Pagan tongues was not the case in chapter 14, anywhere, nor now that they were Christians. And in chapter one, Paul praises them saying "you come short in no gift." 4 I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus, 5 that you were enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge, 6 even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you, 7 so that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 who will also confirm you to the end, that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

You are half right about tongues not being a stand alone gift. The sign of tongues IS a stand alone manifestation. The gift of diverse kinds of tongues, must have interpretation. You honestly are not aware of the difference???

Isaiah 8:19 is evidence of supernatural tongues in the occult that is just gibberish nonsense as existing before that day of Pentecost. No way will God imitate that kind of tongue.

You can look all over the internet for ecstatic tongues found in heathen religion, the occult, & cults in christianity. The only way you can prove you have the actual real God's gift of tongues is when it is of other men's lips to speak unto the people which is why it will come with interpretation when used in the assembly.

This is why the apostle John warned believers not to believe every spirit but test them in 1 John 4:1-4 because believers can have spirits fall on them bringing even supernatural tongues that speaks the way the world speaks as he said so in 1 John 4:5-6.

Most tongue speakers today will testify in getting that tongue by the sensation of feeling what they believe was the Holy Spirit falling on them as apart from salvation like happening later on in their lives as a believer from when they were saved. Some will change the testimony as to when they were saved to that moment. That is not how you get any other gifts of the Spirit and so why identify with the way the world receives spirits and that kind of tongue? If we are to prove all things and abstain from all appearances of evil, God cannot have His gift of tongues as speaking unto the people to be like the devil's tongue as found in the world.

I suspect strongly that the one world religion that will arise out of the great tribulation will use tongues to unify all religions and pagans under one roof.

We've talked about this before. What you may call "g....ish, which is a very derogatory word to apply to a gift of God, leaning towards blasphemy, may be just a case of a legitimate language you just think sounds like your dirty word, and go so far to claim it is demonic.

And some who really have a gift of tongues from God might disagree with you. Do you have a gift of tongues from God? I have been speaking in tongues in prayer since 1976. What do you know of me or of my gift from God?

That is not how you get any other gifts of the Spirit and so why identify with the way the world receives spirits and that kind of tongue?
How does a person receive the gifts of the Spirit as you understand it?

If we are to prove all things and abstain from all appearances of evil, God cannot have His gift of tongues as speaking unto the people to be like the devil's tongue as found in the world.
Every time a person curses God, does he not speak in a devil's tongue? When he blesses God what is the difference?

"But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?" James 3:8-11

Who is it that is able to tame man's tongue?

I suspect strongly that the one world religion that will arise out of the great tribulation will use tongues to unify all religions and pagans under one roof.
Your suspicions would be highly suspect considering your apparent lack of personal experience with tongue talking groups of believers. If you disagree with one person you might be correct, but when you condemn the whole out of hand, what would or should you expect from God?

"For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" Matt 7:2-3

That you did not test the spirits but believed that was the Holy Spirit that came over you bringing that tongue which never comes with interpretation and so you assume it is a prayer language of the Holy Spirit when it is not.

How does a person receive the gifts of the Spirit as you understand it?

Not by seeking to receive the Holy Spirit apart from salvation. Don't you find it ironic that none of the other gifts are sought in that way by seeking to receive the Holy Spirit apart from salvation, but just tongues which never comes with interpretation?

Every time a person curses God, does he not speak in a devil's tongue? When he blesses God what is the difference?

God's gift of tongues is of other men's lips to speak unto the people in the mission field that it will come with interpretation in the assembly; it is not for private use just because that tongue comes with no interpretation which should prove it is not God's gift of tongues.

"But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

How is that relevant or is this another way that you as a tongue seeker condemn those who do not speak in tongues? People who speak in tongues curse and cuss the same as anybody else does. Speaking in tongues does not prevent it.

The irony is.. you as a tongue speaker fail to see how tongue speakers testify to other believers into thinking they don't have something tongue speakers have and so non tongue speakers worry about whether they are saved or not if they do not have the Holy Spirit by a sign of tongue as you guys claim to be using tongues as a sign for in receiving that "holy Spirit" apart from salvation when you heard the calling of the gospel the first time when you had believed.

Even one tongue speaker tried to say that he doesn't do that but by referring to Acts 8th chapter, he could not see that was exactly what he was doing in sowing doubts about a believer even having the Holy Spirit. He saw what I was trying to do when I put him on the spot and he dropped it, but that was really his inevitable conclusion he was leading to by using that reference in justifying how a believer can receive the Holy Spirit apart from salvation by a sign of tongues.

I do point out that Acts 8th reference did not say they spoke in tongues, because they all spoke the same language, and more importantly, that they had not received the Holy Spirit yet as Luke recorded it as truth and so they were not saved until they did when their hearts and Simon's heart was off of Philip to seeking the face of the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation for why Peter & John had to come down.

Towards the end of the chapter, Philip was sent to an Ethiopian eunuch and he learned something from that prior experience for why Peter and John had to come down for the Lord to take the people's eyes off of himself.

Acts 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. 36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

So Philip asked that question because he was water baptizing seekers before that were not really believing with all their hearts as was evident with Simon whom still thought the supernatural was something he could buy and do himself. So was the people's hearts not right with the Lord when getting water baptized but just following Philip because they were fans more so of the miracles coming from seemingly Philip rather than believers in Jesus Christ in seeing Him working.

Simon having bewitched the people with unclean spirits was probably why the people's mindset was on Philip rather than the One he was preaching about, but as it is, Philip had to ask that question before he water baptized that eunuch.

Tongue speakers do not take responsibility for what they sow, and when you guys claim private use, all you are doing is promoting another gospel, another receiving of the spirit which is not the Holy Spirit, and thus apostasy when tongues is not to suppose to serve as a sign towards the believers for anything, especially for receiving the Holy Spirit when it is by faith and not by sight in Jesus Christ.

Then you should discern how to abstain from all appearances of evil by not continuing in tongues for private use, otherwise, look how easily the pagans can have fellowship with you with that very same kind of tongue and you would know it not.

How can any one root them out of the assembly? By knowing that His gift of tongues will come with interpretation and since it was for edifying the assembly, it should be no wonder why the gift of prophesy was better than tongues for it is not a stand alone gift and edification comes right away.

That is all very sad.
Someone sold you a line, and you bought it..and have ended up with a spirit of fear.
Jesus said..." My sheep know My voice, and a stranger they will not follow."

We who speak in tongues and use the other gifts too..do actually " know His voice." Some spirit has " out faithed" you..that is very sad.
May the Lord bless you in spite of yourself, with what is rightful yours, in Him.

How do you apply 2 Corinthians 11:1-4 when tongue speakers are promoting prayer tongue gained by receiving another spirit as in another Jesus?

How can this not be seen as a legitimate concern for what tongue speakers are testifying about in how they got that tongue?

And it doesn't stop there. Some go on to promote receiving the Holy Spirit again and again after other sensational signs in the flesh like in the "holy laughter" movement, the Toronto's Blessings, the Pensacola Outpouring, Ernest Angeley's Healing Crusade, and etc. where believers falling down from loss of control is considered a sign. .

As for churches that claim actually speaking another language, God would not have gibberish among it. One church hired a linguist to record and to prove they had God's gift of tongues but they found out it was just gibberish nonsense.

How could this happen? Joyce Meyers said that she gets a sense of what is being said in tongues is how she interprets it. So is it any wonder how people are winging the gibberish in interpreting it?

Even some claim they can interpret their own tongue and they can't prove they knew that tongue as a second language which is why the Holy Spirit divides the gifts seveally as He wills and not give tongues and interpretation to the same person.

So it is circumspect, especially if they claim they got that tongue by ignoring the warning given by Paul in 2 Corinthians 11:1-4 & John's warning to test the spirits to avoid speaking the way the world does in 1 John 4:1-6 .

I'm kinda thinking there were no cloven flames of fire alighting on their heads as was in Acts? I do believe in tongues as a human language used to spread the gospel to all Nations. I know many who practice this. It is not for me to say who God blesses with the Holy Spirit. The 1st Protestant Church I attended was a tongue speaking, Spirit slaying name it claim it crowd. I most definitely thought that I wasn't saved after all so, I faked it and just blubbered right along with the rest of them (was strange) Then, going up to the Alter call, one of the Assoc. Pastors kept pushing my forehead...hard. I would not let him push me down!! I actually stayed there for a little over a year before I studied up on tongues. Not to my surprise, I was reading the bible and realized there was not one interpreter in the whole place...though I do not know how anybody could hear a thing with all that noise as everyone did it at the same time and for the life of me, I could not see how it edified anybody! I do not put ANYBODY down for practicing tongues...just sharing my 1st Prot. Church experience. Soon after I attended an Assemblies of God for about 4 years...moved further away from the city and now go to a Baptist Church and love the teaching and praise and worship there.

