I understand your final statement. In one of the Gospels when He enter's on the Donkey, it states that He wept, because He knew that they did not get it!
Hurt, yes, He was totally aware of what was about to be His Sacrifice, and the people did not see the Love He had for them, how far He was willing to go to redeem them!
