Who were the Kenites and exactly how many people went on the ark?
The Kenites were a tribe (apparently nomadic) who, in contrast to the Amalekites, treated the Israelites well when they came out of Egypt.'Saul went to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the ravine. Then he said to the Kenites , "Go away, leave the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you along with them; for you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt." So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites.' 1 Sam 15:5-6 NIVKenites were apparently sympathetic to the Israelites more generally. Jethro, Moses' helpful father-in-law was a Kenite (he is also described as a Midianite). Also:'Most blessed of women be Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, most blessed of tent-dwelling women.' Judg 5:24 NIVThere were eight people in the ark: Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, his wife and the wives of his three sons. (Many consider this story to be allegory, of course.)

Heber and Jethro both lived in the land of the Kenites but were not Kenites. A Kenite is a decendent of Cain. From the Strongs Hebrew dictionaryH7014קיןqayinkah'-yinThe same as H7013 (with a play upon the affinity to H7069); Kajin, the name of the first child, also of a place in Palestine, and of an Oriental tribe: - Cain, Kenite (-s).

KE'NITES (ke'nits; "pertaining to copper-smiths"). A group of metalsmiths who traveled throughout the mineral-bearing region in the Wadi Arabah. They are first mentioned in Gen 15:19 as one of the nations to be "given" to Israel. They descended from the Midianites and developed extraordinary skill in metalwork. They settled down early along the SW shore of the Dead Sea, SE of Hebron (Judg 1:16). Hobab, the son of Reuel, was a Kenite and acted as a guide to Israel in the wilderness (1:16; 4:11). Their nomadism is suggested in the OT by numerous individual Kenites described as living in various places. Besides their residence SE of Hebron, they were found in the Wadi Arabah (Num 24:21), in Naphtali (Judg 4:11) and in the Davidic-Solomonic era they are mentioned in southern Judah (1 Sam 15:6; 27:10). Heber, mentioned in Judg 4:11 and 5:24, was a Kenite, and the ascetic Rechabites mentioned in 1 Chron 2:55 were also of Kenite extraction. New Unger's Bible Dictionary.

My answers in blue- KarenKE'NITES (ke'nits; "pertaining to copper-smiths").(Gen 4:22 ( Sons of Cain ) And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.) A group of metalsmiths who traveled throughout the mineral-bearing region in the Wadi Arabah. They are first mentioned in Gen 15:19 as one of the nations to be "given" to Israel. They descended from the Midianites and developed extraordinary skill in metalwork.Kenites were in existance way before the Midianites.......Gen 15:18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: Gen 15:19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,( from Smith's Bible dictionary .....MidianMid'ian. (strife). A son of Abraham and Keturah, Gen_25:2; 1Ch_1:32, progenitor of the Midianites, or Arabians, dwelling principally in the desert, north of the peninsula of Arabia. Southward, they extended along the eastern shore of the Gulf of Eyleh (Sinus Aelaniticus); and northward, they stretched along the eastern frontier of Palestine. The "land of Midian," the place to which Moses fled after having killed the Egyptian, Exo_2:15; Exo_2:21, or the portion of it, specially referred to, was probably the peninsula of Sinai.Gen 25:1 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah. Gen 25:2 And she bore him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah. They settled down early along the SW shore of the Dead Sea, SE of Hebron (Judg 1:16). Hobab, the son of Reuel, was a Kenite and acted as a guide to Israel in the wilderness (1:16; 4:11).Num 10:29 And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said, I will give it you come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel. Exo 2:15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well. Exo 2:16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.Exo 2:17 And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock. Exo 2:18 And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to day?Exo 2:19 And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.Exo 2:20 And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.Exo 2:21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter. Gen 4:20 ( Son's of Cain) And Adah bore Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle. The shepherds were Kenites living in the land of Midian that is why they drove the daughters of the priest of Midian away from the well everyday. Here Moses is called an Egyptian because he had lived in the land of Egypt, but he was not an Egyption he was an Israelite. Kenites are not Midianites they were just living in the land of Midian. Their nomadism is suggested in the OT by numerous individual Kenites described as living in various places.(God speaking to Cain Gen 4:12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.) Besides their residence SE of Hebron, they were found in the Wadi Arabah (Num 24:21), in Naphtali (Judg 4:11) and in the Davidic-Solomonic era they are mentioned in southern Judah (1 Sam 15:6; 27:10). Heber, mentioned in Judg 4:11 and 5:24, was a Kenite,Jdg 4:11 Now Heber the Kenite, which was of the children of Hobab the father in law of Moses, had severed himself from the Kenites, and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh. and the ascetic Rechabites mentioned in 1 Chron 2:55 were also of Kenite extraction.New Unger's Bible Dictionary. I agree and they mixed themselves with a lot of groups..1Ch 2:55 And the families of the scribes which dwelt at Jabez; the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and Suchathites. These are the Kenites that came of Hemath, the father of the house of Rechab. The Kenites mixed in with Israel. from Smith'sGibeonGib'eon. (hill city). One of the four cities of the Hivites, the inhabitants of which made a league with Joshua, Jos_9:3-15, and thus, escaped the fate of Jericho and Ai. Compare Jos_11:19. Gibeon lay within the territory of Benjamin, Jos_18:25, and with its "suburbs," was allotted to the priests, Jos_21:17, of whom it became afterwards, a principal station. It retains its ancient name almost intact, el-Jib. Its distance from Jerusalem by the main road is about 6 1/2 miles; but there is a more direct road reducing it to five miles.2Sa 21:1 Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.2Sa 21:2 And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)2Sa 21:3 Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the LORD? 2Sa 21:4 And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you.2Sa 21:5 And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts of Israel,2Sa 21:6 Let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto the LORD in Gibeah of Saul, whom the LORD did choose. And the king said, I will give them.Gen 4:15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
