Forget about owning property. Pick up some pontoons, 55 gallon poly barrels, or some equivalent floatation and build on that. I've lived all over the country, and people do this all the time. There are next to nothing to pay in taxes for a pontoon boat or floating deck/boat house, etc. Find a nice spot, toss out your anchor and BAM you're living off grid for free. The vast majority of people who are already doing this are doing it because they couldn't afford to do it any other way. I did it for decades and still have a place on the water now as well. It doesn't take as much as people think. Prices have been dropping rapidly as technology advances. Solar voltaic systems are dirt cheap nowadays. You can get started with a cheap system that could last you a few years, maybe even a decade or more, but you'll be purchasing a better one in no time just because you can with all the money you save by not having any bills, taxes, etc. to pay anymore.Owning property to live off grid is my problem
I moved onto my first boat when I was in my mid 20's, and loved it. No rent, no bills, and lots of time to do whatever I pleased.
