(If, of course, the church and Israel are not considered distinct, then I can see how ppl might struggle more with the idea that it is the restraining influence of the Holy Spirit that is taken away.)

You are correct in one aspect ViJ, that the "one to come" is a delusion, a distraction from the one already present. But you are spiritualizing too much. Daniel, Revelation, Paul and John did speak of one specific real life physical entity that would come after them and deceive the world. This wasn't a spiritual attitude or a mere individual, but putting the pieces together one can understand it as first, a political and religious power, headed by a succession of individuals and ruling over a very long period of time. There are other details that can be gleaned from the prophecies, but the aforementioned provides a sound foundation to accurately identify the entity. Remember. Daniel 2 statue. Kingdoms, even empires are revealed there. From Daniels time to the second coming. We are focusing on this thread upon the fourth beast, Pagan Rome, and what came immediately afterwards, that specific power Paul was warning the Thessalonians about. Bear in mind that Paul was talking to actual bishops of the fledgling church when he said, "from your own selves shall arise men speaking perverse things, to draw disciples after them." So we cannot trust the writings of every early church father. We must discern between those who wrote truth, and those who were becoming apostate by introducing pagan ideas and forms into the church. Remember also, Paul said that this "falling away", this divorce from the truth and from Christ, would start immediately after his death. So we aren't talking about today. But it would last until today, because that apostasy would be destroyed at the second coming. There were other church leaders who understood the words of Paul in similar vein as Tertullian. However, understand this. The apostate power, the little horn Antichrist did not stand by and allow anyone to just write against the established nominal church at will. The true believers began to be viciously persecuted, and everything they write destroyed. That is another factor in the long bloody saga of the rise of this "man of sin".
But the reformers knew who it was. They may have disagreed on some details of doctrine, but the identity of the Antichrist they all agreed on. Such a pity that the church today rejects the very basis and foundation of the reformation and what the Protestant reformation was built on.

Yes. And that secret was the rise of empires culminating in a religio-political power that would deceive the whole world. A pet that would embrace and practice the dark arts in order to deceive the whole world, while at the same time disguising itself as a godly edifice. It is a mix of truth and error.
