Calvin Said That the Apostle’s Question in Acts 1:6 Was Foolish. Was it?
Kind of depends on what you understand Calvin to be saying by "foolish." Basically, they're asking a question that He had just, many times over in the course of the previous three years, shown to be borne of little understanding. In that sense it was foolish. And that's what Calvin was saying. Yeah, the passage of time, even five centuries, does not render something untrue, but reading something written in the 15th century as if it was written yesterday and not understanding the antiquated language of 500 years ago can certainly bring about a wrong understanding, and that seems to be your mistake here.

Grace and peace to you.

Jesus's brothers were all of Joseph and born of Mary.

Jacob had four wives, not twelve. None of them were virgins. Jacob was quite busy. :) And so was Joseph, after Jesus was born... :D

Grace and peace to you.

Brothers and sisters of Jesus?

They are not the children of Mary!

Is 7:14 a virgin shall conceive and bear a son!
(One son, singular)

James is the son of zebedee, and the other James is the son of Alpheus not Joseph!
Matt 10:2-3

In Hebrew culture any close relative can be called brother or sister, lot was called Abraham’s brother but was his nephew.

Gen 12:5 and Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son..

Gen 13:8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdsmen and thy herdsmen; for we are Brothers.

The 12 sons of Jacob are brothers but all are not the children of Leah and all are not the children of Rachel! They had 4 mother’s, These may be brothers but they are simply not the children of One mother and the brothers of Jesus are not the children of Mary!

Jose’s, Simon Salome are children of another Mary!

Mk 15:40 There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;

Is Mary the mother of James?
If you mean the Blessed Virgin Mary then no. Her sister-in-law, Mary of Clopas, was the wife of Alphaeus (St. Joseph's brother), and mother of Simon, Joseph, and the apostles Judas Thaddeus, and James (the Less, brother of the Lord): Jesus' cousins.

The "sisters" of Jesus refer to women disciples

Salome, or Mary Salome, was the wife of Zebedee, and mother of apostles John (the beloved), and James (the greater).

Regarding Mat. 13:55 and Mk. 6:3, two of the four "brethren" are James and Judas of Alphaeus (cf. Mat. 10:2-3, Lk. 6:15-16, Act. 1:13). The third, Joseph, is identified in Mk. 15:40 as the brother of James of Alphaeus. The fourth, Simon, is identified in Mat. 13:55 and Mk. 6:3 as the brother of Joseph, James, and Judas of Alphaeus. Therefore, all four are were the sons of Alphaeus, not St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

When Jesus was twelve they went up to Jerusalem, the holy family, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. Where are the brothers and sisters?

Jesus on the cross gives His mother to John, why? Why not James or a brother? Perhaps the law of Moses requires a mother to be given to the next oldest son? Because he was an only Son!
Only begotten of the Father, only begotten of the Mother.

Only God can be born of a Virgin-mother!

And lk 1:34 no sex period

Did Mary mother of Jesus have other children with her husband Joseph?
Yes,
Matthew 1:24-25
Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife.
And did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.

Joseph was directly commanded by Gods messenger to have sexual intercourse with his wife Mary mother of Jesus.
Did not know her, is figurative phrase for sex with his wife after Jesus was born.

Yes, and while she was a virgin, she did conceive and bear this one son, even Jesus. Isaiah never implies that she will only have one son.

Right. Agree. But after Jesus was born, Mary quite obviously conceived several times by earthly means (not of the Holy Spirit).

Hey, believe what you want, my friend. Believe what you want.

LOL! Well I surely agree with your "Yes," here, Titus, but... The angel did not command (directly or otherwise) Joseph to "have sexual intercourse with Mary"... LOL! The exhortation from the angel was to not be afraid to take Mary as his wife.

Well, unless you want to say that Joseph heeded God's command to Adam, and thus to all humanity, to "be fruitful and multiply." If that's what you mean, then I'm fully with you on that... Joseph certainly knew what it meant to take Mary for his wife and all the ramifications therein.

LOL!

Wow. The things that come up on this board... :)

Nope! Lk 1:34 I know no man no sex period

Mary is perpetual virgin

Mary conceived "without any detriment to her virginity, which remained inviolate even after his birth" (apostolic Council of the Lateran, 649) with the jurisdictional authority of Peter and the apostles in holy council! Matt 16:18 18:18 Jn 20:21-23 eph 2:20 bound on earth bound in heaven!

The Bible never says anyone is a biological child of Mary accept for Jesus Christ!

