I just learned that the story of nailing the 95 thesis to the church door was not told until after Ludder's (Luther's) death. Kind of interesting.

It was a pagan tradition that originated in England. For a long time though, Guy Faulkes Day got celebrated more. Now fewer people do that and more are doing the Americanized version of Halloween. It mostly bored me even as a child. I didn't see why it was fun to dress up and pretend to be scary. I didn't get it. Here's a link about the origin if you're interested in the history.

I would say it's about even - bonfire night is celebrated quite a lot where I live, ( I am near Lewes and they have different bonfire associations and it's always been a big event ) I personally do not celebrate either- fireworks are just so expensive, and I am on high ground, so I just enjoy everyone else's - years ago more people had bonfires in their own gardens, that's developed more into organised events. Halloween I avoid, and never encouraged my children to get involved ( trick or treating was reletively new back then ) I don't like it, never have, never will. I personally don't see it as just a bit of fun. We don't get many people going round anyway. It's become very commercialised - just like Christmas.

I hope you guys are prepared to explain to God why you hid in a corner of your basement while you let Satan take His world.

October is here again and all the children are going to dress up and come for candy. How do others handle Halloween? Is it an evil holiday or harmless fun for children?

We take the candy from the kids who knock on the door, about 80% of what they have, then tell them we're giving it to the kids that are too lazy to go trick or treating, but we really keep most of it ourselves and preach about the evils of others having too much wealth.

This teaches them one of the tenets of Socialism. Then we say "Trick!" and slam the door. :D

Why should I feel under pressure to celebrate something that means absolutely nothing to me just because society decided to take on board another countries custom - I think God would understand my reasons. He also understands why I dislike most of what is expected of us at Christmas -how the church claims it as theirs, when it is a complete pagan event.
I have got involved with Light parties at the churches I have been a part of in the past, but as I am no part of one at the moment, I don't see why I should conform. I am usually working anyway. My children all celebrate the evening now that they are adults with their own children- it's their choice to make.

For a moment I did chuckle to myself reading what you do, then I thought about it - think that is so wrong, on so many levels !

I become all things to all men.
Lol, does this mean you become a murderer or a thief?

I don't believe celebrating evil is what Paul had in mind when he said this.

He said BOTH of these things:

1 Cor 9:19-23--Although I am a free man and not anyone’s slave, I have made myself a slave to everyone, in order to win more people. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win Jews; to those under the law, like one under the law — though I myself am not under the law — to win those under the law. To those who are without that law, like one without the law — not being without God’s law but within Christ’s law — to win those without the law. To the weak I became weak, in order to win the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that I may by every possible means save some. Now I do all this because of the gospel, so I may become a partner in its benefits.

Phil 5:11--Don't participate in the fruitless works of darkness, but instead expose them.

We've let Satan steal Prayer from schools, the respect for our country, the sacredness of real marriage, even the Rainbow and the word "Gay".... just to name a few things. How much more are we content to let him say we have to forfeit?

Willie, I'm having a hard time with your logic here. I agree that the devil has stolen GOOD things from our nation--prayer and Bible reading in the schools (didn't stop me from praying as a public school teacher, though), the sacredness of marriage, etc.

But I don't believe that Halloween was ever a good thing. I believe it was pagan from the beginning. Even if it wasn't, evil and death are glorified and celebrated on this day. So, I don't think it's a good thing for Christians to celebrate Halloween--IMHO.

I don't have a problem with churches doing something different on this day to give kids and families a good alternative. Or esp. to reach out to kids/families in the community in order to preach the Good News....

Did you go to the FaceBook Page site I posted where our church advertises "Fall-O-Ween? (a takeoff on "Following.")
Should Christians not participate in Halloween?

I chuckle at people freaking out about a particular day of the year...… when they proudly wear the Roman Torture method of death.... (a cross) that existed as evil for ages before Christ came along. This, alone, should show us that God takes back from Satan anything and everything.... and expects us to do the same.

Now, this made me chuckle. I mean, Jesus did say to take up our cross daily and follow Him.

I don't believe the cross was a symbol used by Satanists until AFTER Jesus was crucified on it. Now, Satanists use the upside-down cross for their evil purposes. But for the Christian, the cross symbolizes Jesus' death for our sins. The cross I wear is empty, symbolizing the resurrection as well.

Like I said before, it's debatable that the celebration we call Halloween ever belonged to God, so how do we "take back" something that was NEVER His? I don't believe we can.

You think Halloween began with Adam? Eve must have taken that first bite on October 31, 6,000 BC. LOL

And, I'm pretty sure the Roman cross was well known as an instrument of Death long before Jesus was even born.

Not sure where you coming from with this silly remark. I've said nothing of the sort. Based on what I've read about Halloween, I think it started with pagans prior to the birth of Jesus Christ, and this is what I have stated.

I know that sin entered the world through Adam's disobedience to God's command not to eat the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. So, in a sense, all evil in this world resulted from that one sinful act. But I had not mentioned this in this thread.

I don't care when some pagans decided to celebrate a particular day sometime in those thousands of years before Christ. God created the day, and it should not be surrendered to Satan as if there is nothing we can do about it. That attitude pervades way too much of Christianity.... It is "Defeatism."

FYI, pumpkin carving has become popular at this time of the year:
