I would find it easier to believe that he was emotionally manipulated to pretend he wasn't gay. It's basic "reparative therapy"

We taught our children to love Jesus and His law, so when he told us he thought he might be gay, we knew immediately that the best thing we could do was be supportive, give him space, pray, and wait. We were determined to maintain our policy of standards in the macro and compassion in the micro (before we even knew that way of stating the policy).
He had already begun to express leftist political sentiments and there was absolutely no pressure from us to reform. And he never gets out of the house except for doctor's appointments, so the possibility of him being influenced to seek basic "reparative therapy" seems unlikely, at best.
When he told the other young man that he thought he might not be gay, he was immediately ghosted.
What started the whole thing was that he was so moved by the man's (likely quite legitimate) testimony of having formerly been abused and discriminated against that he experienced deep compassion, unlike anything he ever had before. This, he later realized (without any influence from us) he had mistaken for romantic love. He still cares about the other young man, so he keeps tabs on him the best he can. The man was shortly after arrested for possession of child pornography but it seems he might have been implicated simply by sharing a laptop with the actual perpetrator.
It should be interesting to see how you're going to puke all over this testimony. Perhaps you could surmise that my wife got him some basic "reparative therapy" behind my back or something, although him being as stubborn as the day is long would probably preclude such a theory. Anyway, you've already outed yourself as one who rejoices in iniquity and is heartbroken while angels rejoice over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:7).

This is interesting. I do think it's quite possible that we're being duped. I heard just yesterday, quite unsurprisingly, that there is actually training available to atheists who wish to infiltrate Christian forums. A conspiracy theory is only a theory until reasonable evidence is found for its validity, I guess. I'm taking it easy, per your advice, so I'm deferring my investigation into the matter.

Did you ever hear that the term ‘conspiracy theory’ came from the CIA in the 1950’s to dismiss those who observed their mischievous actions in foreign countries?
It really is slander, a type of Appeal to Ad Homenim - AS IF the object of discussion is beyond disrepute, dismissing all criticism by this throw away term.
That’s racist.

That’s bigotry.
That’s a conspiracy theory.
All the same fallacy.

Honestly, I am bewildered at how such things - void of actual Scriptural teaching - in Christianity generate such passion.

BTW, growing up Catholic it was explained why our society has 2 day weekends. Saturday, to keep the Sabbath holy. Sunday, to celebrate the Lord’s Day.

It has been documented extensively. There are even therapists beginning to specialize in helping men and women who have experienced such things.
Thinking logically about it, how would you convince someone into believing something they are not. the sort answer is you can't, but if you abuse someone bad enough over a period of time they will start saying anything you want in order to get you to stop.

Mindlessly going with the masses. When the majority is going one way, that’s a sure sign that is usually the wrong way.
It is love. You just have your poles reversed.
You cannot answer a question with a question. That you rely on a website to deny basic logic and psychology speaks volumes. Answering a Question With a Question - Psychological reasons for doing so?
It is an inertial aggressive behavior, even if it appears to have no obvious intention to manipulate.
Naturally when you answer a question with a question who asked a question remains in a passive-aggressive situation, and that’s not right. A ‘sincere’ question should be able to get the sincere answer it deserves.
