When the Catholic Church dominated Europe, compelling obedience to papal authority under pain of excommunication and even death, joining with the state to subdue dissent, various church leaders, many of them highly educated but taught in the schools of Rome, discovered the scriptures and read them without reference to their tutors and past education. They rose up at different times, and became enlightened regarding different truths previously obscured or ignored, and present lies and superstitions that weren't biblical. These reformers didn't all agree with one another. They inherited certain doctrines they should have discarded, and retained attitudes that would later be revealed as untenable...such as the penchant for compulsion and church authority to control conscience.
The Danbury Baptists, around the turn of the 17th century, presented Jefferson with a very large cheese in gratitude for the religious liberty afforded the people of the United States as written in the first amendment. That separation of church and state was what made the United States great. It is so very sad, not just for the United States, but for the world, that the current leaders of so many of those protestant denominations are ignoring or deliberately setting aside the profound differences between Catholicism and Protestantism, and seeking to join with Rome in a false unity based on deception and perceived common interests. The union of church and state now becoming more and more likely in the very near future, repudiating and setting aside the very constitution and bill of rights that guaranteed liberty of conscience, will bring bondage and suffering to Christians throughout the land, will bring national ruin in finances and morality, and be far more devastating to the welfare of the church than the differences and/or acceptance of the doctrines expressed above. Just sayin'.
