Then why did Jesus command His disciple's to pick up and carry their own cross?
What is your cross for if it is not meant for you to sacrifice yourself on it?
Did he tell them to carry it around for looks?

He told them they would all die. Most of them were martyred. They were beaten, jailed, stoned to death ... Didn't Peter ask to be hung on a cross upside down?
Physically we all suffer and die, to the glory of God. We run the race, carry our cross (persecutions of the world in the name of Christ). And we endure all sufferings knowing that our redemption draws near and so rejoice. Spiritually we are forgiven.

What did Jesus mean by saying pick up your cross and follow me? They knew what the cross represented during the Roman rule. It meant shame and death, suffering. So He told the disciples if you are going to follow me, this is what you can expect. We don't literally experience that kind of persecution, but some do. I personally receive mild persecution for being a Christian.
But frankly, if the time comes and an Islamic terrorist confronts me and threatens to chop my head off unless I convert to Islam and denounce Jesus, then my faith will be tested. I will have to ask him if I can sharpen the blade to make a quick and clean cut!

The majority of John 14 is speaking to Christians.
Vs. 5, Thomas asks a question, vs. 6 Jesus answers him but the message is also to the rest of us.
Vs. 8 Philip asks a question, Jesus answers him and the message goes out to all.
Vs. 22 Judas asks a question.
Vs. 23-31 is a message to all.

No it is not. There were no Christians till the book of acts.

The Apostle John (being inspired by the Holy Spirit) wrote that book. Jesus was speaking to the Disciples, who were followers, believers, Christians ( a term that came much later). The message goes also out to the world as part of the gospel. Yes the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, but that does not nullify who they already were, He just empowered and equipped them for their missions.

Because of the grace of the one and only Father God, he created his own human seed, his Son's spirit, not of the evil one, of the will of any man. It is for me and anyone else to believe in and grow into. The natural spiritual father of all from birth can now be replaced by our heavenly Father because of faith in the gospel; and Yahshua, his seed, it's the core. So today I not only possess the spirit of his son, I then also possess the presence of the Father God as he is in the seed (bosom) or the son's spirit.

Gal 1:15-16a; Rom 8:16, 16:25; Col 1:27..The mystery or secret of the Father God was finally revealed and experienced by who would then believe. After his Son's death on the Cross and his resurrection to his ascension into heaven, the gateway was open to new life immortal, for all those true believers who now have this seed of the spirit of his Son within them. And again, as this seed is embedded in the Father, so I also possess him, possess both the son and the father.

And I know and have experienced 'things' because of my Father God in heaven, real life experiences that the spirit of world does not understand and can only be of the Father. It has made me a more humble and a very hopeful person for the next new life, and this spiritual journey has not ended yet.
