'And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world,
according to the prince of the power of the air,
the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh,
fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind;
and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.'
(Ephesians 2:1-3)
'This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord,
that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk,
in the vanity of their mind,
Having the understanding darkened,
being alienated from the life of God
through the ignorance that is in them,
because of the blindness of their heart: ... '
(Ephesians 4:17-18)
Hello there,
These two passages of Scripture among others have been convicting me, and causing me to take stock. For during this year of shutdowns, when we have been confined to our homes because of the Corona virus, I have been spending more time watching television drama series, films and documentaries. Reading works of fiction, as well as the knitting and crochet which I enjoy doing in my spare time.
The desires of the flesh and of the mind, do not consist only of the gross lust of the flesh which are obvious and easy to identify, but the more refined and subtle lusts which come under the heading of the vanity of the mind. There are those who make a distinction between classical music, the opera, and such artistic accomplishments, from those pursuits such as rock music that it is deemed pander to the grosser lusts of the flesh, which excite, and bring into the mind thoughts which can lead to actions which are inappropriate for the believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. Also in regard to classical writings and works of fiction.
I would appreciate your thoughts regarding these two scriptures and your understanding as to what is 'the vanity of the mind', and 'the desires of the flesh and of the mind' that we are to avoid, as those who have been awakened to the truth that is in Christ Jesus.
Our lives are so short, and the word of God so rich and full, that if we were to spend the time we have in applying our mind to it's study, we would not plumb the entirety of it's depths. Are we wasting our precious time on things that will not profit us?
Thank you
Within the love of Christ our Saviour,
Our Lord and Head.
