Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
There could be alot of time spent on a word study of being BORN again and rightly DIVIDING or DIVIDING asunder. You really cannot separate the two words, because you need both to understand each other, such as; rightly dividing allows you to see into scripture properly and ultimately understand the birthing. Everything is brought about by a birthing, God literally birthing His own children with the help of no one else. The birthing allows you to see in scripture that it must be properly divided or it will make no sense.
A good rule for an on going believer to check themselves is if you are still saying "oh we see through a glass darkly, we just don't know" that copout is you saying I don't understand yet. Perhaps you have never rightly divided or you are still having a problem with dividing soul and spirit. It's ok to not be able to do either, we are not born again with that knowledge. The knowledge must come to you in time. That is spiritual growth, mind renewal, learning Christ and how to read and understand your bible.
Your whole bible has everything to do with Christ, now we can take a part of your bible and pinpoint where it is divided directly to you, that is where you want to get your information. It is the word of truth the HolySpirit will use for you. Can you get that? Example; if you try to apply what God said and did with say Abraham or maybe Moses, what you end up with is confusion. Why? Because God is not speaking to you, he was dealing with an earthly people for that time generation, they were not born again and God handled them totally different than he does his own offspring. We get so caught up in the mystic and miracles we start trying to live it and apply what absulutely does not belong to us.
What we can do is use it for life application, but there is no life in it, for us "life is in the Son." There it is, look closely, the scripture says life is IN the Son only. Look at the words IN and SON, you cannot get any clearer than the written word, if you are IN the SON you have life. When I read the Psalms or Proverbs I get a blessing and you can use what is said in dailey living but there is no life in them for you because "life is IN the Son only. Your wisdom is Christ, you can look at a proverb and see his wisdom and maybe apply it because it is written, but your life and wisdom will always be Christ.
