Who managed to quit smoking?

Both my parents were heavy smokers and I made up my mind as a child that I would never smoke.

Your mom did, too, then. I think World War One and World War Two had a lot to do with women smoking; before then women didn't used to smoke nearly as much, it seems.

Well, better if it's not done at all, but better also for women and men to smoke with confidence rather than do it hidden, as if it's something forbidden. I guess your mom might have in those day laboured under the impression that she was only supposed to do it hidden? (Strange how customs have changed, anyway.)

She always had cigarettes in he apron pocket. It was just part of who she was and smoking was not taboo back then.

Yes, I guess carrying a pack was a bit like carrying lipstick in one's handbag; simply part of who the user was as a person. (Some young ppl who say that they are against smoking - though maybe good for them! - don't really understand that; that it was something one did so naturally.)

Maybe your mom didn't even talk about her smoking but just did it naturally, too; having acquired the custom before you first remember her.

My husband gave up smoking for vaping 13 years ago and is now on the lowest level of nicotine and plans to go nicotine free very soon.

@Pearl I don't think young people with their keen ideas (bless them) should ignore the way things were in the past, when it was just so natural to smoke; ppl did it without thinking, without anyone batting an eyelid, so to speak.

Young people don't seem so hooked on smoking as they used to when it was 'cool' but in the UK alcohol is a big problem and obesity. Back in the day people in general were ashamed to get drunk now it is perfectly acceptable.

Well yes, that's what vaping is all about, getting the nicotine without all the other nasties in cigs.

I don't see that for them to "moralize" against someone having an occasional cigarette is somehow appropriate if then they indulge in all sorts of other harmful things.

It was just what people did. I never thought it was wrong until they started talking about the health risks.

Yes, exactly; ppl carried packs all the time, and at work coffee break, after meals, out it came, with hardly any consciousness even by other people.
