Thank you for your response!

Per IICor.6:11, I had always thought one is sanctified at one's water baptism after one's instant of faith - justified at one's instant of faith. If you could show me a discrepancy using this passage, I sure would appreciate it. I'm on the run right now, and will look at Lk.3:16 again when get back home, ie, am very familiar with Corinthians in the mean time

Old Jack's opinion.
Pretty sure you mean 1 Cor 6:11, not 2nd, and as such yes that is true, we are washed, sanctified and justified, BUT, "by the Spirit of our God", as the end of v11 shows.

Ah, heck - close enough - yes, ICor.

Old Jack, at the hospital now, and will be home soon I hope - others not doing as well as us.

Ya, no, sorry Jack, Logabe had it right, it is when you are baptized with fire that you are sanctified, and THAT is the baptism of the Holy Spirit. John's baptism was to proclaim the coming of the savior. After we receive Him, Jesus baptizes us with the fire of the Holy Spirit. Luke 3:16 NIV
Act 26:16 But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you,
Act 26:17 delivering you from your people and from the Gentiles--to whom I am sending you
Act 26:18 to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'

Justification and sanctification are by faith in Christ, and as such, they are simultaneous events. Show me where in Scripture sanctification is linked in any way to the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

There's one other matter to deal with here. To be baptized with fire is not a good thing. It means that you are chaff that is being separated from the wheat with the judgement of unquenchable fire. You need to read your proof text in context.

Mat 3:10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
Mat 3:11 "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Mat 3:12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

Unsurprising you obviously don't understand the process of the Holy Spirit and being baptized in fire. Have you actually received the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
I suggest you read Rom 15:16 NIV and 1 Cor 6:11 NIV as well to see what the Holy Spirit does in us. Everything starts with faith in Jesus, which is why we seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit and receive sanctification.

If "Sanctification" viewed in the wide sense, eg, Acts26:18, 20:32, was = to "Sanctification" in the narrow sense then "Justification" and "Sanctification" would be simultaneous events, however they are different contextually, viz, wide and narrow senses.

Mat 3:12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."
Being baptized with the Holy Ghost and Fire is the most wonderful experience a
person can receive. It is what God sent His Son to die for. He died not only to
cover our sins, but also to eliminate them. Here is one of the things Jesus had to
say about the Spirit in Luke 11:11-13,

11 "Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son
for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish,
will he?
12 "Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a
scorpion, will he?
13 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts
to your children, how much more will your heavenly
Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"

Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as a good gift. Why? Because it is what separates
us from our sin. If the Holy Ghost is working properly in my heart and I treat my
enemy without respect, the Spirit automatically convicts me of my wrongdoing. It
uses the Fire of the Word to accomplish its purpose in my being. Yes... the Word is
that Fire and His Name is Jesus ( John 1:1). God is Spirit and that Spirit speaks to
me when I have done a lawless deed to change my behavior.

Yes... our sanctification is by faith in the Word that God has spoken to us. I can
rebel and neglect the Word that has been spoken, but God will bring me back to
another fiery trial until I become obedient to His command. That might take years,
but God has plenty of time to change my attitude, and He loves us enough to not
leave us in that carnal state.

The fire isn't physical, but it is a spiritual fire that works within an individual every-
day if that person so desires. We can quench the Spirit and neglect the gift that is
inside of us, but in the end God will get our attention by allowing tribulation to come
our way. Why? Because He loves us.

What is the purpose of the baptism of the Holy Ghost? One of the things God uses
the Spirit for is found in John 14:26,

26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will
send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring
to your remembrance all that I said to you.

He is your teacher. What does He teach you? He teaches you the ways of the Lord by
the Spirit. There's two ways you can be taught the scriptures, man's way or God's way.
I prefer to ask God to teach me by the Spirit so I can bare fruit. I think everybody wants
to be taught by God, but many times the carnal mind diverts a person from the straight
and narrow.

The Holy Ghost & fire is Jesus sitting as a refiner's fire, refining the sons of Levi. In other
words, He is setting us apart for the Master's use (Mal. 3:2-3)

2 "But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand
when He appears? For He is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap.
3 "He will sit as a smelter and purifier of silver, and He will purify
the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they
may present to the LORD offerings in righteousness.

That's called sanctification and He is doing that for us today.

What a God! What a Plan!

Logabe

To be baptized in connection with fire (Matt.3:11) is a good thing. Judgment is never conceived as a baptism with fire or another element. Baptism and baptizing always imply cleansing and not destruction, viz., the refiners's fire in Ma.3:2, 3, and etc. and etc.
