There were times in the Old Testament when some of the prophets, and perhaps the people of the time would fast. Fast normally meant abstaining from food, and going without drink for a certain amount of time, and for a stated purpose.
Here a comment from Moses himself, about the time when he was with Yahava on the mountain, for forty days and forty nights, and during this time he ate no bread and drank no water. As Yahava wrote out the terms of the covenant, which was the Ten Commandments.
What was the purpose of this fasting? Perhaps to pay close attention to Yahava, and to learn of these commandments which were being created at the time? Not sure, other than this is one of the first accounts of fasting itself.
Another example of fasting here in 1 Samuel, when people gathered at Mizpah, and Samuel became Israel's judge. They went without food all day, (it doesn't say they had nothing to drink here), and confessed they had sinned against Yahava.
There is two examples from the old testament, of fasting, and let's go fast forward to Jesus and his temptation with Satan.
While Jesus could have wrestled around because of his hunger, he made the decision to stay true to his Father, and not fall into the temptations of the lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh (the thoughts with-in), and Yeshua showed the importance in relying on the written word here, and states to Satan, "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but every word of God.'"
In the face of this temptation, Yeshua relies on the written word, 600 years, or more before his coming. Amazing.
You know how rockstars sell there souls to the devil supposedly today - perhaps mainly the darkness of themselves (in my opinion with the Devil being taken care of today). The devil makes a statement as though he owns all of the kingdoms here, that are being presented. Jesus never says that he does not have that authority, and therefore it could be concluded that Satan at this time did own the world, or had the title deed, however you may think differently.
This is in step with the holy spirit, and not giving in to temptation to the dark, and malice, intentions of the other, as with Yeshua if he was to fail his Father, he would have probably felt a lot of shame and guilt, and sometimes we has human beings when we flub up and mess up, we do feel shame and guilt - however God is good and he will pick us back up if we allow him to work with us in our hearts and minds. And choose to serve Him.
Exodus 34
27 Then the Yahava said to Moses, “Write down all these instructions, for they represent the terms of the covenant I am making with you and with Israel.”
28 Moses remained there on the mountain with Yahava forty days and forty nights. In all that time he ate no bread and drank no water. And Yahava wrote the terms of the covenant—the Ten Commandments[i]—on the stone tablets.

1 Samuel 7:6
6 So they gathered at Mizpah and, in a great ceremony, drew water from a well and poured it out before the Lord. They also went without food all day and confessed that they had sinned against Yahava. (It was at Mizpah that Samuel became Israel’s judge.)

When Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit, on his return from the Jordan river after being baptized by John, the Spirit led him into the wilderness.Luke 4
New King James Version
Satan Tempts Jesus
4 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit [a]into the wilderness,
The devil, came to Jesus after forty days and forty nights. Being human, and of the nature of his brother, the nature of me and you, human beings. We get hungry after going a few hours without eating. Jesus here ate nothing, but it did not say he did not have no drink. Could you imagine how hungry after 40 days? Then here comes the devil (today someone whom may be adversity - or even the thoughts with-in yourself that can cause adversity from the darkness of ourselves and temptations), to tempt Jesus.2 being [b]tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
Knowing that Jesus was hungry here from his fasting, the devil comes up and says "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." Man... What a temptation! Imagine being so hungry, being the Son of God, that it could be possible to make a stone into bread to eat. However, Jesus was prepared even though he would have been tempted from here by the Devil, what happens next?3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
Yeshua knowing the Old Testament quotes, Deuteronomy 8: 3 So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord. from Moses.
4 But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, [c]but by every word of God.’ ”

After this, the devil then took him up on a high mountain, and showed Him all the Kingdom of the world in a moment of time. Some would suggest that this would include america, or washington state, however the kingdoms of the world at this time were the nations surrounding Israel, which the devil is now showing him at this moment of time.
5 [d]Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
The devil said to Jesus, again tempting him in his weakened state of the flesh, "All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give to whomever I wish.6 And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.

The devil makes a statement as though he owns all of the kingdoms here, that are being presented. Jesus never says that he does not have that authority, and therefore it could be concluded that Satan at this time did own the world, or had the title deed, however you may think differently.
The devil also said, tempting him, Yeshua, in his weakend state of the flesh, Therefore because of owning all of these Kingdoms around here, if you just bend your knee, all of this will be yours. What a scary statement to think about, all you would have to do is bow your knee and you could have all the riches of the world. Do you see the temptations that come by and through the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life?7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”
Yeshua, in tune with the holy spirit, told Satan to get behind him, and again goes back to the written word, ' You shall worship the LORD your God and Him only shall you serve.'
Now this is a trick, to put on a show, like a badgering bully who says, do it or your not my friend. However at the top of the temple, in Jerusalem, Satan tries again to tempt Jesus, in saying "IF you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here." Make a spectacle of yourself and show you are from God, if you are the Son of God.
9 Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.
