Exactly. Assurance is not assurance if all it does is promoted doubt and uncertainty. The believer rests in the finished work of Christ; John 19.30; Hebrews ch.s 9 and 10.

This is healthy, and to do so we go to the Scriptures and search our consciences.

@Oceanprayers Passages such as Romans 8 and John's First Epistle are tremendously assuring to the true believer resting in the finished work of Christ.

The idea of forfeiting salvation belongs to those who never had it. What Paul in Romans calls 'the obedience of faith' and 'obedience to the faith' belongs properly to those who do indeed believe, not to those who keep trying to produce supposedly enough works in order to become believers.

It doesn't mean that Paul himself didn't even know he was saved yet. He himself penned among the most wondrous words of assurance for the true believer; Romans 8, for example. Paul means in Philippians 3.14 that he has not yet arrived at all he has to do as regards the high calling of God in...

I would have thought that in principle a literal interpretation is often to be favoured, unless there is strong, contextual reason to see something as a figure of speech, etc.

@soul man Refreshing how prayer and the Scriptures move and challenge the individual conscience...

We will not achieve "sinless perfection" in this life; but we are saved by faith, resting in the finished work of the Lord Jesus at the Cross. Being saved Monday, lost again Tuesday, saved again Wednesday, doubtful Thursday......This is not the Gospel.

Faith is indeed a work of the Spirit of God, and not of the flesh.

@Rudometkin Romans 8.28 reminds us that God has His purposes, and that they are fulfilled in Christ. There is so much that we do not understand but we can trust indeed that God continues to fulfill His purposes.
