Of course they are applicable to everyday life.
Churches, however, are here to teach us things we may not get to know on our own. The maybe not so important things, but it's good to know them to understand our faith better.
Teaching is a large part of the ministry of the church, but I generally attend to worship, to lift my voice with the congregation in song and praise, and to give thanks for His mercy and His grace. I tend to be very disappointed when I visit a church with an amplified "praise or worship team" that entertains a mostly silent congregation. I just don't get it.

I only would like to add, since you used one of my favorite scriptures,
John 13:8-10...
This show that Jesus wants us to accept His love. Peter did not want his feet washed. It's kind of humiliating to be sick (physically) and have to have your body washed. A person is giving love, and the other (Peter) has to accept it, or Jesus cannot be part of the person who will not accept His love.

Peter wasn't adverse to getting his feet washed, it was by whom he had the problem with. No one will be rejected for not accepting love, His love will be shown to them and His love is irresistible.

Philippians 2:7, rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

In ancient times there were no paved roads, they wore sandals and feet got dirty so before entering a home, someone would wash their feet for them, most likely a servant.

Luke 7:44, Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

Jesus told her she was saved by her faith, not her works, Luke 7:50, Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

I once struggled to accept love, showing love was easier and it was much easier for me to give than to receive. The Holy Spirit, in stages, showed me how to receive love and to ask God for whatever my heart desired. He desires to serve me, is that too controversial? I am not a servant, I am a daughter, accepted and loved.

Mark 11:24, Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

1 John 3:1, See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

You do agree, of course. And I agree that, yes, Peter was maybe embarrassed, or whatever the reason which could only be deduced, to have his feet washed by his Master, Jesus.

Good point.

I agree. Your last sentence reminds me of churches that are basically entertainment. I like Christian music but when you add a singer and a band and "real" music and then the congregation claps, I'm never sure it they're applauding the words or the band.

However, in some churches there is practically no teaching at the service or Mass and I also don't care for this. I do believe that churchgoers should know their faith well.

(like for instance the JW do - even though it's wrong, they do know what their church teaches)

I think you go out of your way to do that. I have a friend who is very clever but acts stupid as he wants people to laugh at him and think hes stupid. If someone syas he dumb he likes that knowing there wrong
ah, i'm not as sharp as him i guess, mild Asperger's so more socially clueless there i guess? I am just picking up on that as a tactic myself, and imo it is useful sometimes, and certainly non-confrontational, yes?

i dunno if "dumb" is a very healthy conclusion to reach, imo it is more useful for gauging who you're dealing with without judging them, i mean figuratively speaking i am not interested in roasting little children for not understanding "stay here for the present," or laughing at a bird bc they are not grasping the importance of turtle shell maintenance, so to speak?

but honest i'm not really doing that on purpose, except i was told to not write some stuff down clear, mostly Paul i guess right now

The churches that I've been a member of or attended regularly were always those with a Pastor who taught scripture verse by verse with one notable exception (that particular church now no longer exists.) Understanding the meaning of scripture is essential to putting it to application and to building our faith (faith comes by hearing the word of God.)
Also, when the devil or one of his "minions" comes to us with accusations, we should have scripture hidden away in our hearts and minds to bring to our defense as Christ used the scripture against Satan while being tempted in the wilderness.
While there is value in hearing teachers with a congregation, that can never compare to spending time in the word with God, the Holy Spirit, the closest fellowship you can have with the Lord other than in prayer. It's an awesome thing to be taught by God and it's a free gift that comes to His adopted children for the asking, along with wisdom in the application of His word. That's why I don't place much stock in scholarship; The Pharisees were scholarly, but still missed seeing the Lord for who He was.

I believe reading the bible in meditation is prayer.
There are different kinds of prayer.

When I first got saved and had never read the bible, I knew absolutely nothing about it. I got to know Jesus first.

Then I started reading and it was causing a problem.
Mathew 15:26
New American Standard Bible
And He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."

What could that possibly mean? It sounded so mean of Jesus.
Lucky for me I considered Him my friend by then and was more than sure that it didn't mean anything terrible.

So this would be one reason to have some scholarly scholarship !
If someone tells you something, it will never be too shocking or terrible because it won't be something new and you'll have an answer for them.
As we are asked to do.

1 Peter 3:15

AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED,
15but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;

But, of course the schooling means nothing without the presence of the Holy Spirit.

I started reading scripture as a child at about the same time that I participated in my "1st Holy Communion" in the RCC. Some things were written plainly and were easy to understand, but when it came to the prophets and parables, I was often frustrated and confused. I loved the things that Jesus said, but couldn't relate Him to the God that ordered Israel to put the Caananites to "the ban." Many things in scripture seemed contradictory to me as well. When I finally understood and received the good news of salvation , when I committed my soul to Jesus ' care and my life to His service, at the age of 39, I spent 3 years just reading through scripture repeatedly from Genesis to the book of the Revelation and was delighted that the Lord just kept showing me Himself in the pages. Since that time I've never stopped reading the word for more than a few days at a time, and 22 years later the Lord is still opening my eyes to newer understanding and newer applications of His word. I don't spend as much time with prayer requests as I did when I was younger, but prayer is communication with God, so I'd agree that meditation upon His word with illumination by His Spirit is prayer, and prayer in which you receive understanding from Him without necessarily asking. I also just talk to the Lord quite a bit and try to thank Him for every good thing I encounter (and sometimes for the bad things as well as I trust that it's all working for good in the end.)
Thank you for your posts. I believe that you have a pretty mature understanding of the Lord and His way.

Then whats allthe lipstick refs.?? God luvs ya or HE don't/All this flinging chapters of ideas @ each other can't edify anything & confuses me ! I'm outa here ...
I hope you mean just this thread.
I'm not a mean person but I do get aggravated sometimes when persons say really silly things in a personal way when they don't even know me.
I'm Christian but I'm not perfect.

So instead of saying mean things, I tend to say sarcastic things.
I thought asking if the poster liked my lipstick color would lighten things up a bit. I do hope you know that's not really me up there and that's not really the color lipstick I wear?

Anyway, come back. You're pretty sarcastic yourself !!
I enjoy your posts.

Good post.
