Halloween...just another Christian / Pagan holiday?
As many probably know, when Christianity and the Roman Empire "merged" so did our cultures. Today most of our Christian holidays have a Pagan side. Depending on what country you live in, the Pagan side of the holidays are more obvious.

Even the names of the days of the week and months are Pagan. It goes into astronomy were planets are named after Pagan gods. Our symbol for the healing arts, the caduceus (the entwined snakes on a phallus symbol) comes from the witch's craft of healing. Back in the day a pharmacist could be considered a witch, dispensing potions that heal without the intervention of God.

If you search the OT you will not find the word wed or wedding. That is because ancient Hebrew did not have a name for it. Most marriages were about a man "taking a wife" the union. Not that there were no celebrations, it occurred rarely, but nothing like we have today. Marriage ceremonies were big with Pagans and many of our Christian marriage customs come from the Pagans. The Jews in the biblical era adopted their interest in ceremonies from the Persians. The custom of exchanging wedding rings was not Hebrew or Christian, the Romans used wedding rings but the custom can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians.

Public ceremonies that included documentation did not occur until the Middle Ages and mostly involved the upper class and that was mostly about property, wealth, and power.

It comes to the point that it is hard to separate Christian cultures from the Pagan customs of society. In the Renascence period the church persecuted people of science so one could say anything technical could be considered non-Christian.

The lines between celebrating halloween and having a christian alternative are easy to distinguish.
The RCC was established when Christianity shook hands with heathenism and took their practices and imagery into the Church.

The Sunday school at our church used to get the children carving pumpkins with crosses and stars and such which I thought was a nice idea.
of course, if you think that the blend of paganism and the gospel are comfortable bedfellows.

It is a given that the Gospel cuts across heathenism and demolishes it. Why then would any believer in God's good news entertain practicing the customs of heathenism?

Is it because the Gospel as understood by the majority can not distinguish between what the Gospel constitutes and what heathenism constitutes? I think this is sadly the case. Here are some examples to name a few:-

Christmas trees......the great phallus ....ohhh and you wondered what the the tinsel and baubles were...none other than sperm and testicles.
Easter eggs.....yet another fertility symbol.....and the rabbits, yes it incorporates orgies.
Halloween......Celtic or Druid beliefs in ghosts and spirits....preoccupation with death

So what do you consider paganism in my post? Is it the pumpkins, the carving or the symbols? I see no harm in taking something all kids know about today and turning it into something good and positive.

Constantine thought so also.

October is here again and all the children are going to dress up and come for candy. How do others handle Halloween? Is it an evil holiday or harmless fun for children?

I have gone back and forth on it. I have finally decided if Jesus was here on earth, He would be out with the trick or treaters sharing His love. So I am a big kid at heart. I love dressing up. But I won't anymore or ever let my daughter dress up as "scarey" things. I was a witch before and decided against that. And pumpkins are made by God. I love sharing the pumpkin parable with kids and everything. I shared my opinion with my church this last Halloween that having a scarey "murder mystery" or haunted house shouldn't be a part of the church. The leaders actually listened to me, which I am grateful for.

I don't care when some pagans decided to celebrate a particular day sometime in those thousands of years before Christ. God created the day, and it should not be surrendered to Satan as if there is nothing we can do about it. That attitude pervades way too much of Christianity.... It is "Defeatism."
some just cant get past this lol

Back on topic, People on this thread have stated that halloween is pagan and satanic in origin. This is true.

So, some of you defending practicing it still haven't given a good reason for doing so. Just excuses.
I've heard some say before that it's just for the kids.
If you are for the kids, you won't want to harm them by getting them involved with Satan.
I have heard testimony about kids who were raised celebrating halloween who eventually got involved in rebellion, drug addiction, and the occult down the road. Take a stand and quit making excuses for the sake of your children.

I tend to agree with you but it's hard when you're in a neighborhood where everyone around you is celebrating it, and everyone in school is. I don't know what Christian parents are doing now to shield their children in public school.

Then perhaps you should find out.

I have gone back and forth with it too. I remember growing up (in a non-Christian but moral household) my friends and I going out trick-or-treating and coming back with pillowcases full of candy. When I became a Christian I strictly wanted to avoid it. Now I'm unsure. I don't like the holiday but I'm not sure what God thinks and He hasn't shown me.

Yes we put up a Christmas tree and buy our family Christmas presents. I really don't like Halloween at all - I don't like seeing all the Halloween decorations out, and all the advertisements for it. When I was a kid I loved it - I loved all the candy and fun. I don't like the evil associated with it, but on the other hand it is fun as a kid to dress up and have fun so I don't know what God's mind is on it. I lean towards Him not wanting it.
