Covenant.....the rudimentary morals expressed in the Mosaic Laws are better defined by Christ's commandments....’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. The bottom line.....following Moses does not provide salvation....following Christ does. The Mosaic Law never has pertained to Christians.

So what is the confusion all about? Christ mentioned some of the basic moral from the Mosaic Law in the Gospels.....that is no surprise.....people do not notice that Christ's ministry occurred in the Old Covenant.....the only Laws in effect during Christ's ministry were the Mosaic Laws.....so there is no surprise that He sighted the Mosaic Law.

( The only surprise is that in Mark 10:17-19 and Luke 18:18-20 it sounds like Christ is telling him that observing part of the "Ten Commandments" will get him eternal life. That has been debated for centuries.)

Then in James he mentions them and words it like this.....
8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. 9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder." If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker. James 2:8-11

You do not want to be part of system of laws where if you make one mistake you are done for good.

In the parable of the Rich man and Lazarus we have some unusual sceneries....as well as some challenges for those that are sola scriptura because it goes against some common beliefs.
1. I have already explained the issues with the words Hades and Hell in the scriptures. Hell cannot be in the scriptures because it is a more modern word 725 AD from the German/Anglo-Saxon with no Greek equivalent. Hades is a borrowed word from the Greek....Hades being a Greek god that reigned over "an underworld" of the same name. Gehenna was an illustration of the place of the fiery eternal punishment. The confusion for Christians is that this place of a fiery eternal punishment was never given its own name. They used illustrations and a borrowed Greek word. The Greek Hades was not a place of horrible torment...the descriptions varied. Probably the problem was the limitation of the languages of the time period. The Hebrew language did not have a word for a place of fiery eternal punishment and neither did the Greeks. The "Hebrews" did not believe in Hell or the devil. Much of the imagery for Hell comes from the Divine Comedy and Dante’s Inferno an Italian narrative poem by Dante Alighieri, begun c. 1308 and completed around 1321.
2. Lazarus ends up in Abraham's bosom, which would go along with the phrases in the Bible "gathered with their fathers" which would mean that Lazarus and Abraham were in Sheol. This would be normal as the story does not say that Lazarus and Abraham were in Heaven.
3. But where did the rich man end up? It is suggests he went to Hades.....was that the Greek Hades? What is the status of the place of the fiery eternal punishment? Did it exist at this point? Do people go straight there from dying? No Judgment Day?

4. The parable speaks of fire and torment.....and is says that... he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. OK So is this scenario such that people in this place of torment can see the people in Sheol and talk to them....Able to talk to them while standing in fire.

So the question I have, was this scenario actually something that could happen or is this a parable, a hypothetical scenario to teach a lesson? For the sola scriptura people they are kind of stuck and have to accept it as written, juggling what is said in this story with common beliefs. For me it a lesson taught by a hypothetical scenario.

The story of Lazarus and Rich Man is kind of like a can of worms as far as all the questions and contradictions it raises. Like the Transfiguration of Yeshua where he talks to Moses and Elijah. Was He talking to the dead? Some Christians do not like the idea of talking to the dead. Presumably they were in Sheol. Are we conscience after we die? Some Christians do not think so....the Bible refers to people "asleep" after they die. If Lazarus and the rich man could talk to each other....when we go to Heaven, are we going to be able to see and talk to our relatives in Hell? If the Apostles saw Moses and Elijah....did they have bodies? Do our souls look like our bodies?
Luke 16:19-31 – in this story, we see that the dead rich man is suffering but still feels compassion for his brothers and wants to warn them of his place of suffering. But there is no suffering in heaven or compassion in hell because compassion is a grace from God and those in hell are deprived from God’s graces for all eternity. So where is the rich man? He is in purgatory.

Phil. 2:10 – every knee bends to Jesus, in heaven, on earth, and “under the earth” which is the realm of the righteous dead, or purgatory.

2 Tim. 1:16-18 – Onesiphorus is dead but Paul asks for mercy on him “on that day.” Paul’s use of “that day” demonstrates its eschatological usage (see, for example, Rom. 2.5,16; 1 Cor. 1.8; 3.13; 5.5; 2 Cor. 1.14; Phil. 1.6,10; 2.16; 1 Thess. 5.2,4,5,8; 2 Thess. 2.2,3; 2 Tim. 4.8). Of course, there is no need for mercy in heaven, and there is no mercy given in hell. Where is Onesiphorus? He is in purgatory.

Heb. 12:14 – without holiness no one will see the Lord. We need final sanctification to attain true holiness before God, and this process occurs during our lives and, if not completed during our lives, in the transitional state of purgatory.

Heb. 12:23 – the spirits of just men who died in godliness are “made” perfect. They do not necessarily arrive perfect. They are made perfect after their death. But those in heaven are already perfect, and those in hell can no longer be made perfect. These spirits are in purgatory.

1 Peter 3:19; 4:6 – Jesus preached to the spirits in the “prison.” These are the righteous souls being purified for the beatific vision.

Rev. 21:4 – God shall wipe away their tears, and there will be no mourning or pain, but only after the coming of the new heaven and the passing away of the current heaven and earth. Note the elimination of tears and pain only occurs at the end of time. But there is no morning or pain in heaven, and God will not wipe away their tears in hell. These are the souls experiencing purgatory.

Rev. 21:27 – nothing unclean shall enter heaven. The word “unclean” comes from the Greek word “koinon” which refers to a spiritual corruption. Even the propensity to sin is spiritually corrupt, or considered unclean, and must be purified before entering heaven. It is amazing how many Protestants do not want to believe in purgatory. Purgatory exists because of the mercy of God. If there were no purgatory, this would also likely mean no salvation for most people. God is merciful indeed.

In the parable of the Rich man and Lazarus we have some unusual sceneries....as well as some challenges for those that are sola scriptura because it goes against some common beliefs.
The rich man has no business seeking intercession from Abraham, (say non-Catholics) so either Jesus is teaching a falsehood, or non-Catholics shift into automatic in condemning the doctrine by inventing new doctrines on the afterlife.

Gen. 50:10; Num. 20:29; Deut. 34:8 – here are some examples of ritual prayer and penitent mourning for the dead for specific periods of time. The Jewish understanding of these practices was that the prayers freed the souls from their painful state of purification, and expedited their journey to God.

Non-Catholic Christians have divorced themselves from our elder brothers, the Jews, the main reason I think purgatory is automatically rejected.

Let us find common ground with our Catholic brothers and sisters rather than reasons to quarrel with them. Better yet, maybe get on social media sites and share the good news of Jesus with the rest of the world.
That's a nice thought. However, Catholics set themselves (only) as the one true church and, instead of accepting and following God' word -- the Bible -- they follow the unScriptural teachings of their denomination.

When common ground over looks errors it aint common ground under Christ .
The problem with many today is their common ground seems to omit truth for sake of unity .
That wont bode well at all .
This healing the wound common ground stuff churches have been teaching aint coming FROM GOD .
Our common ground MUST BE CHRIST CENTERED , TRUTH CENTERED , not based on emotianilsm .
But on the biblical pattern set by CHRIST and those apostles .
Be on gaurd cause the next step in this common ground will be , lets just find common ground WITH ALL RELIGIONS .
OH WAIT THEY ALREADY DOING THAT TOO .

POSIT: The Hail Mary (a.k.a. Ave Maria) is a biblical prayer. God gave it to
us. It's in the Bible in black and white.

REPLY: According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the "Hail Mary" is not an
in-the-Bible prayer, rather, it's a developed prayer; and it was developed
over a number of years.

Here's the entire text of the so-called Hail Mary.

Hail [Mary] full of grace, the Lord is with thee,
blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb [Jesus].
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

"Hail, the Lord is with thee" was plagiarized from Gabriel's greeting at Luke
1:28 (Douay-Rheims version).

"[Mary] full of grace" is fabricated.

"blessed art thou amongst women" was plagiarized from Elizabeth's greeting
at Luke 1:42 (Douay-Rheims version).

"blessed is the fruit of thy womb" was also plagiarized from Elizabeth's
greeting at Luke 1:42 (Douay-Rheims version).

"Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our
death. Amen." is attributed to the intervention of one Ste. Peter Canisius for
its acceptance into the Catechism of the Council of Trent in the year 1566.

