Jesus told us we have to be perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect. Was he wrong?

That is YOUR interpretation of what He said. YOU... are wrong. That because you think we can be our OWN Christ, which is an occult teaching.

So why have you come here to toy with Christians with your ignorant absolutism?

You mean you don't know if I refuse to believe your claim that we can actually be perfect like Jesus, and without sin?

I DO... refuse to believe that, because in the Matthew 5:48 verse, Jesus is commanding us to be perfect as our Father in Heaven, but He didn't say that was possible.

He sort of did…
With men it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.
The question to me is, since I obviously haven’t seen it happen yet that I am perfect, will I insist it isn’t possible or will I believe God can do it?

Maybe I am not yet ready to bear it.

I’m just quoting Jesus:

You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:48 RSV

Bob, I think what little I have seen of your posts the last few days that you are a simple man, which is refreshing, and that I’ve yet to see you trade an insult for an insult, which has become rare to see!

I'm going to repost something I wrote for the "Repentance" thread.

God promised we will be perfect:

Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. (1 John 3:2)

Of course, we might have to go through death and resurrection like Jesus first.

People, the Bible exhorts us to prepare ourselves for His return by practicing being like Him in avoiding sinful thought, word, and deed; and in loving one another. This is an art we practice, not a goal we need to achieve in this lifetime.

If we remember this principle, we might be a little less uptight about our sin, a little less judgmental of others, and a little more sane.

That is very interesting, and to add to it. The art that is practiced is allowing God through Christ Jesus to come through our lives by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:1-5) and the spirit of Christ (Romans 8:1-10) abiding in faith, and hope. The greatest of course being love (1 Corinthians 13:13).

You can't blot out the two great commandments.

I know I can’t.....Jesus did....take it up with Him....ThoseCommandments were Given like all of the other 613 commandments....to show that you can’t keep them and you are in dire need of a Savior and His Grace....

You may think you're helping those who have been misled by Christian extremist groups, but you're not helping anybody if you tell them it's ok to sin, certainly not if you lead them to believe they can live in habitual sin, or sinful lifestyles.

As always, the standard Lie rears its ugly head......nobody is saying that it is “OK to sin” .....shame on you for inferring that is my message....
Sinning is NEVER OK......as Believers we are “ New Creations” with “New Hearts” and sin will eventually have the same appeal as slicing off your lips with a razor......
Enlightened Believers realize that they still sin as long as they are in a flesh body.....What do we do when we sin?How about doing the same thing with our sin that God does ? Put it on the Cross. Then leave it there. We should BOLDLY approach the Throne Of Grace and find our Forgiveness and Mercy there and thank God for His Grace.....
This in no way excuses sin and if you think that you are going to “ sin and get away with it” you are seriously deceived—— God will chastise you here on Earth for your sins and you will know BIG - TIME chastisement if you think you can take advantage of Grace.....God ain’t gonna be mocked...

When your supposed “ Good News” actually contains no good news for those that struggle with Sin, as we ALL do , its probably a false gospel.......you can have it.....

Exactly and that's what I've been trying to say about those who live in habitual sin like the homosexuals who don't repent and don't remain celibate and are being embraced by new age liberal hippy Christians, with rainbow flags on their houses and so called fake Churches.

Yet every time I mention this my posts get deleted, so the mods deleting my posts must be accepting of this filth.

We on a Christian forum should be allowed to voice our opinion that is in acceptance with God’s word which it states in the book of Leviticus, if we are not allowed to express our feelings concerning this vile sin, then we are no better than the sinners and those who oppose God, like the current Satanic World system.

God does not want us to be accepting of those who intentionally keep committing the same heinous sin over and over again and knowing it's against God's word.

You are right. To a certain point. AFTER that point where you understand the purpose is to cry out to God because you are poor and not good and in great need, He does not mean for you to stop asking for whatever you see you lack.

Remember the man who said, what must I do to be saved? Jesus answered him from the tablet that deals with righteousness - loving your neighbor as much as you love yourself. Then He said, and if you want to be perfect, sell all you have and follow Me. That was concerning the second tablet - which is to love God more than you love yourself and your neighbor. And you are right that with men it is not possible, but to move on, you must see with God all things are possible.

But first, He answered the mans question, which was, what must I do to be saved? And Jesus gave him the answer. Righteousness is the…bare minimum. God makes a place for righteous men.

The second thing He said to the man had to do with the tablet that concerns holiness.

With men it is not possible but with God all things are possible.

some men say they are both righteous and holy and they are neither.
Some men are righteous but think they are not.
Some men God moves on to perfection. I don’t think it’s 24/7…but I don’t know because it’s above my head.

I am not perfect but have repented for the many sins I’ve committed and they are many, but I try not to commit the same sin over and over again and some sins are greater than others especially those that are an abomination to God Almighty and our Savior Jesus Christ.

So those who want to go with the mainstream and are in acceptance of those who commit vile filthy sins or are afraid of being persecuted for speaking the truth as God would want us too, then you are in the same boat as those who commit the sin because you accept it and are therefore in league with Satan as are most Churches who accept this garbage and most do it for monetary gain, the more members the more money.

I will always speak the truth and aspire to be like my Lord Christ, and that doesn’t mean accept all and love all who keep committing atrocious sin after sin, without repentance or abstinence.

Then you are a habitual offender in the eyes of God and will never achieve perfection only eternal damnation.

It is still that we can only... be 'counted'... perfect while in Christ. To actually be perfect like Jesus is to claim we are our own Christ. That's important to distinguish because Paul said we all fall short of the glory of God. Why? Because of sin in our flesh.

Christ in you, the hope of glory. You abiding/remaining in Him….limitless possibilities!
Run the race to win. If you stumble and don’t remain/abide in Him in trust, get up and begin running again, because though a righteous man stumbles in his trust/faith 7 times, he will get up again.

No, actually you are quoting a revised Bible version.

And the meaning of perfect is in the mental, moral sense, not that we can ever be free of sin while in this flesh.

NT:5046
teleios (tel'-i-os); from NT:5056; complete (in various applications of labor, growth, mental and moral character, etc.); neuter (as noun, with NT:3588) completeness:

KJV - of full age, man, perfect.
(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006, 2010 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

The idea is 'to be mature'.

I recall what Apostle Paul said about us in the flesh. So instead of opinion, let's understand what Apostle Paul declared below...

Rom 7:12-25
12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.

16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
KJV

Yes, that is what we are to do, and that takes maturity in Christ to do that. The reason why is because only those who are mature in Christ will look at their acts to see if they are in line with God's commandments, and repent to Christ if they discover they weren't. The immature won't check theirselves, and those on the false OSAS doctrines, those won't even repent and ask Jesus forgiveness because they're told they cannot sin anymore.

Keep working it out! That book is a progression.

There are a handful of commandments besides the two great ones. These help define the two great ones. For instance, the Lord taught us not to commit adultery. This helps define love.
