Why did Paul choose Philippi as the start of his European ministry?

  • Philippi was a Roman colony with all the privileges of Roman citizenship.
  • It was the principal city of the region and a center of pagan worship.
  • Witnessing in Philippi was the closest thing to witnessing in Rome without being there.
  • Paul’s general plan was to start churches in the major cities, knowing it was easier for the Gospel to spread outward rather than into these cities.