Obviously then, pieces and parts of the Hail Mary, in its official form, are
snipped from the Bible; but the body text of the prayer itself, is not actually
in the Bible; viz: instead of God-given, it's a man-made supplication
concocted from excerpts; with an ending invocation spun entirely from
imagination.

FAQ: What's wrong with using the Ave Maria for personal prayer?

REPLY: It's a scripted performance; as such it fails to comply with Heb 4:15-16,
which says:

"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our
weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet
without sin. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive
mercy and to find grace for timely help."

The Greek word for "confidently" means all out-spokenness, i.e. frankness,
bluntness, and/or candor.

Reciting the lines of a script is not what I call forthright, nor blunt, nor out
spoken, nor candid. It's actually not much different than reciting a Hindu
mantra or chanting the pages of a siddur like one of those Jews bobbing
back and forth like a car toy at the Wailing Wall. In tech-speak: the Hail
Mary is like one of those impersonal robo calls that infest our answering
machines; and we all know how annoying those detestable things can be.

NOTE: Heb 4:15-16 directs our attention to a male priest, whereas the Ava
Maria directs our attention to a female priestess, viz: another female
principal in the chorus of women akin to Aphrodite, Athena, Artemis, Iris,
Diana, Minerva, and Venus, etc.

You are entirely correct! The "Hail Mary" prayer is not based on Scripture! It is an invention of the Catholic denomination to glorify Mary, and is contrary to what the Bible says about a) prayer and b) Mary.

2 Timothy 2:16-17a, "But avoid profane chatter, because those occupied with it will stray further and further into ungodliness, and their message will spread its infection like gangrene."

Who is "them" you don't hate with stupid flaming zingers that have no substance,
or is "them", Chucky and Alex, proven liars by Protestant standards???

Then you should hate Alexander Hislop's teaching that the cross is a pagan Babylonian symbol, and must not be displayed anywhere. . Enouh 111 is a professed Hislopite, The "Christian Taliban" of America. Maybe you are too.
And you should hate the lies of millionaire Jack Chick, may God have mercy on his soul.

You keep asserting "false teachings" over and over again. If you are going to challenge Catholic teaching on any subject, a smart person would find out what the teaching really is that is allegedly false, and disprove it with scripture. You never do that. Trolling is not discussion, it's persecution.
Try asking questions instead of insulting headless chicken comments. I'd be happy to answer your questions. Here's a suggestion before you recklessly attack something:
Key in a word or topic in the box and click FIND. It's simple and easy.

The cross is a torture death device. Hislop is right. I doubt 100% Jesus who represents the God of Love would have a torture death device fronting his religion. Many false religions have forms of crosses as the front of their religion.
I hate all false religious teachings. 99% of all religion claiming to be christian isn't in reality-They fail this true mark 100%-1Cor 1:10--Unity of thought (all of Gods 1 truth) no division= 1 single religion.
Jesus warned that the false teachers would come in-Matt 13:24,27--Matt 13:37-39-- it started in Peters books. In Titus book he had to be left behind to correct false teachings. So its fact--false teachings get in. The wise correct the false teachings in front of the hearts of all creation. The rest laugh at them.

So you must be one of the wise, correct?

Of course, unity of religion means agreeing with you entirely, correct?

BTW, you need to keep reading further in 1 Corinthians 1. Here is verse 18, "For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God."

Let us find common ground with our Catholic brothers and sisters rather than reasons to quarrel with them.
Once again you are promoting a false notion. No one is "quarreling" with adherents of the Catholic Church. The "quarrel" is with every FALSE DOCTRINE AND PRACTICE promoted by the Vatican and the hierarchy of the church of Rome. Actually the Catholics themselves should be questioning everything taught by their church in the light of Scripture. But they have been conditioned to believe that what their "priests" tell them is Gospel truth (when it is the exact opposite). For example, the teaching of "sacramentalism" as necessary for salvation is not found in the New Testament. So there is no "common ground". It is an either/or situation.

A couple of things –
You are correct – Jesus came to FULFILL the Law, which is precisely what He did.

Only ONE of the Commandments would be affected by this fulfillment – the one pertaining to a shadow, the Sabbath. Other than the first two - ALL of the other Commandments are about behavior and morality.

