Bible Study: 1 John <- Previous

1 John 3
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

In verse 16, John explains, this is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brother and sisters: Through out the ministry of Yeshua, all you could see him do aside from the times he had railed against the pharisees and the scribes through warning and correcting by parables, he did indeed lay down his entire life for the entire world so that the price of sin would be paid for, in the same way our lives should reflect the spirit of Christ living with in us, and the teachings that he had gave. Such as praying for your enemies, and doing good to those despitefully use you, to be able to give time to the needs of others, in seeking out to do the will of God, by the holy spirit that helps you in this conquest even if it may not seem you are doing a lot, remember that God is seeing your heart, and knows what is there.

In verse 17 John states if anyone has a material possession and sees a brother or sister in need but has not pity of them, how can the love of God be in that person? When someone is in dire need, perhaps materially, say you have a neighbor who doesnt have a car but you do, and they need to run to the store to get some food, what good is it if you do not help them, and they are in dire need of something to help them keep going and it infringes on our own time, but you are laying your life down for another out of love for God and love for them.

In verse 18 John states Dear children, let us not love with words or speech, but with actions and in truth. This verse stands on its own.
