Webster's defines "allude" as: to make indirect reference; viz: infer. Allude is from
the Latin word alludere, which means: to play with.

My point is: certain belief systems support their proprietary doctrines by quoting
Bible passages that suggest that their doctrines are the God's truth without actually
saying so.

Take for example the Roman Church's claim that there's a purgatory. The Bible
doesn't straight out teach the existence of a purgatory so the Church relies upon
passages that suggest the possibility of one. In other words: their purgatorial
doctrine is based upon nothing more than allusion; viz: clever sophistry. Christ
gifted his church with competent instructors in order to counter this very thing.

†. Eph 4:14 . .Then we will no longer be like children, forever changing our minds
about what we believe because someone has told us something different or because
someone has cleverly lied to us and made the lie sound like the truth.

What I'm getting at is this: Regardless of the true identity of the spirits in prison
about whom Peter wrote at 1Pet 3:18-20, he didn't say straight out say that those
spirits had a second chance. He only says that the Spirit of Christ preached to them.
People have presumed to argue they had a second chance when in fact the Bible
doesn't say so; which is nothing in the world but alludere; viz: playing around with
scripture.

The bible isn't always plain. If you don't rely on allusion you will miss out on some key concepts, like the Trinity.

I also doubt that catholics consider purgatory as a second chance.

Did you know that there are far more in prison out side of a physical prison? Yes the whole world was held captive in Satan's chains at one time or another. Jesus said.. You shall know the TRUTH and the Truth shall set you free. I AM the way the TRUTH and the Life and nobody can come to the Father but by me says Jesus.
Set them free with thy Word of Lord for thy Word is Truth... In the beginning was the Word .... and the Word of Truth became flesh and dwelt among us.

A book I have titled "A Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament" indicates that Peter was writing to a small group of believers being ridiculed by a large group of unbelievers. He was telling them that suffering for doing good is not the same as suffering for doing evil. Jesus suffered for doing good and his resurrection vindicated him. Jesus preaching to those before the flood who were in the prison of the grave was not for conversion, but was done to vindicate Noah and those with him, a small group of only 8 being ridiculed by thousands. Peter was encouraging his readers by telling them just as God vindicated Noah and Jesus, so they would be vindicated at the Resurrection.

Speak for yourself. I do not condone doctrines based upon allusions because
allusions are arbitrary rather than revealed. Allusions play around with scripture,
and force scripture to mean things it doesn't say in writing.

Speak for yourself. I rather think the Bible reveals that the Godhead is a quartet
rather than a trio.