The Sabbath is STILL observed – but on the Lord’s Day, as we see in the NT, Jesus having fulfilled it by His death and resurrection (Col. 2:16-17). As I stated before – if you don’t understand WHAT the Sabbath prefigured – then you won’t understand.
The FIRST mention of the Sabbath was in Exodus 16:23- and it was for MAN - and Manna. For 6 days that manna would fall from Heaven – with a double share on the 6th day because none would fall on the 7th day. On that day, they were to rest.

In the Bread of Life Discourse in John 6 - Jesus states explicitly that HE was the BREAD that came down from Heaven and compares Himself with the Manna that their forefathers ate.
Despite what SDAs claim - the Sabbath points FORWARD to Christ - NOT backwards to creation.

Finally - Christ’s Church cannot descend into apostasy – otherwise He is a
LIAR (Matt, 16:18).

Let us find common ground with our Catholic brothers and sisters rather than reasons to quarrel with them. Better yet, maybe get on social media sites and share the good news of Jesus with the rest of the world.
Is there any common ground?

From what I've seen they differ in almost every aspect. I do know there are some truly born again believers amongst Catholics and I don't understand how they can remain faithful to the Catholic church and also be faithful to Jesus and God's teaching in the bible.

I say this with a smile on my face.....humor is important....
Will you please make your point.
You got so involved with scriptures that cover various topic, that you actually did not convey your thoughts....lol
I clarified your confusion about the rich man and Abraham, who is obviously seeking his intercession. This is totally unacceptable to Protestants, yet Jesus is teaching it.

Because ALL Catholic doctrine is derived, directly or indirectly from scripture. We receive Apostolic teaching, developed, yet unchanged, whereas you have to reconstruct the divine message with every new denomination. Hence, you guys can't agree on much of anything.

OH WAIT THEY ALREADY DOING THAT TOO .
a) What is " emotianilsm"?
b) "Be on gaurd [sic] cause the next step in this common ground will be , lets just find common ground WITH ALL RELIGIONS .OH WAIT THEY ALREADY DOING THAT TOO " is just too absurd!!!

John 17:11, "I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them safe in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one."

John 17:20-21, " “I am not praying only on their behalf, but also on behalf of those who believe in me through their testimony that they will all be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I am in you. I pray that they will be in us, so that the world will believe that you sent me.

So who is right, Jesus Christ or you???

So you must be one of the wise, correct?

Of course, unity of religion means agreeing with you entirely, correct?

BTW, you need to keep reading further in 1 Corinthians 1. Here is verse 18, "For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God."
The Greek word stauros, did not have cross as one of its meanings back in the 1960,s. It was a pole or tree. Cross was added later.

The cross is a torture death device. Hislop is right.
Then why do many Protestants list Hislops' multiple falsehoods??? Most of the information debunking Hislop's lunacies are from Protestant sources. I could flood the thread with pages and pages exposing his con job, but since it doesn't fit on a T shirt, you would never read it.

I'd encourage you to be cautious of Hislopites on the forum. You will know them because they will refer to Roman Catholicism in the context of Nimrod and Semiramis worship. Like I said, Hislop's work has been discredited and it is ridiculous. It is also condemning of much of Protestantism, as some of his comments applied to Protestant practices.
So, using his reasoning basically condemns yourself if you are a Protestant.

As Hislop's sloppy scholarship and poor methodology of proving his case is much more evident today, it would be safe to say that few would believe it in today's mindset. It remains as a testimony of just how little we have changed as a society and how men think in any given time in history. The sad fact does remain that there are some who believe the work is truth, and the general argument of his suppositious conspiracy theories are still alive and well in some fundamentalist Protestant mindsets today. This is due solely to ignorance, which is actually an unacceptable excuse today, given the available information we have at any given time. It is not strange that most, if not all of those who hate or distrust the Church always know nothing about Her and the little they do "know" is so filled with error it is amazing that it could happen today.

100 more links and videos won't make a difference to a true Hislopite. Hislop's absurdities is the basis for all of you and @Enoch111's uncharitable anti-Catholic, anti-Protestant venom.

Inserting different topics with every post to scramble the thread is not a reasonable way to discuss anything.

Every translation that I checked except for one -- the Orthodox Jewish Bible -- has the word "cross", so I don't see how your statement as correct. Even the 1599 Geneva Bible has "cross", not "tree".
