The word "catholic" means universal. Up until the Bishop of Rome took over the overall leadership of it, the Christian church was a unified body presided over by regional bishops. In this sense it was the universal church and so the "catholic" label for the church was quite true. When the Bishop of Rome took over the leadership, the church became the Roman Catholic church; in other words, the universal church became the Roman church, incorporated into the New Holy Roman Empire, governed by emperors approved by the Holy See. This merged the religious with the political, with the Holy See dominating world politics as well as religious doctrine and practice.Then why isn't "Catholic" mentioned even once in the Bible?
