Speaking in Tongues a Cessationist View

“For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” (1 Corinthians 14:2)

Perfect example of what an unknown tongue is. Only God understands when you speak a language different from everyone else. The spirit in this verse is mans spirit speaking mysteries if in a language only he understands.

And are you saying then that you were a personal witness to what the "originals" were and are now the perfect interpreter for that which is now?

If you study independently of the Pentecostal framework, tongues messages were the first words spoken that became the New Covenant, along with prophecy.

Study of the even the scriptures by the flesh alone with the best of brains [even one equivalent to Einstein] is still what Solomon described: "...a weariness of the flesh..." [Ecc 12:12].

If we discard or suppress or quench the Holy Spirit God has given us to encounter truth in favor of the flesh of man even in dealing with the written scriptures as so many have done it is still a weariness of the flesh. Man has never changed, unless and if he has yielded himself to God through the Holy Spirit. I guess you will disagree here again, but I pray that you will at least bite your tongue instead of spouting the conclusions of your favorite theologians. Again from Solomon as he wrote as God inspired him. There is...

"...a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;" Ecc 3:7

They were in fragments, when collected became the complete (perfect) revelation along with Jesus' words and the book of Revelation. They ceased when scripture became complete.

Your presumption that that which is perfect has already come in the written Bible is foolishness. The unopened Bible is dead. The opened Bible read with the wrong spirit is dead. Without the quickening of the Holy Spirit, the words of scripture that you read and that I read are dead.

As far as you know, yes, based upon where you are looking, your current def of "church," etc. But I wasn't kidding you'd have another vision here if you spent a week blindfolded first ok, or did some other exercise to take your eyes out of the equation. Bc you would have to rely so much more on your ears. But see you are judging by those "attempting" to speak in tongues based upon your current def of "church" whereas I would suggest closing your eyes the next time you find yourself "wherever two or three are gathered in His name" fwiw, not saying tongues is not still um I guess prolly "heard" by some ppl in congregations, but they wouldn't be the tongues you would be looking for either I guess

If you speak a tongue unknown to man but unto God it’s not a prayer language. If I speak French to a room full of Germans only God will understand. If you speak jibberish like what’s going on today nobody understands. God knows your intentions I’m sure. But that’s it.

That is not true.

But some get so excited they babble and think it's real.

I went to one church and when they started I knew what was coming.

I knew somebody was going to stand up and start babbling. Then I knew she was going to collapse, slain in the spirit, which is completely nonbiblical. She did.

I believe tongues are given at need, but rarely.

The much more valuable gifts are prophecy, not meaning telling the future, and discernment of spirits, not meaning being a lie detector. But they are also gifts one cannot turn on and off at will.

I am sorry you feel that way. I don't. I received a gift of tongues in 1976. For me it became a daily means of communication with God who is a Spirit.

There are people who have misused or abused the "very good" things that God made, but we should not be rejecting those things because of the errors of men but rather using them as God directs.

Babies babble until they learn to speak properly. So it is with some called Christians. They never proceed from the babble and find themselves along with those who worked on the tower [Gen 11] in confusion. Their language remains a babble and some of them simply give up on the gift of God.

Yes, God made tongues very good [Gen 1:31] along with everything else and so there was no confusion until man started leading himself instead of following God.

I am sorry you feel that way. I don't. I received a gift of tongues in 1976. For me it became a daily means of communication with God who is a Spirit.

I used to think as you do. Having spoken in what I believed to be tongues for quite some time. But after studying to answer the questions dogging me, I came to believe today's tongues are of the flesh. And they stimulate the senses just as other vocal emotional releases do. People get a buzz doing this and think it is the Holy Spirit. But it is nothing like the originals.
