The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

Exactly. They mean exactly the same thing....except when they don't. :D

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

No. I indicated some may not grasp what I was saying. I said that God's word is not the Bible but the Bible is God's words. Fruit is not an orange but an orange is fruit. There was much more done and said than is contained in the Bible (per....well....the Bible). God's word existed before...

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

Yes, we have to agree to disagree. I do agree that the Bible is God's word (as I said in the post you quote). But Jesus Christ is not the Bible. The Bible is not greater than or equal to God. Anytime someone says "___________ is greater than God" they are wrong.

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

We probably should remember in the Hebrew faith God's name and word are inseparable (they are essentially the same). God's word is God's name expressed.

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

His Word is not the Bible. This was written prior to the completion of the OT. You will probably find this confusing and a contradiction (it is not) so I'm going to enjoy posting it :p...... God's word is not the Bible but the Bible is God's word.

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

I don't know French. I know English, Greek, Spanish, German and a little (very little) Hebrew. The point is we have to study Scriptures. Let Scripture interpret Scripture. Scripture states multiple places that NOTHING is magnified above Christ. Do we know the passage does not mean the Bible...

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

Here is the NASB (a more "literal" or "word for word" translation) Psalm 138:2 I will bow down toward Your holy temple And give thanks to Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word according to all Your name. The point is the verse cannot mean the Bible...

That is the ESV. It was what I had open.

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

Psalm 138:1-2.I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

No. We begin with using our God given brains to realize that if Scripture says the Bible is magnified above Christ then it is fiction because it also says nothing is magnified above Christ. The solution is Scripture does not say the Bible is magnified above Christ. You misinterpreted the verse.

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

Psalm 138:1-2 I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word. God's word here is not the Bible but God's words spoken to Israel. This was written before Scripture was...

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

So you also believe that the Bible is magnified above God's name?
  13. John Caldwell

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

No. What I am saying is that the Bible does not teach that God has magnified the Bible over Himself or His name. You have misunderstood Scripture and the meaning of God's Word in the text of Scripture.

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

It is heresy to magnify Scripture above God's name. Period.

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

Yes. Jesus lives within me (Paul says "Christ in me"). You need to understand what is being said here (and in the Bible). No member is deminishing Scripture. But as a Christian we discern Scripture because we know the One of Whom it speaks (we know God) and the Spirit dewlls in us. It is...

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

Very good (and interesting) illustration. I doubt the thought "these letters are better than my wife" ever crossed your mind. When we meet the One of Whom Scripture testifies nothing else ever compares.

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

We have to remember that the Word of God speaks to anything "proceeding from the mouth of God". It is wrong to reduce this (especially in Scripture) to the Bible. This is how the Son is the Word. This is how we can refer to Scripture as God's words. God's words are expressions of God...
  18. John Caldwell

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

The verse (by context) is not speaking of Scripture but God's Word. This should be obvious given the human writer God used.

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

I typically use the Greek when possible (I studied Greek as a graduate student). But I cannot work with Hebrew well at all. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Some hold this plays on Greek paganism...

The Scriptures are God's Greatest Gift to Mankind

False argument. No one is saying Scripture is not truth. We are denying God is less than Scripture.
