Calvin Said That the Apostle’s Question in Acts 1:6 Was Foolish. Was it?

Kind of depends on what you understand Calvin to be saying by "foolish." Basically, they're asking a question that He had just, many times over in the course of the previous three years, shown to be borne of little understanding. In that sense it was foolish. And that's what Calvin was saying. Yeah, the passage of time, even five centuries, does not render something untrue, but reading something written in the 15th century as if it was written yesterday and not understanding the antiquated language of 500 years ago can certainly bring about a wrong understanding, and that seems to be your mistake here.

If you mean the Blessed Virgin Mary then no. Her sister-in-law, Mary of Clopas, was the wife of Alphaeus (St. Joseph's brother), and mother of Simon, Joseph, and the apostles Judas Thaddeus, and James (the Less, brother of the Lord): Jesus' cousins.

The "sisters" of Jesus refer to women disciples

Salome, or Mary Salome, was the wife of Zebedee, and mother of apostles John (the beloved), and James (the greater).


Regarding Mat. 13:55 and Mk. 6:3, two of the four "brethren" are James and Judas of Alphaeus (cf. Mat. 10:2-3, Lk. 6:15-16, Act. 1:13). The third, Joseph, is identified in Mk. 15:40 as the brother of James of Alphaeus. The fourth, Simon, is identified in Mat. 13:55 and Mk. 6:3 as the brother of Joseph, James, and Judas of Alphaeus. Therefore, all four are were the sons of Alphaeus, not St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

When Jesus was twelve they went up to Jerusalem, the holy family, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. Where are the brothers and sisters?

Jesus on the cross gives His mother to John, why? Why not James or a brother? Perhaps the law of Moses requires a mother to be given to the next oldest son? Because he was an only Son!
Only begotten of the Father, only begotten of the Mother.

Are we to assume that Michal had children after she died?

Until only states that they had no relation up to that point, the Bible does not say they had sex ever, before or after that point!

Never says this about a Joseph, for He was full of fear and reverence for Her immaculate purity and holiness! Especially after hearing from an angel that her child was of the Holy Spirit! To be precise, upon Gabriel's statement that Mary would "conceive in (her) womb and bear a son," Mary, very firmly in the present tense, asks Gabriel, "How will this be, since I am a virgin?"

Ah... let's get the timeline right:

Matthew 1:18 ~ the verse immediately preceding the one you quote here ~ says, "When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together..." ~ before they were married ~ "...she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit." So of the time point we are speaking ~ when she became pregnant with Jesus ~ she was not yet married to Joseph, but only betrothed to him. In this day and age, we tend to only think of divorce as the legal dissolution of a marriage by a court or other competent body. But it can also mean ~ and does there in Matthew ~ to separate or dissociate (something) from something else. Joseph, at that point, realizing that Mary was pregnant, resolved to dissociate himself of Mary's betrothal to him to be his wife. To that point, there was no marriage.

Calvin Said That the Apostle’s Question in Acts 1:6 Was Foolish. Was it?

As part of Calvin’s commentary on this verse he writes:
He showeth that the apostles were gathered together when as this question was moved, that we may know that it came not of the foolishness of one or two that it was moved, but it was moved by the common consent of them all; but marvelous is their rudeness, that when as they had been diligently instructed by the space of three whole years, they betray no less ignorance than if they had heard never a word. There are as many errors in this question as words.

It's you whom do not know who they follow.... Your Calvin... having the nerve to call the very ones whom lived with Jesus ignorant of his teachings!

The real ignorance in this post is you taking Calvin out of context. The Apostles had been told repeatedly by Christ that his kingdom was not of this world. That was Calvin's point. They were still expecting an earthly takeover but that was not the purpose. So yes, in that sense they were being ignorant, meaning, they ignored his teachings.

No. Jesus was the only her only birth conceived by the Spirit. After that, after Jesus was born, though, she gave birth to other children, and thus could not have still been a virgin.

Mary is the temple of God, God consecrated and dwelt in this temple for 9 months and it cannot be used for a ordinary purpose,

God dwelt in Mary’s womb for 9 months, remember the ark was incorruptible wood covered with pure gold signifying Mary’s immaculate purity!
read exodus or any place in the Old Testament where something came into contact with God or was consecrated to the service of God it had to be pure and Holy!
And cannot be used for any common purpose!
In the ark was the word of God!
In Mary the new ark is the living Word!
In the ark was the mana!

Biblical principle:
Anything Consecrated to God must be pure and used only for the purpose of serving God!

See exodus: the ark of the covenant, everything used in the temple etc.

Ezekiel 44:2 “This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it; for the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered by it; therefore it shall remain shut.”

So Joseph cannot enter in where the Holy Spirit has entered!
