Morality is not just an obligation equal in importance to the cult or religious obligations of Israel, but that morality is perhaps superior to the cult. The crimes that are denounced as being utterly unacceptable to Yahweh, infuriating Yahweh to the point of destruction of the nation of Israel, are the kinds of crimes we see around us everyday, taking bribes, improper weights and balances, lack of charity to the poor, indifference to the plight of the debtor. Injustice is sacrilege, the ideals of the covenant are of utmost importance. Prophets were sent to Israel, these prophets are called the standard bearers of the covenant, harking back to the covenant obligations. And without these, without the ideals of the covenant, the fulfillment of ritual obligations in and of itself is a farce. What Yahweh requires of Israel is morality and not cultic service. The prophets raised morality to the level of an absolute religious value, and they did so because they saw morality as essentially divine. The essence of Yahweh is his moral nature. Moral attributes are the essence of Yahweh himself, one strives to be Yahweh-like by his moral actions. Oddly, the discussion of the necessity of morality has itself become immoral in modern American society.
If not immoral, then certainly a subject of humor and anecdote.
One cannot directly teach morality in school or require it in law.
(One can 'nudge' one's students toward the concept of morality, but one cannot teach it directly.)
The days are long gone when an American teacher or principal could enforce moral behavior by means of corporal punishment.
All human society has its basis in truth and some sort of moral code. When these things are abandoned, the society crashes.
We are seeing the destruction of the American civilization before our eyes and there is no way to reverse it because truth has been abandoned.
The united States government, which once stood between men and anarchy, is now the source of it.
American citizens no longer have confidence in the 'morality' of our leaders or of the ability of our own government to 'do the right thing'.
Our country is circling the drain and the last vestiges of fantasy about our pretended greatness are going the way of soap bubbles in the wind.
Only one question remains. What happens when everyone realizes that justice and freedom are gone from the land?

At no period in American history has our democracy been in such peril or has the possibility of totalitarianism been as real. Our way of life is over. Our profligate consumption is finished. Our empire is imploding. Our children will never have the standard of living we had. And poverty and despair will sweep across the landscape like a plague. This is the bleak future. There is nothing President Obama can do to stop it. It has been decades in the making. It cannot be undone with a trillion or two trillion dollars in bailout money. Our empire is dying. Our economy has collapsed.
