[1Corinthians 1:11-12 KJV] 11 For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them [which are of the house] of C
e, that there are contentions among you. 12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
The contentions in the church were caused by some of the members. What was the basis for these contentions?
[1Corinthians 1:13-15 KJV] 13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; 15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
The contentions centered on water baptisms. The members contentions originated upon who had authority. Whoever one was baptized by, determined who was to be followed and who had authority.
[1Corinthians 4:6 KJV] 6 And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and [to] Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think [of men] above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another.
The authority they were to follow was not to be based on who baptized them, but who God set in place.
[1Corinthians 4:16 KJV] 16 Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.
Paul was exhorting the members to adhere to his authority.