And the Bible says Her child is holy! And Her child is God!

Is 7:14 God provides a sign, a Virgin shall conceive and bear a son! (Singular, one son)

Ezekiel 44:2 “This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it; for the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered by it; therefore it shall remain shut.”

Song of Solomon 4:12 A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.

(Mary had become the temple & dwelling place of the Almighty, like the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament. Mary was a vessel consecrated to God alone?)

Matt 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

(The Bible says only the Holy Ghost conceived in Mary)

Matt 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.
(A son singular) (only Jesus is savior)

Lk 1:28 Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee!

Blessed art thou amongst all women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
(The fruit of Her womb is blessed and holy)

Lk 1:31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
(A son, singular)

Lk 1:34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
(This verse imply’s a vow of perpetual virginity, She refuses even the exalted dignity of mother of God and mother of our savior if it means violating Her vow of perpetual virginity)

Lk 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
(Her son is God)

Matt 1:25 He knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.

2 Samuel 6:23 tells us: Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child UNTIL the day of her death.

Are we to assume that Michal had children after she died?

Until only states that they had no relation up to that point, the Bible does not say they had sex ever, before or after that point!

Lk 1:34 no sex ever!

First born does not imply a second born. An only child is still first born!

The Bible says Joseph a just and therefore a chaste man, it does not say he has gone into Mary anywhere in scripture, 2 Sam 12:24 And David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the Lord loved him. Never says this about a Joseph, for He was full of fear and reverence for Her immaculate purity and holiness! Especially after hearing from an angel that her child was of the Holy Spirit! Joseph was full of joy to be the guardian of Mary and her purity!

Isa 66:7 Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child.

8 Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

9 Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the Lord: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? saith thy God.

10 Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her:

11 That ye may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.

12 For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees.

13 As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem

Adam and Eve were married in the garden but did not have sex, marriage is made by consent not sex!

St Augustine, Sermons 186.1 (early 5th century):

“In being born of a Virgin who chose to remain a Virgin even before she knew who was to be born of her, Christ wanted to approve virginity rather than to impose it. And he wanted virginity to be of free choice even in that woman in whom he took upon himself the form of a slave” (Holy Virginity 4:4 [A.D. 401]).

“It was not the visible sun, but its invisible Creator who consecrated this day for us, when the Virgin Mother, fertile of womb and integral in her virginity, brought him forth, made visible for us, by whom, when he was invisible, she too was created. A Virgin conceiving, a Virgin bearing, a Virgin pregnant, a Virgin bringing forth, a Virgin perpetual. Why do you wonder at this, O man?” (Sermons 186:1 [A.D. 411]).

“Heretics called Antidicomarites are those who contradict the perpetual virginity of Mary and affirm that after Christ was born she was joined as one with her husband” (Heresies 56 [A.D. 428]).

St Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica, III.28.3 (13th century):

"Without any hesitation we must abhor the error of Helvidius, who dared to assert that Christ's Mother, after His Birth, was carnally known by Joseph, and bore other children.

For, in the first place, this is derogatory to Christ's perfection: for as He is in His Godhead the Only-Begotten of the Father, being thus His Son in every respect perfect, so it was becoming that He should be the Only-begotten son of His Mother, as being her perfect offspring.

“Secondly, this error is an insult to the Holy Ghost, whose "shrine" was the virginal womb, wherein He had formed the flesh of Christ: wherefore it was unbecoming that it should be desecrated by intercourse with man.

“Thirdly, this is derogatory to the dignity and holiness of God's Mother: for thus she would seem to be most ungrateful, were she not content with such a Son; and were she, of her own accord, by carnal intercourse to forfeit that virginity which had been miraculously preserved in her.

“Fourthly, it would be tantamount to an imputation of extreme presumption in Joseph, to assume that he attempted to violate her whom by the angel's revelation he knew to have conceived by the Holy Ghost.

“We must therefore simply assert that the Mother of God, as she was a virgin in conceiving Him and a virgin in giving Him birth, did she remain a virgin ever afterwards."

The blessed Mary mother of God, is a perpetual virgin to the glory of God!

Hey, believe what you want, my friend. Believe what you want.

Grace and peace to you.

so according to you it ok to use the ark of the covenant as a common dinner table and it’s ok to have a rock and roll dance in the holy of holies?

Ark of the New Covenant!

Mary, ever virgin, mother of God!

Ex 40:34 Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

Lk 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

2 Sam 6:2 And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the Lord of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims.

