Why was the Earth without Form and void? What cause that?

Without form means, not like we see today with life, mountains, lakes, rivers, clouds, etc. God created it, a large ball of minerals with water on it in darkness. Then He created light, which is pretty complex, particles and waves that travels very fast. Then just follow along in Genesis day by day for the rest.

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created (bara) the heaven and the earth.

It does not state when the heavens and earth were created or if they were created at the same time. It could have been the same time, but it could have been a few years, a hundred years, even thousands of years apart. It doesn’t say …..so we don’t know.

But what it does say is that both the heavens and the earth were created. Additionally, the Hebrew particle ‘eth before both “the heavens” and “the earth” emphasize the article “the”, which distinguishes them both from the proceeding event of verse 2.


Gen 1:2

And the earth was (hayah) without form, and void (tohu va bohu); and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.


While hayah has been translated “was” in most English versions (including the LXX). In the original Hebrew ….there was no verb “to be” (which is translated was) However, there is a verb “to become”, which is how this should be translated. The second was in this verse was added by translators as there was/is no corresponding Hebrew word in that place.

“And the Earth BECAME without form and void…” Is how the text should read..... God had created both the heavens and the earth, but it was the earth that became an empty wasteland.

Isa 45:18 states that God created the earth not in vain tohuw (wasteland), but formed it to be inhabited.


Although I can speculate (based on scripture) as to what took place between Genesis_1:1 & 1:2 …the Bible does not totally affirm as to what exactly happened….so we do not know.

What we do know is…. from Genesis_1:2 to 1:21, God did not create anything again until the 5th day when He created soul life in “great whales and every living creature (chay nephesh) that moveth”…

And based on the truth that God did not create anything between 1:2 & 1:21 tells us that all those things that are mentioned between 1:3 & 1:20 had previously existed in 1:1, before the Earth became w/o form and void (tohu va bohu)… as God just spoke (not created) it back into existence.



Biblical definition of “Create”: (bara) - The word created/create…. is to bring something into existence that did not exist before, or to make something out of nothing. Only God can create. Man can fabricate, build, construct, design, 3d print, make, assemble, etc.… but man cannot create. And once God creates something He does not need to create it again, because it now exists…. He can just speak it into being.

It means there was no matter as yet, and all was spirit...as God is spirit.

"Cause" on the other hand is what changed that, and the cause was God, who spoke all things of form and matter into existence.

Kinda missed on "bara".
The Hebrew word requires a material to make the object being created.

You can Bara a wooden table a stone table or metal table or plastic table but a material is demanded by the use by the verb "bara". Meaning that because of the use of "bara" in English an implied "out of" should be understood in the scriptures...

But there is nothing listed...even the word for "nothing" because we humans would turn it into something if we could.

And the whole section is poetic.

Since God is perfect, many do not believe He goofed up and accidentally made the earth without form and void

So some believe something happened in between Genisis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2 which would have been the fall of satan which would have created the need for the Lord to re-create the world so it would no longer be without form and void.

No, if God said the world was without form and void... it WAS in fact without form and void as God is not just making stuff up and calling it poetry

The expression "formless and void" means that there was literally nothing there. A void is a vacuum. There literally was nothing there but watch the hystrionics try to turn nothing into something.

There was no water as yet as God had not created water...so what does it mean?

That essentially God is choosing the laws that would govern our world and universe and making them work together in harmony. Without going back almost 6,000 years into the Ancient Near East to study speech and metaphoric expression you won't make sense of this with flat reading.

I am good on the Word ... The definition has to be derived from the use of the word biblically ... not a human standpoint or definition. So I ask ...if God needs something to create something... where did the something come from that He is using.
But you are correct in the definition of making something.

Made = asah in Hebrew – a substance required of which the thing made, consists.

Formed = yatsar in Hebrew - fashioned out of something that was already in existence.

One of the root meanings is "confusion" and we know the Lord is not the author of confusion

So we see the Lord is NOT the One responsible for the world being without form and void.

When something is VOID when it should not be VOID.... it's confusing because something should be there but instead it is VOID

God did not make the world without form and void.

The Word says it was without form and void, but never says God is the One Who made it without form and void
