OK. For me it was inadvisable. After a year of cough cough I quit.

Much love!
I can see that this was sensible.

What I struggle with is hyperbole which erodes people's ability to consider the Scriptures dispassionately; and sometimes the 'smoking is sin' discourse seems to do this; not that I remotely advocate smoking.

I see it very important to understand what Sin actually is.

Much love!

It was never a sin. Which commandment did it break?
Pushing it on someone or blowing smoke in their face may be sinning, as it is not loving others as yourself.
So you love yourself if you ruin your lungs?
Is the body the temple of God?

Were there cigarettes back then?

I'm not saying it's a sin...just answering your question.

I DO believe it's advisable never to start.

So you love yourself if you ruin your lungs?
No. But neither is there a command to love yourself. Only modern day 'selfies' would like you to believe that is one of the commandments.
Is the body the temple of God?
Yes, but look at the context Paul mentions it in...

Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? (1Co 6:15-19 KJV)

So that passage is in relation to sexual sin/fornication.

Were there cigarettes back then?
I don't know, I'm not an historian, but this passage applied back then...

Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, (Touch not; taste not; handle not; Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? (Col 2:20-22 KJV)

I'm not saying it's a sin...just answering your question.
So far the last three were questions of yours. This is not my Thread, and I had no questions.

I DO believe it's advisable never to start.
I'd agree.

I'd agree.
There is not a command to love yourself?
Mathew 22:39

So as long as there's no fornication..I can do what I want with the temple of God?

Touch not, taste not.
Now YOU are taking a verse out of context....
or are you? Too tired to find out.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm just not into the walk of legalism...

Colossians 2:20-22 NASBS
[20] If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as, [21] "Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!" [22] (which all refer to things destined to perish with use)-in accordance with the commandments and teachings of men?

...unless it will cause my weaker brother to stumble.
(BTW, I don't smoke)

Yes I voted. As I cannot judge others, maybe not even myself, I chose #3.

Hope we all realize the entry to old cities was quite narrow.. when people arrived at the gates if the camel was laden with a full load, it could not get through, but if his load be removed he could. Maybe we need to get rid of our worldly baggage, not just possessions, but the guilt we carry, the judgement we say we don't but do. (maybe just me and mine)

Blessings
I've heard/read it said that there was one time, only one way into Jerusalem. And, it was a very narrow entrance so, they had to take the packs off of the camels, like you said, to fit through. What I had read was that this road was called the Needle...have not looked into it just read it. Interesting analogy for the rich man, yeah?

Points for your discussion;
1. the word tobacco does not occur in the scriptures.
2. Tobacco was not discovered until the new world.
3. Nothing you put in your mouth corrupt the temple, it is what comes out of your mouth.
4. No scriptures pertaining to exercising or eating right.
5. Nothing about being worried about how long you live.
6. Does..... Do not let anyone judge you on what you eat or drink sound familiar?

Smoking is an addiction, and from what I see it is tougher to quit them than it is heroin! I think that is because of the need for the smoke, comes way more than after a fix of heroin. We are human and if you think for one second that those who started smoking and are totally hooked have NOT tried to stop many times, and totally regret starting...you are wrong (just in general, nobody on here, lol) I smoked for 35 years and have only been off them now for 9 years, this month. I use the vaporizers. I still use nicotine in them and know I could cut them out as well BUT...from my years of research on these things, I find nothing bad about them...I get my e liquid and my vaporizer from North Carolina...same vendor all this time and, he makes his own liquid AND puts the ingredients on the bottles. I know what is in there...3 ingredients, and all are way past FDA approved...so, after all this time I still picnch myself that I don't smoke cumbusted tobacco anymore, with the like, 4000 deadly chemicals. Not to mention the cancer causing tar that an analog cigarette causes. I'm done now :)
God Bless!

My son died of drugs. I am with you. There is a lot of stupid things we can do. The list is endless. But it is not biblical. Kind of like saying flying in a airplane is sin. Not to say preacher can't preach against drugs, but to proclaim it a sin is were we don't want to go with man made beliefs.

God spoke to my heart and said. “If you reckon yourself dead to smoking you will never smoke another cigarette as long as you live. If you choose to smoke, I will still love and bless you but there will be as it were smoke between us.”

I pray for this day. Tried many times to quit. Thank you for your testimony.

Blessings

My heart goes out to those persons and families that have been destroyed by addictive habits. But if we start making man made laws or
sins, it will cause a great deal of judgement and condemnation which is just as bad for the soul.

I agree with this. I had indeed hoped that this thread would provide for some rational discussion and this is exactly the sort of comment that is constructive; thank-you.

For sure. Can we stop other Christians from bad eating habits? Shall that become a sin too? Ha, we can come up with all kinds of laws, can't we? If one coasts through a Stop sign...it will also be a sin because we are to follow the laws of the land and, coasting through is breaking the law of the land. We are a fallen people in a fallen world, and are subject to so many things that can trap us. I'm still hooked on nicotine (NOT nearly as much as a tobacco cigarette) But then, it isn't the nicotine that causes cancer, it's the tar and many, many carcinogenic chemicals added into them. If it were not for these vaporizers, I would probably still be smoking...and flat broke too!

There is not a command to love yourself?
Mathew 22:39
That says 'as yourself' meaning it's assumed already you love yourself. No Commandment needed. Notice in vs. 40, Jesus said 'on these two'. Which two? 1.Love God. 2 Love neighbor. There is no third to 'love self'.

So as long as there's no fornication..I can do what I want with the temple of God?
The moral law is summed up in the 10 Commandments. There is no 11th, "Thou shalt not smoke" or every Christian living in a smog polluted city is sinning.

Touch not, taste not.
Now YOU are taking a verse out of context....
or are you? Too tired to find out.
I just woke up from a nap. LOL

Ha, we can come up with all kinds of laws, can't we?
There is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between "we can come up with all kinds of laws" and plain commandments of God which are to be obeyed without question. It is God who says that you are to glorify God IN YOUR BODY.

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. (1 Cor 6:19,20)

So how does poisoning your body with nicotine, smoke, drugs, or hallucinogens glorify God??? How does applying pagan/criminal/gangsterish tattoos on your body glorify God??? How does immodest dressing glorify God??? Christians want to become Antinomians simply because of God's grace. And that is not what grace is all about. Just as no unclean thing could ever be allowed into the tabernacle and temple, the same applies to the temple of the Holy Spirit (the Christian's body).
