I'm starting a low carb diet today to see if I can loose some of my belly fat.
That means no rice, no pasta, no potatoes, no bread, not even fruit.

It's a daunting prospect as I tend to eat all those things. The only good thing is that I can eat more meat but I have to now eat stuff like broccoli and cauliflower which I don't really like.
It's also going to be more expensive cos bread, rice, potatoes and pasta are cheap compared to the low carb alternatives.

Work lunch was my biggest concern. I used to take a roll with cheese, ham, tomato and boiled egg. Now I'm replacing the roll with low carb pita bread wraps. Sometimes I would take a pack of instant noodles, but I can't do that anymore. Maybe I can take a tuna salad with canned tuna

For dinner I'll have a bigger portion of meat with broccoli and/or cauliflower or something else, I'm still searching for.

Have you been on a low carb diet, or any other diet? How did it go?

I'm open to suggestions if anyone has been on a low carb diet

You won't regret it. The benefits of ketosis are many.

If you're concerned about cost, try going toward a carnivore diet. You'll save tons of money not buying all the "keto-friendly" and "low-carb" products. You'll save money not having fruits and veggies going bad in the fridge before it cam be eaten.

I do advise, though, not to get caught up in the low-carb desserts and breads. It's a money trap and a carb trap. If you're doing keto/low carb, make sure you're staying under 30 total carbs per day (not "net carbs").

I posted a video the other day on the proven benefits of eating 20-30grams of protein per meal.

If you're curious about carnivore at all, @Wynona has a thread on it.

I went on a low carb/keto diet and it nearly ruined my thyroid. I gained loads of weight that I cannot get off from it. I was also intermittent fasting.

It is not as easy as some say.

I have Hashimotos - immune attack on my thyroid. No meds as I won't take steroids to enable it as I have Lyme as well.

I guess different things work for different people. I hope my body deals with it ok.

Under 30 grams of carbs a day... Geez.
I was aiming to go under 50 grams a day. That's what I was told and that's what I'll start off with. Maybe I'll move onto 30g eventually.

I've already noticed the price of keto chocolate was ridiculous.

Your suggesting going full carnivore. Like a lion. I love the sound of that. Just meats. I love meats. I don't know much about it but I'll look into it.

First let's just try this keto diet for a few months and see what happens. It could work or my body might reject it. We'll see.

Do your research first. Quite a few on that forum say keto ruined their health.

Keto doesn't ruin one's health. If they've already destroyed their health with bad eating and then go keto, they may be eating too many foods with high oxalates, which will increase inflammation and cause skin and joint problems. (On "keto" most of your options are high in oxalates.)

For me, keto worked for 6 years ...but then my body decided I'd had too many huge salads and stopped digesting food. I've had a lifetime of trauma. Those almond flour foods, and almond milk, 2 gigantic salads a day, and very little protein (bc I couldn't afford meat) ...wrecked my digestive system and my hair was falling out, skin problems, etc.

When I HAD to stop eating veggies, carnivore was my best option. (The salads were literally passing through my body in 20 minutes, whole.) I started with bone broth and blended chuck roast and a bit of collagen powder, salt, garlic powder into it. It was delicious! But my body was finally getting the most bioavailabile nutrients.

I used digestive enzymes and bitter herbs to help my body produce bile again. And after a few months, I slowly eased into whole meats. At first I couldn't eat chicken or bacon without a histamine response.

I mostly eat beef now ....usually grass fed. But I was wrong about affordability. I actually save money and time now bc I'm not buying all the keto stuff. I eat scrambled eggs and burger patties ...or chuck roast, or a ribeye.

I only need to eat one meal a day, but I will sometimes blend some electrolytes and iodine into raw heavy cream ...maybe some creatine and grass fed beef collagen powder, and it blends right up to a thick consistency ...then I add plain Greek yogurt. Yum!