Lk 1:39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

2 Sam 6:3 And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart.

4 And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.

5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.

2 Sam 6:16 And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord;

Lk 1:41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

2 Sam 6:9 And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and said, How shall the ark of the Lord come to me?

Lk 1:42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

2 Sam 6:11 And the ark of the Lord continued in the house of Obededom the Gittite three months: and the Lord blessed Obededom, and all his household.

Lk 1:56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

2 Sam 6:12 And it was told king David, saying, The Lord hath blessed the house of Obededom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness.

Lk 1:41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

Lk 1: 67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying…

Ark of the new covenant!
The dwelling place of God!
God dwelt in Mary’s womb for 9 months, remember the ark was incorruptible wood covered with pure gold signifying Mary’s immaculate purity!
read exodus or any place in the Old Testament where something came into contact with God or was consecrated to the service of God it had to be pure and Holy!
And cannot be used for any common purpose!
In the ark was the word of God!
In Mary the new ark is the living Word!
In the ark was the mana!
In Mary was the bread come down from heaven! Jn 6
Bethlehem means house of bread!

Lk 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Matt 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, (Isa 7:14) and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Jn 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Holy mother of God!

Lk 1:28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

Biblical principle:
Anything Consecrated to God must be pure and used only for the purpose of serving God!

See exodus: the ark of the covenant, everything used in the temple etc.

Ezekiel 44:2 “This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it; for the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered by it; therefore it shall remain shut.”

So Joseph cannot enter in where the Holy Spirit has entered!

Song of Solomon 4:12 A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.

(Mary had become the dwelling place of the Almighty, like the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament. Mary was a vessel consecrated to God alone?)

Isa 66:9 Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the Lord: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? saith thy God.

Mary and her virginity are Consecrated to God in immaculate purity, the pure gold of divine love!

Mary was the dwelling place of the Almighty, like the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament. Mary was a vessel consecrated to God alone!

Can a man use the ark of the covenant for a common dinner table?

Then Joseph can in no any way use Mary for a common wife!

No mere man may enter where God conceived! Ez 44:2

Mary would not consent to God’s will and to receive the exalted dignity of the mother of God if it means violating her vow of perpetual virginity then why simply consent relations with Joseph!

That’s impossible!

Lk 1:34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

(This verse imply’s that Mary is consecrated to God alone! and has taken a vow of perpetual virginity! She was s willing to refuse even the exalted dignity of mother of God, the mother of our savior, and mother of all Christians if it means violating Her vow of perpetual virginity)

Lk 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

She consented to our salvation when she realized it would not violate her vow of perpetual virginity!

Mary was the dwelling place of the Almighty, like the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament. Mary was a vessel consecrated to God alone!

A consecrated virgin must be pure, immaculate, and permanent!

All for God!

Mary cos of Her being created by God immaculate (Lk 1:49) has always enjoyed the beatific vision of God in heaven, (Matt 5:8) Her intense, pure, and perfect love of God caused Her to make a sacrifice of her entire being and life to God Forever!
Lk 1:46

A good tree!

Matthew 7:18
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

The fruit of the tree of Mary is our salvation! Lk 2:30 Jesus is our salvation!
Lk 1:30 Mary found our salvation!

Pinseeker, the angel of the Lord commanded Joseph not to be afraid of sex with his wife?
So, according to you if Joseph had not ever had sex with Mary, he had obeyed the commandment of the Lord.
Just by not being afraid of sex with Mary.

No. Do you think it is right for a married couple to not have the physical needs of the body be met?
Folks marry for many reasons.
One reason to marry is so that the natural desire for sex is met.

1Corinthians 7:9
But if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

LOL! The exhortation from the angel was to not be afraid to take Mary as his wife.

Wrong Pinseeker.
Joseph was already Married to Mary,
Matthew 1:19
Then Joseph her husband being just a man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.

Put her away secretly means divorce her.

So your interpretation of the command that God gave Joseph Mary's husband is unbiblical.

Read it again,
Matthew 1:24
Then Joseph, being asleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him His wife.

Joseph was commanded to have sex with his wife.

Lk 1:34 I know no man no sex period...
Yes, she had known no man to that point, so, knowing how women become pregnant... :)... she asked Gabriel, "How will I be pregnant, since I have known no man?" To be precise, upon Gabriel's statement that Mary would "conceive in (her) womb and bear a son," Mary, very firmly in the present tense, asks Gabriel, "How will this be, since I am a virgin?"