Hi Jiffy, if I was in your presence, knowing what you believe, I wouldn't. That is not love. Because tongues is a sign to the unbeliever. You.

I'm not saying you are unsaved. You may be. But there is a second class that tongues is a sign to - the unbeliever in the gifts, called the uninformed in verse 23. That class I know you are in, by every word and uncharitable blasphemy that comes out of your mouth relating God's gift to the devil.

Speaking in tongues is a peculiar gift, and God made it that way. It brings a spotlight onto those Christians hiding in their pews, and confirms them in their unbelief. You see, you are wrong in thinking that a "sign" to the unbeliever must be a positive sign, like preaching in the foreign languages of those Paul was an apostle to. That is a very reasonable assumption that the human mind would make. But tongues is never shown in scripture to be preaching long dissertations. So, it isn't. It is a negative sign of judgment.

You may think I'm pulling this out of my mind, like you are, and have no scriptural example as you don't. Oh, but I do. This same type of negative sign that confirms an unbeliever in their unbelief is spoken about in another place. And you'll never guess in a million years. It is in the gospels. And the sign is Jesus.

Luke 2:34 Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against.

For further proof, it is for the same purpose. See verses hidden in plain sight for the discerning to understand.

Luke 2:35 "that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
1 Corinthians 14:25 "And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed"

Both have aspects of a dual purpose.

"fall and rise" In the case of Jesus, it is obvious. The Pharisees whose hearts were hard and jealous, fell, even in the presence of One doing great miracles in the Supernatural, with a capital "S". The humble disciples, rose.

In the case of tongues, it also has a dual aspect. For splitting asunder the devout and the mocker, as was also shown on the Day of Pentecost, when the devout Jews got saved, and the mockers left blaspheming in their carnal ignorance.

Look at Isaiah 53 about our beloved Jesus. Notice any similarities between how mockers perceive tongues?

Isaiah 53:

1 Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
3 He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

You seem a little caught up with some.
Some non-tongue speaking Christian are fleshly and carnal too. Yet I doubt you lump yourself in with them?
So why lump the rest of us in with the fleshly "holy-rollers" ?... as they used to be called years ago.

As for churches that claim actually speaking another language, God would not have gibberish among it. One church hired a linguist to record and to prove they had God's gift of tongues but they found out it was just gibberish nonsense.

That is sad. Wow...gibberish nonsence. So you think some man has more insight that God Himself eh. Wow, That you dare say that about what God does. Risky business.
I've seen others try to explain this to you in other threads.....obviously you just don't want to hear ...your mind is made up.
In the Church meeting it is a gift of tongues. Not everyone has that gift.
At home when in worship and prayer..it is a prayer language.
The Interpreter is only needed in the Church meeting.

The prayer language may sound like gibberish to you...

Joyce Meyers said that she
Who made Joyce Meyers God's spokesman?!!

< snip >
So it is circumspect, especially if they claim they got that tongue by ignoring the warning given by Paul in 2 Corinthians 11:1-4 & John's warning to test the spirits to avoid speaking the way the world does in 1 John 4:1-6 .

And then we get the some again...who cares what some do or say, I don't.

" Some" non-tongue" speakers believe and do one thing, and "some" do another. All of us are not 'lumps' or all the same in what our experiences are.

Whenever I ask God ..." What about him , or her Lord?"

God says the same as He said to John, when he asked about Peter,
" What is that to you, you follow thou Me. "

Bless you...H

I am with bbyrd009 on this.

Man added the word Holy. Bible just means Book.

A bible is no better than a door stop...unless and until God's Holy Spirit breathes upon it and makes it alive to the reader.

As we have said before..too many people live somehow believing that it says :- " In the beginning was the bible and the bible was with God the bible was God!" o_O
John 1:1 "In the beginning was The Word, and The Word was with God, and the Word was God. "
Always has been , always will be.

The Word of God is Jesus Christ our Lord. Not the bible.
There is not Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and the Bible...

The living Word , is the Living Word.