Those problems start well before keto, and then when you go keto, you start eating more high oxalate foods, and then you have problems. I've learned that when your body has been wrecked with trauma, stress, and decades of bad eating ....going keto isn't the answer because of the oxalate load. And neither is a lot of fasting. Your body is starved for nutrients. The most bioavailabile nutrients come from animal proteins and fats. The "low fat" craze has set people up for hormone imbalance, and brain-related conditions like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Schizophrenia, Bipolar, depression, dementia, ADD, ADHD, etc, etc, etc. The brain needs cholesterol to function. It is mostly made up of FAT. So high fat carnivore is what most people need, at least for a time, in order for the body to heal and restore.

Carnivore is what has helped my body recover from trauma. God has given us food as medicine. I eat other stuff on occasion ...but I have to limit ot because then my body lets me know (skin rashes, digestive issues, inflammation, etc).

@TLHKAJ

Before I went to low carb, I was eating a very good diet, organic whole foods, grass fed beef with fat, ghee etc. I was already low oxylate and kept it down.

The thyroid needs carbs if the body is not converting T4 very well.

I increased fruit but that caused problems. I have never gone low fat and have severe trauma and AuDHD.

The folk on the forum I have quoted are very nutritionally aware. Thee is no such thing as one diet suits all.

That's true. But God created our bodies to run optimally on specific nutritional components.

I would venture to say that your history of trauma is at the root of a lot of what you're experiencing. Most (if not all) the people I know who've survived trauma from early childhood end up with autoimmune, severe inflammation, gut and digestive issues, all sorts of "unexplained " conditions .... fibromyalgia, lupus, Hashimotos, etc.

My thyroid was shot, always swelling, painful, couldn't take anything with iodine in it. It was affecting my eyes. But now, I can take 5 drops of lugol's iodine in a day with no issues.

I'm not pushing you, sis. Just maybe try not to discourage someone else from doing something that may be the thing their bidy needs. He'll be able to know for himself once he gives it a good solid try. We all have to tweak things for our individual needs. ❤️

We have to do what's best for our own individual body.

I am sure that trauma has left its mark on my body. No doubt, and I would not now be 76 on no meds were it not for my dietary tweaking the last 40 years.

I knew an allopathic turned naturopath who pushes keto because it worked for her but some very sick people who get on Ray Peat's forum became much worse despite having non conventional extensive nutritional knowledge.

People should have the chance to check if they could be one of these unfortunate ones before they think it will definitely help them.

I'm a big fan of low carb diets. I was on carnivore for multi-month stints. My skin glowed. I lost weight. My hormones balanced. It did really well for me. My husband lost over 70 pounds. Now Im no longer on keto or carnivore but I still benefit from the way carnivore broke my addiction to sugar and emotional eating. It's worth trying for at least three months.

On carnivore, I used animal fat and fatty meat for energy. Ketosis felt amazing! I still add beef tallow to my tea every day because of the skin benefits.

I currently still have energy all day. I struggled with fatigue in the past.

Brave lady! I've never tried tallow in tea! But I do have it in my raw cream+plain Greek yogurt smoothies. I also add powdered unflavored grass fed bone broth to my smoothies. The texture is amazingly smooth! Yes, it is amazing for the skin!

Yes, I agree. So your input is valuable, no doubt. Everyone has their unique needs.

Keto and carnivore aren't the same. Both are ketogenic (teaching the body to run on fats rather than carbs). But many find carnivore, or ketovore (like, 95-99% animal based) superior to having a significant amount of plants in the diet. I'm one of those and I know of many others.

It's just worth a try. @Armour of God says they want to do it for weightloss. Carnivore will do that in short order. They just may find so many other benefits (like muscle tone, improved sleep, more energy, less brain fog, age reversal, etc) that they don't want to stop at 30 or 60 days. When I add any significant amount of plants back in my diet (like holidays with the kids and grandbabies) I pay for it for weeks after with gut issues, skin rashes, etc.
