That's the Christian's answer.
Actually that's Ducky's answer but it's ok that you don't know. Next time just try to be honest.

The English word "bible" is derived from the Latin word biblia which is from the Greek word biblia and it simply means "books"

A little more FYI Ducky your definition "Genesis through Revelation" of the Christian bible, is very nondescript. How many books does your definition include?

Why did God give us the Bible?

What is the purpose of this important book?

Is knowledge of the Bible necessary for salvation? If so, how much?

Dos the Bible prove anything? What is 'prooftexting' why is it intellectually unsatisfying?

Hi aspen again...I am trying to catch up with your level of posts....(joke).

Without the Holy Bible, and in particular the New Testament, Jesus' specific acts would have been lost to us. So we can safely say that this book is the inspired word of Almighty God written, via the Holy Spirit, for the purpose of conveying his message through the generations. It really is important though for another reason too. Written between its lines there is a message that is felt by those who value it, and which guides us, but which wouldn't be fully understood until this modern age....when science , which often condemns the Holy Bible, will serve prove its validity.

The word bible simply means books and that is what it is like we can have a bible of car service manuals etc.
With the Holy Bible one should know the back ground to it.

I don't know about that as to you saying wouldn't be fully understood ? it was, but it's just things are being revealed mainly.

Very true Prentis.
The letter kills but the Spirit brings life (notice the upper case S).

I think the scriptures prove and explain a lot of things concerning earth and human history and also about the God. But knowledge of the scriptures is very much like knowledge of world sociology yet never leaving your own country and experiencing the other cultures,it is not experiential and thus just virtual.

To know and obey the scriptures is not the same as to know and obey HolySpirit. One is carnal the other is spiritual, one is virtual the other is real. Knowing and obeying the scriptures does not make one spiritual nor does it produce spiritual growth. The pharisees knew and obeyed the scriptures yet Jesus said they were blind and misguided. Paul knew the scriptures and lived by them. He said he did it so well that no one could find any fault with him yet he said it was all worthless.

Those who's knowledge of God is dependent on the scriptures is the same as one who knows George Bush by reading his biography, the relationship is virtual and lacks intimacy.

Amen jiggyfly! :)

We have fooled ourselves into thinking we can build a tower to God using our own knowledge... It is foolishness. We need God to show us and lead us in the here and now if we are to be of any effect in his kingdom and of any edification unto the body.

Wow.... Another thread meant to question the Bible's authority. I'll sit this one out and let you folks "walk in the spirit"... (notice the lower case "s")....

And questioning The Holy Bible's authority is exactly what this thread has been about so far...

2 Tim 3:16-17
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
(KJV)

2 Pet 1:20-21
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
(KJV)

Rom 15:4
4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
(KJV)

2 Pet 3:1-2
1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
(KJV)

The "crept in unawares" false prophets in many of today's Churches cannot succeed in trying to replace The Holy Spirit with their false spirit unless they first get a deceived Christian to put The Bible that was written through The Holy Spirit on a shelf. All a devout Christian need do is study The Bible to be able to discern those false prophets trying to substitute The Holy Spirit working with another spirit.

There needs to be a balance between the written word and the Word Himself. One is truth, the other is Truth. As veteran has pointed out, the Bible is inspired. We can be taught by the Holy Spirit as we read the Bible, yet we can also be taught by the Holy Spirit by reading another book, or by speaking to someone, through a teaching, etc. The Bible points us to the Spirit and it tells us to walk in the Spirit. The problem arises when we see the Bible as God Himself, God does not live in a book, He lives in us, very similar to when people believe God lives in a building called a "church", and not in us.

We need both and as we read the written word, we get pointed to Him, and as we are pointed to Him, we learn to walk in the Spirit. Our experiences with God can not always be found in the Bible, those experiences are someone else's, and as we follow the Lord's leading, what He leads us to do, may not be found in the Bible either. Each one of us will be taken on a different journey, none will be the same, so the Bible is a good tool for us, and the Spirit is the perfect leader.

God bless you all!

Amen, brother!

The Bible is full of wonders... That the Spirit opens up to us! :)

Proverbs 25:[sup]2[/sup] It is the glory of God to conceal a matter,
But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
The mysteries of God are hidden, concealed, revealed by the Spirit to those who seek!