( Just a pet- of mine)

.....My two cents :)
Books it is in fact.
Without the Bible people would be lost.
The Bible is a Holy Book the word of God, it is written ?
So one has to regard the Bible as a Holy books, because if we reflect in such we can see the working of Gods Word.

I don't..
I see no connection here.

That's because there isn't any connection. You can't see what's not there. LOL

2 Corinthians 11:1-4 Oh, that you would bear with me in a little folly—and indeed you do bear with me. 2 For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it!

The second book has nothing to do with the gifts of the Spirit? Been there, done that.

It goes back to the Corinthian's main problem - immaturity. Funny, they are complimented by Paul in 1 Corinthians 1, that they "fall short in no gift." They have all the true offices and all the true gifts, but needed teaching on immature handling of both. Their immaturity put up with sin in their midst by their leaders, and needed reprimanding. By the second book, they had repented. Even so, now Paul admonishes them to keep growing in love and restore the fellow they excommunicated. They are still immature, and it is that immaturity that causes fear in Paul about them. That is what 2 Cor. 11:1-4 is about. NOT that they had received another spirit already, or another gospel already, or another Jesus already. That error in discernment belongs to Jiffy, as he hunts swiftly for any verses containing the words "another spirit" and misapplies them helter skelter.

I don't disagree, we enjoy reading it and it blesses our soul...but so many just get stuck there... they get focussed on the Book, rather than the Spirit of divine truth which flows from it. They do not even see that The Word is Jesus Christ Himself.
Heb 1:1-2 "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, ( in The Book)
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds
.."

He spoke...but to us He still speaks ( if we listen) daily, deep in our hearts & spirits.

That you did not test the spirits but believed that was the Holy Spirit that came over you bringing that tongue which never comes with interpretation and so you assume it is a prayer language of the Holy Spirit when it is not.
I did not? Hmmm, you really do think you know a lot. What is it you have done to know so much?
"... According to your faith be it unto you." Matt 9:29

Not by seeking to receive the Holy Spirit apart from salvation. Don't you find it ironic that none of the other gifts are sought in that way by seeking to receive the Holy Spirit apart from salvation, but just tongues which never comes with interpretation?
God's gift of tongues is of other men's lips to speak unto the people in the mission field that it will come with interpretation in the assembly; it is not for private use just because that tongue comes with no interpretation which should prove it is not God's gift of tongues.
Knowing nothing of the miracles God has done in my walk with Him over the years and the answers I have received, you sure do draw some off the beam conclusions based on ignorance.

How is that relevant or is this another way that you as a tongue seeker condemn those who do not speak in tongues? People who speak in tongues curse and cuss the same as anybody else does. Speaking in tongues does not prevent it.
Again your presumptive conclusion based on ignorance of me and what I believe or do is astounding. I do not condemn people who don't speak in tongues any more than I condemn people who were born to poverty in Haiti while I was born in a land of relative riches. That you know little about the gifts of tongues [there is more than one] is evident. There is more than one, but I won't press too hard against a 'made up' mind. Only God gives the increase.

Again you lump me together with others about whom you have read or heard or even known. You know nothing of me and my beliefs with regard to tongues or much of anything else. One day maybe you will learn that discussion requires communication. So far you have told what I believe and have been quite wrong. You have condemned for something I have never done. Again I won't attempt to enlighten you. Only God gives the increase, but even God will not force feed anyone.

Well it seems you already know everything there is to know, so then this is next..

"... If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven:..." Matt 19:21

Again you are talking to the wall. Communication will do wonders even as faith does wonders, but since you already know every answer, why should you admit even the possibility of...well I won't say it...? Consider rather the words written by Solomon long before Jesus was born in Bethlehem:

"Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts." Prov 21:2

"Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed." John 6:26-27

"Judge not, that ye be not judged.
For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye." Matt 7:1-5

"And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.
But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.
For he that is not against us is on our part." Mark 9:38-40

Very well said Amadeus.
I find it very sad.
It reminds me of Psalm 78.
41 Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. They remembered not His hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.

Yes it is very sad where people have gone in spite of all that God has done for them. We too often look to man's purpose and/or to what man would do instead of looking to God's purpose and/or what God would do.

I recently within the last few days saw the Trinity in one verse. Check it out. Romans 8:9

9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
Did you ever notice the trinity in this verse?
Mathew 3:16-17
16After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, 17and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”

Jesus the Son
The Holy Spirit
God Father