Mary is perpetual virgin
No. Jesus was the only her only birth conceived by the Spirit. After that, after Jesus was born, though, she gave birth to other children, and thus could not have still been a virgin. :)

Mary conceived "without any detriment to her virginity..."
Up through the time of Jesus's birth, yes. No one disagrees with this.

..."which remained inviolate even after his birth" (apostolic Council of the Lateran, 649)
Very Catholic, and very wrong. There is nothing in the Bible that even insinuates this.

The Bible never says anyone is a biological child of Mary accept for Jesus Christ!
So, all her other children were robots? Or plastic toys? Or... adopted? What? :) But yes, no other child born of Mary was conceived by the Holy Spirit, for sure.

And the Bible says Her child is holy! And Her child is God!
Sure. Absolutely. And her other children were not. And neither was she, by the way. :)

so according to you it ok to use the ark of the covenant as a common dinner table and it’s ok to have a rock and roll dance in the holy of holies?
LOL! Wow. Do Catholics really think Mary was the personification of the ark of the covenant? Really? My goodness... :)

Grace and peace to you.

Joseph was already Married to Mary,
Matthew 1:19
Then Joseph her husband being just a man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.
Ah... let's get the timeline right:

Matthew 1:18 ~ the verse immediately preceding the one you quote here ~ says, "When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together..." ~ before they were married ~ "...she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit." So of the time point we are speaking ~ when she became pregnant with Jesus ~ she was not yet married to Joseph, but only betrothed to him. In this day and age, we tend to only think of divorce as the legal dissolution of a marriage by a court or other competent body. But it can also mean ~ and does there in Matthew ~ to separate or dissociate (something) from something else. Joseph, at that point, realizing that Mary was pregnant, resolved to dissociate himself of Mary's betrothal to him to be his wife. To that point, there was no marriage.

Read it again...
Yeah, right back atcha. :)

Joseph was commanded to have sex with his wife.
Nope. Not only is sex only a... ramification... of marriage, Mary was not yet his wife. See above.

Put her away secretly means divorce her.
Right, but see above.

So your interpretation of the command that God gave Joseph Mary's husband is unbiblical.
Far be it from me to deprive you of your opinion, mistaken as it may be.

Grace and peace to you.

Calvin Said That the Apostle’s Question in Acts 1:6 Was Foolish. Was it?

As part of Calvin’s commentary on this verse he writes:
He showeth that the apostles were gathered together when as this question was moved, that we may know that it came not of the foolishness of one or two that it was moved, but it was moved by the common consent of them all; but marvelous is their rudeness, that when as they had been diligently instructed by the space of three whole years, they betray no less ignorance than if they had heard never a word. There are as many errors in this question as words.

It's you whom do not know who they follow.... Your Calvin... having the nerve to call the very ones whom lived with Jesus ignorant of his teachings!
Really, I can't make this $ht up.... Calvin was the A hole of his time.... and Servetus was a victim of this man!!! If Calvin calls the Apostles idiots... what do you think he would have done to a man whom wrote against his teaching/beliefs.

Liberal murderer, much like today!!! Calvin hater...please! Calvin was the Church LGBT of his day...
Paul
The real ignorance in this post is you taking Calvin out of context. The Apostles had been told repeatedly by Christ that his kingdom was not of this world. That was Calvin's point. They were still expecting an earthly takeover but that was not the purpose. So yes, in that sense they were being ignorant, meaning, they ignored his teachings.

No. Jesus was the only her only birth conceived by the Spirit. After that, after Jesus was born, though, she gave birth to other children, and thus could not have still been a virgin. :)

Up through the time of Jesus's birth, yes. No one disagrees with this.

Very Catholic, and very wrong. There is nothing in the Bible that even insinuates this.

So, all her other children were robots? Or plastic toys? Or... adopted? What? :) But yes, no other child born of Mary was conceived by the Holy Spirit, for sure.

Sure. Absolutely. And her other children were not. And neither was she, by the way. :)

LOL! Wow. Do Catholics really think Mary was the personification of the ark of the covenant? Really? My goodness... :)

Grace and peace to you.

never said she was God

no the ark is actually a type of Mary not the other way around

Mary is the temple of God, God consecrated and dwelt in this temple for 9 months and it cannot be used for a ordinary purpose,

Lk 1:39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

2 Sam 6:16 And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord;

You can't possibly know this.

why not?

It’s in the Bible!

gen 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

marrige!

Gen 4:1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.

No sex in the garden!
