That' must be a good family memory. Would it have been a very young Princess Elizabeth who was a driver and mechanic in the ATS during the war or her mother Queen Elizabeth?

I have done my family genealogy for years and that was a good find. Yes she was a mechanic, and have a bit of background on her. In her younger days she did like to drive and spend time on one of estates being free roam out and about in her vehicle, pants, no make, dogs, I presume to have some normalcy.

I was just curious as to how they change them over from The Queen to the king, usually when bank notes change they give a date when they are no longer legal tender, so you exchange them. I wondered if that suddenly happens because we have a king or whether they have both new and old in circulation at the same time x
In Australia we will get King Charles III on our coins etc from the start of 2023 in fact, no 2022 will be made with the King on such.

She always drove herself around the royal estates especially Balmoral Castle in the Highlands of Scotland and liked to go fast. When one of Saudi royals visited Balmoral and was offered a tour of the estate he was very surprised to be driven by the Queen herself almost as a nudge to the fact that Saudi women weren't allowed to drive.

The young Princess Elizabeth chats to US bomber crews in England during WW2 at the naming of a B-17 'Rose of York' in her honour-

Just realised that you may not be aware that we have the reigning monarch on all our currency xx
@Rita I think for folk on the thread it's good to remember that in the UK the monarch occupies the position more or less that the flag has in the US.

The Queen did feature on some of the Canadian banknotes (so did William Lyon Mackenzie King)....

Not sure what you mean by that @farouk . Our Queen meant so much more to us than a flag would she was a warm, witty, compassionate and dignified lady. Could you say that about a flag?

I don’t think he was comparing the Queen to a flag, but more the place of importance they both have in each country.

Oh yes, very true.

What I was referring to was that in the US the people expect the President to have a lot of political opinions and fight for them and then the President will be either reelected or not, as the case may be.

Whereas to Americans the Stars and Stripes are a constant symbol.

@Rita Yes, more or less, indeed. In the UK, ppl generally avoid criticizing the monarch. Just as in the US it's customary not to criticize the flag. The monarch in the UK and the flag in the US are each seen more as the guarantor of almost everything else.

As is our Union Jack which is made up of the flags of the four nations that make up the United Kingdom.

On the new coins the King will face to the left instead of the right according to tradition.
@Pearl Yes, it is supposed to alternate, left or right on coins, from one monarch to another. (I think I read that Edward VIII wanted his face to be facing in the same direction as King George V, so they obliged....but then he didn't last very long as monarch, right?)

I didn't even know they minted coins with his image.

I think they were minted but not sure they had much of a chance to circulate them because he was out before the end of the year in 1936.
I've never seen one, they must be so rare that only collectors have them. Coins from as far back as Victoria were all still in circulation until the advent of the decimal system.
